IMO one of the greatest American songwriters ever. Not nearly as well known as many of the other contenders, a real shame. This song has been covered a bunch of times, by a who's who, so that tells you something.


"If I Needed You" is a song written by Townes Van Zandt and performed on his 1972 album The Late Great Townes Van Zandt. It was covered 9 years later by American country music artists Emmylou Harris and Don Williams as a duet, and was released in September 1981 as the first single from Harris' album Cimarron.

This is the "old" country version of THE GREAT PRETENDER. The Platter revisited the favorite and
it is on the CD album I have at home. Check out the PLATTERS version for an entirely different sound =
both are great. Thanks to those posting Patsy Cline!

She was big in the CCC scene in the late 90s, then disappeared. Most of her songs weren't folky, but a few leaned that way.
