Some thoughts on the Xavier game:
  • No Paige = No problem.
  • Without his best player Geno didn’t mess around tonight, slapping on the press from the opening tip, as the Huskies came out swarming, forcing the Musketeers into 10 turnovers in both the 1st & 2nd Qtr and 32 turnovers for the game. :)
  • Every time I watch Sarah play basketball she does something to convince me that she is even better than I thought she was the last time I watched her play. Tonight, in the absence of UConn’s superstar, Sarah was UConn’s superstar.
  • For UConn, the next man up tonight was Azzi who lead the Huskies with 23 pts and played an exceptional all-around game. For those of us hoping that Azzi would become a “difference maker,” tonight Azzi was a difference maker!
  • Ashlynn stepped into a starting role again for the Huskies and it looked like she never missed a beat. It’s not easy for any player to step into the starting lineup seamlessly, but that’s exactly what Ashlynn did today.
  • KK's energy off the bench is like pouring gasoline on a fire. While there is no rush to make this change, at some point I think KK assumes the starting PG role.
  • Allie had her very own 3-pt shooting contest tonight knocking down 5 treys.
  • The Hoyas are up next on the road. GO HUSKIES!!!

-The outcome was never in doubt but wanted to see how they would adjust without Paige.
-The smaller lineup with Sarah at the 5 seems to be Geno’s preferred look at the moment. The full court swarming pressure keeps getting better.
-Has anybody else noticed Jana’s FT looks better?
-Morgan has cooled from 3 and gets some tough foul calls against her but it is obvious why Geno loves having her on the floor.
As soon as Allie figures out what is needed from her defensively, a great career is ahead of her. Her skills offensively are starting to surface.
-Feel bad for Q. She had a great chance to do something tonight.
-UConn played well but Xavier has a lot of work to do to be competitive in the Big East

Ok, it was a tuneup game. Whatever. Some really good things happened.

In 20 minutes, Azzi scored 23 pts on 9-14 shooting and 3-5 from 3. This is the Azzi we’ve been waiting for.
In her 20 mins, Sarah scored 15 points on 7-10 shooting with 7 rebounds.

But the story of the game has to be Jana, who scored 11 on 4-5 shooting and 3-3 FTs, and 3 rebounds a block and a steal. Best of all, she had two driving layups from the elbow — pure Aaliyah ball there.

Oh, yeah, and Allie scored 17 in her 20 minutes on 5-9 shooting from 3.

4 players in double figures Allie is instant offense and just wow. Good all round player. I like what I saw tonite without Paige. We were suppose to win and win by holding them down on D was big

Just an old fashioned UConn beat down against a lesser opponent. And without Paige, no less.

I looked at the schedule. I am happy to report that the team is not going to Cincinnati this year. So no rematch for Xavier. ‍

I am glad to see Allie shoot well. I want Morgan’s finger to recover. Her shooting has been off since her fingers got taped. And I was sorry to see Q foul out. She had an opportunity for a lot of minutes tonight.

The team looked phenomenal! The shots were falling. The passes were on point and sharp! The defense was incredible! Everyone looked well and played solid out there. Heck I ain't even upset with Q getting 5 fouls. She was being aggressive and making the most of her time out there.

Jana-Nice. As she gains her confidence, she is going to be a huge problem on that low post area. She needed a game like this, She played very well against Boston University at the start of the season but having another game like that, just builds a player's confidence and that is what we love to see.

Azzi!! Glad she had a nice game. The drives. The contact. That does so much for her confidence. Well done, Azzi!!

Great job by everyone. Q it will be a learning moment. Allie....OMG!! Well done!

Morgan has another issue with her shooting. In stead of going straight up with her jump shot, she bends over slightly at the waste which causes her shot to come off her hand in a flatter trajectory. Unfortunately, by the time a kid gets to college, it’s really difficult to change their shooting mechanics. But I’m hoping that one of the coaches can work with Morgan to get her to go straight up, because I think she has the potential to be a really good shooter.

CD post-game.

We played really well
Azzi really good game, trying to get back into the flow of things.
Sarah did what Sarah does.

Allie knocking in 3's She's a really good shooter. I know I've said that before. Today we saw that.

We did a really good job of making the extra pass and finding open players.

They were overmatched, obviously, but do you win because of your talent or because you play well? Today we played well.

Azzi - she scored in a lot of diff ways today. Helpful. Helps her confidence.

32 pts off of TO.

We don't work on our pressure as much as we should. Goal is to create a little havoc, we were able to do that.

Sarah St - 4 steals, 5 deflections.

She's got great feet, and hands. Quick hands and feet. No fouling.

Geno said Sarah Sales-esque

I'm hesitant, she does it differently. Better defender than Maya... but looks like Maya. Hope Maya is not listening (as a freshman) No one played as hard as Maya, from the time she arrived as a freshman. More relentless (Nykesha teased about put her on worst player so she can run around. One press conference she said that. Don't tell folks! Lol.)

Next: Georgetown - tough and physical.

This is a tough stretch - 4/5 on road. Get into a routine, no school, travel's been good. Not a lot of love lost between Gtown. Playing in Mystics arena, should be good crowd.

See Paige half court shot?

I was on my way out. Not her first attempt. If first, then get excited. If not, it doesn't count.

Everyone worked up a sweat on a cold Connecticut night and cruised to h huge MOV win. As Geno said after the game, it's the kind of game where you just want to develop good habits. Sort of a glorified practice.Xavier was totally outclassed and didn't look like a D1 team. Did I see a graphic saying they had lost 44 straight BE games? When the camera was on the Xavier coaches they were silent and stoney faced. As a player I'd rather not see my coach in deep depression.

As for our team...nobody on Xavier could keep Azzi and Sarah from scoring at will. Allie made 5 threes and scored 17. Morgan had no points. And I still prefer Morgan on the floor. She tries so hard on defense and offense and is destined to be a starter. But it was nice to see Allie showing off her shooting. Q fouled out in eight minutes against a bad team. How did she manage that? No a good way to get more PT.

This was a "butt whooping" as I expected.

Tonight's defense was brutal. Xavier had no where to go. UConn closed off the passing lanes and defended the rim. The offense was impressive tonight. Good movement, nobody standing around.

Azzi - great game. Azzi needs to continue to drive the lane for the layup or the short pull up jumper. When she does, her 3 point shot is even more deadly. Also great defense on her part.

Sarah - I don't know if there are enough superlatives to describe Sarah. Great defense and rebounding. Her shooting continues to be so consistent. I am still amazed when she drives the lane and defenders try to bump her off stride. It doesn't work.

Jana - one play at a time, one game at a time. The progress is coming. And her defense tonight - no fouls. She's learning.

Ash - her pull jumper around the lane is deadly. Hustle, defense.

KK - not the big scoring night but handles the ball well and excellent defense.

Allie - OMG. She can shoot.

Fun game to watch.

Forgive me for not overly gushing on Allie's night. Takes more than one game against an overmatched team when we are way ahead to mean much. Her rep is as a great shooter, but we have yet to see that, until tongiht. In contests, etc, she has been great. Need to see more... but still, she would be a big extra piece if she can continue to make shots.... I know she's only a freshman. Fingers crossed!

Winning was obviously never in doubt, but they played hard for the entire game and won the right way.

That was the Azzi I have been waiting to see.

She was subbed out midway through the first quarter and I don't think she had scored. I remember her passing up a three pointer from the top of the key. She was only out briefly and when she came back in and the same shot again appeared, she took it and made it. I wonder if someone spoke to her. In any event, she was decidedly more aggressive from the point of her reentry on.

I really enjoyed the small lineups, they were really active and quick. Morgan didn't score but she played well on defense and really seems to get it. Allie has a pure stroke and a quick release, great to see her light it up.

It was also great to see all the younger bench players get a lot of court time.

Xavier did not know what hit them. Uconn won every statistical point except they had one more foul. The Combo of SARAH and JANA put together 11 of 14 shooting,11 rebounds 4 assists, 6 steals and ONE foul. Everyone did their part in the win, with ALLIE scoring scoring 17 points on 5 of 9, with 5 3's. Xavier had 32 turnovers and Uconn had 20 steals. 32 give-a=-ways. The defense was spectacular. 27 points, a season low. GO HUSKIES!!!!!!
