2024 Recruiting: Liam McNeeley, the Second of His Name, 2.0

Home & Home with Texas just got announced. Nice timing with Liam on campus whose family is in TX. Chess, not checkers.

former Quinnipiac guard Rich Kelly has accepted a graduate assistant position with @UConnMBB

Rich is a great kid, and he's very knowledgeable about the game. He will do great things, and I'm excited that he earned this opportunity. Can't wait to see him on the sidelines!

    Saint Mary's Scouting Report

Our press will be effective against this team. If we make them chew up 25-30% of the shot clock getting the ball over half court, their slothy offense gets sped up considerably out of necessity. If I'm Hurley, I smack them with the press at an opportune time and try to blow the game open...

    Stonehill Scouting Report

I graduated Stonehill in '13. We had a team that went to the D2 Final Four in '12. That team would lose to this UConn team by 30. This Stonehill team isn't as good as the '12 team, and they obviously haven't closed the talent gap between D1 and D2 yet. I fully expect this to be a long night for...

    Hurley on four-out, one-in offense

Hurley got us to this point running an offense that isn't his go-to. Excited to see where we get now that he has the pieces to make it work.

    2022 Transfer Offer Thread

I would be thrilled with Tristan Newton. He knows how to manufacture points by getting to the FT line. Calhoun-era Huskies would always make more FTs than the opponent takes. Makes winning easier. I would imagine his 3pt percentage would improve in a better system. Pair him with a high AST/TO...

    Starting Line-up is Broken

Our lack of a legitimate second guard has been our biggest problem all year. Gaffney has proven he's not that guy with his play so far. Unfortunately, it seems we don't have any other options on the bench that Hurley's willing to try. Gaffney had a decent game last night, but he would need to...

    I’ve defended Hurley thus far

You need to have excellent guard play to be a top competitor in college basketball. That is especially true in the Big East. Right now, our lineup of guards is playing no where near good enough to win consistently (at all) against these teams. RJ is doing as much as anyone could expect from him...

We got to make adjustments post-Atlantis…

If I had to choose from the list above, I'd say more minutes for Hawkins. The faster he matures, the higher the ceiling is raised for this team. Biggest fix is learning how to close out close games IMO-- coaches included. Hawkins TO in the Auburn game, Tyrese TO in MSU game (both in crunch...

    Dan Hurley's Offense Year 4

Great defense keeps you in games, even on offensive-off nights. The offense looks much improved, likely because of Sanogo's ability to score inside. We no longer rely on the high ball screens, which was ineffective with the rosters of years past. This roster much more offensively balanced...

    Myles Powell suing Seton Hall

Powell's argument is flawed. He's arguing that the torn meniscus should have ended his senior season. However, he's also arguing that since he played so well his senior season, he was going to get drafted. Without his stellar senior season, Powell likely wouldn't have been drafted anyway. You...

    Anyone feel like bragging?

Senior year (HS) basketball team MVP. At 5'7, my coolest non-award accomplishment was being able to throw down a couple dunks, mostly off alley-oops. Ended up not playing in college, but played in a summer league against a bunch of D1-D3 players, and my team, which had zero college players...

    Florida transfer Noah Locke

Bouk was 100% our most talented offensive player, and IMO the others deferred to him too much. So many possessions resulted in Bouk going 1 on 5 and the rest of our offense watching. It made us super easy to defend, and Bouk's shots were that much more difficult. Not sure whether that was by...

    Recruiting Transfers - March

Richmond, Locke, and Whaley would be a homerun. Would love to see Hurley and Co. pull it off.

    Whaley/Polley/Carlton Watch

If you have the opportunity to bring the (co-) Big East DPOY back, you do it. The only argument against it is the potential detriment to the development of younger players. I'd argue they're going to get better by facing Whaley everyday in practice. Hope he comes back.

    Whaley/Polley/Carlton Watch

The only guy I would like to see back is Whaley. The combination of his rim protection and his pick and roll defense (particularly on hedges) is going to be sorely missed next year if he doesn't come back. Plug and play transfers are the answers to find a general scorer and ringer from 3. I...

    Hurley coaching malpractice

Agreed. Gaff needs more development and game experience. I'm optimistic that he will still become what we think he can be. Cole is an improvement over last year's talent, but currently no where close to the type of UConn point guard we desperately need for this team to really take off.
  23. UCbcm

    Hurley coaching malpractice

General observation: Cole and Gaffney are constantly starting our offensive sets dribbling with their backs to the basket. Good ball handlers face the basket on offense. Cole has no right hand and Gaffney needs confidence.

    HBO's Documentary "The Scheme"

Dawkins's decision to keep the coaches out of the $ scheme destroyed the SDNY's case. The FBI/SDNY needed Dawkins to adopt the coach model in order for them to go after the coaches. When Dawkins said no, the SDNY's case against the coaches fell apart. The SDNY switched gears and targeted Dawkins...

    HBO's Documentary "The Scheme"

Watched it last night. It was very interesting to see how this investigation got its legs and why nothing ever came from it. Dawkins may broken rules and made bad decisions, but the documentary shows that he's very smart. Toward the end, the doc illustrates the fiction of amateurism and its...

The underclassmen are getting better each game

Gaffney's 5 assists to 1 turnover is very impressive from a freshman, especially against a good team in a big game. I'm most impressed by how he handled himself in crunchtime and in OT. He's not flashy, but he's methodical and smart with the ball. The more run he gets, the better he'll be. I'm...

    What a home job

How do you know? He's one of the most inefficient players I've ever seen in crunch time, especially over the last few weeks. He doesn't deserve to play in these spots anymore unless he changes his approach.
  28. UCbcm

    What a home job

He also made a contested layup off of a drive to his left and two technical free throws (all of which, I believe, came after the dribble into the corner you referenced). He bounced back from a bad play to come through for the team in a huge spot. I agree that he's not totally ready, but he shows...

    What a home job

I don't think anyone is arguing that Alterique isn't the best ball handler on the team. The argument is that he can't be trusted at the end of games to take care of the ball because he makes the same mistakes over and over again. How many times do we need to watch him face-plant trying to split...

    1-7 and 6

If you get a chance to watch the game, you’ll get to see Mills light Gilbert up. His end of game antics and refusal to learn and improve is reason to sit him. How many games are we gonna lose late because he can’t take care of the ball or make free throws?

    Talent

The most staggering difference between these freshman and previous years' recruits is their basketball IQ. They understand the game at a much higher level. Pair that with their superior talent, and the potential of this group is off the charts.
