Xavier Post Game Thread

Mullins 3 point shot has been off the last two games but tonight he took the ball to the basket effectively and had 3 rebounds, 3 nice assists and 3 blocks. Good all around. If the law of averages apply he’s got some good 3 point shooting nights coming.
I hope you are right but like I said he is running out of time fast.

How is Gus Johnson not even 60 yet but deteriorating at a rapid pace while Raftery is 82 but still sharp? Gus used to be one of my favorite play by play callers during his CBS era and has a long list of classic calls, but he is unlistenable now and turned into some zany cartoon character.
Better than Donny on the call at least.

IMO, we should run offense through Reed to start each half instead of jacking quick threes. Establish the paint first. He’s stronger, more patient, and his decision-making has really improved lately if the shot isn’t there, he kicks it out and keeps things moving.
Inside out sets the tone and creates better looks.

Good to see Solo shooting well. Ross had great game. Smith did well with extended minutes. Reed with very nice game. I was impressed with Mullins looking to pass more. He also knocked one Xavier on his butt in the backcourt with aggressive pick. Not much to criticize.
Solo shot well?

He got even worse for the Georgetown-Villanova game. Corrected himself 4 times in the first 4 minutes calling the wrong player's name on a shot or basket. It's not like he hasn't called games with both teams this season.

100% - why we can’t not continue to find the dogged athlete that can make special defensive plays. Hurley keeps talking about shooters and offense but it’s this kind of profile that ignites kill shots and energizes a team. It’s teams that can create offense off defense that are often the most dangerous.
Baseline for Ross is 20 min a game. That is truly our only path forward...thankfully that has been made easier with the JStew injury. As you mentioned, the atheticism is what matters here. They all don't have to be...but you need a Castle and an AJax.

Good bounceback game. Nice to see Smith play a good game as we needed him in the first half with Demary with 2 quick fouls. Our bench all played great and nice to see Ross with 3 poster dunks. Now the competition level will go a lot higher with Villlanova(I'm not giving and Ed Cooley coached team any chance LOL!) and St. John's/Seton Hall winner. Let's see what we are really made of this year.

He is impossible to listen to. All shtick. Very little knowledge. Comes off as arrogant imho

You don't have to convince me, been saying this for months.

For some, the slippery slope starts sooner than for others.

If Gus has a sense of humor, he is saying "thank you." With a cackle.

Raff maybe has won the longevity raffle.

Yes. He led the team in scoring and shot 40% from 3

I’m not making this into a thing, but he still seems to be off a lot. His misses are fairly off and I feel like he always looked on even when he missed last year.

Admittedly I am not a huge fan of Ross but damn he is was really good tonight.
When Ross is really active on defense and gets his hands on the ball he plays great. He is a real good athlete. Is he ever going to be a go to or even 2nd or 3rd option? No but if he plays like that he deserves the minutes as a defensive stopper/energy guy.

Good game tonight liked seeing Alex showing some fire out there he knows this is it.

Liked that they made an effort to get the ball inside more nit just passing it in there but dribble penetration drawing the defenders and making the d collapse. Would like to see tarris and reibe be stronger with the ball down there too many straps.

Malachi see what happens when you pass the ball instead of insistently dribbling it. Also kind of funny that malachi had his best game since early in the season, I say that because early in the season was when Silas got into early foul trouble(like tonight) and malachi had to play extended minutes.its like when he knows there is no chance he'll come out he plays much better.

Outside of the sloppy play at the beginning of the second half good game.

I like that they are treating this as a work trip keep up that attitude.

Raftery to a fault tolerated Johnson's zany antics tonight..But man, I've been watching him cover NCAA basketball since he retired from coaching Seton Hall back after the '81 season. He needs a quality play by play guy, but he's a really solid analyst / color guy.

SEND IT IN, BIG FELLA!
A few years back it seemed like Raftery was really slipping, but he is much sharper now. Agree he needs someone better than that other asshat. More Donny also.

I don’t understand how they can call such divergent games from one half to the next. Either let them play, or don’t, but be consistent both halves. That’s not a hard ask
I think part of it is that Xavier came out in the second half with more energy. They were making it easy for us in the first half.

Where was that fire against Marquette? It was his last chance at a BE regular season title. Thought it was a little strange in his pre-game interview to imply that the games ahead are bigger than the Marquette game. Maybe that is true of the NCAA tournament, but is the BE tournament championship bigger than a regular season championship? Not for me its not. Both are equally big.
