I'm thinking it may be more of a decision with Butler athletics. It seems the home schools are the ones that actually produce the broadcasts, including providing announcers. FloSports just seems to pick up the games to stream.
I know that’s the case, but it’s pretty weak of Butler.

If UConn keeps this big lead, it should be interesting to see who comes out of the bullpen in the late innings of this game for the Huskies. Always like to see the lesser used pitchers get a chance to show something, hopefully something good.

Bottom 4th, a 1-2-3 inning for Gallagher, who is at 57 pitches on the game.

Top 5th, with 1 out, a sac fly for Bushling, 12-1 UConn with a runner (Casey Dana, who had doubled) at 3B. Huber follows with a 2 out 2 run homer, 14-1 UConn.

Safe to say the UConn offense is back, at least for this game. Who knows what will happen tomorrow or next weekend.

Ryan Hyde in to catch in the bottom of the 5th, giving Donlan the rest of the day off. Chris Jones saying Donlan has caught 16 straight games. Gives Hyde probably a couple chances to make some noise at the plate on offense.

Bottom 5th, after a 1 out double and wild pitch, an rbi ground out brings in a run for Butler to make the score 14-2.

.-.
Bottom 6th, Gallagher with a scoreless inning. 6 strikeouts on the day for Gallagher, he is at 85 pitches. 14-2 UConn.

Top 7th, Casey Dana with a 2 out single, his 4th hit of the game. 14-2 UConn going to the bottom of the 7th.

Bottom 7th, a 1 out 3 run homer for Butler. 14-5 UConn. Gallagher coming out, Jimmy Wang coming into the game to pitch. Wang definitely qualifies as a seldom used pitcher this season.

Wang gets 2 fly outs to end the inning. He threw 5 pitches.

Bottom 8th, with runners and 2nd and 3rd, a 1 out sac fly brings in a run for Butler, 14-6 is the score going to the 9th inning.

Good to see Jimmy throwing mostly strikes ⚾️

It's a big change of pace for Wang from his previous seasons at UConn, plus from what I saw of him in summer ball in Norwich last summer. No wild pitches either.

Top 9th, a scoreless inning for the UConn offense.

Garrett Coe coming in to pitch the bottom of the 9th for UConn.

A Jimmy Wang appearance in a win is always nice

Seems like Stephenson might not be a D1 hitter. Sample size is growing.

It's still a pretty small sample size, plus he doesn't get to play on anything resembling a regular basis which doesn't make it any easier for him. Of course, if you want to play for Penders, you need to produce something when you do get a chance to play, however small it is.

At this point I'm interested to see how Zach Stephenson does this year in summer ball, he'll be playing for Bristol in the NECBL.

Penders takes full blame for Simmons getting doubled up…

Did not have a chance to listen to this interview until after today's game. Kevin Ferrer hasn't had an at bat in a month or so, but Coach Penders was liking what he was seeing from him in batting practice. Says that Ferrer hit the tar out of that ball that turned into an error. Combine this with the Simmons slump at the plate, that is why Ferrer gets put in during a key situation. Penders also taking the blame for Simmons being thrown out on the bases among other base running follies.

-> Game Notes
  • The Huskies finish the month of April with a 19-2 record.
  • UConn is 10-1 to begin conference play for the first time since starting 10-1 during the 2011 season.
  • The Huskies are 36-8 on the season, tying the same record the 2010 team had when it set the program record with 48 wins. <-

A bit off topic, I know, but this picture of BYUs home field…wow!

UConn played a weekend series at BYU on a spring break trip out west several years ago. I recall Chris Jones describing the setting during the radio broadcasts of the games.

Hope we play there again. They're a solid program to boot.

Bats need to stay awake. Win today might put us back under 50 in the RPI heading into the series with Creighton that will decide the Big East regular season champ.
