Xavier Post Game Thread

Bottom line when Liam went out we hoped someone would step up. Ross, stewart and Abraham have not. As such we are all praying Liam gets back soon. And that might not be enough to get us in the top three in the final conference standings.
Abraham could not step up until he can get off the bench.

Call me crazy in the old days we would defend this team for being undermanned, under talented and perennial underdog. Uconn won two in row, lost great college players and wasn’t able to replace them. The last two years were short stories; this is a longer one. Reminder to Danny, you weren’t the best coach in the league last night and some of your players respond to foul calls like you. I can’t stand these last play last shot scenarios. When you’re open take the shot.

That's what was said about Ross too and he hasn't developed. The thing is college basketball is no longer really a development sport.
It is for your top end guys like a Hawkins or a Solo Ball. AKA guys who you can tell are a year away from being absolute studs. For a guy like Ross who is at least 2 years away from MAYBE being a contributor...it's much better to just use the portal and get an immediate impact player instead.

I thought this was a great game for us. I know people are complaining, but we almost won. Off night from Solo and AK. With Liam we win easily. As usual the refs were against us pretty clearly especially once we got to the second half. A call or two made fairly and we win. I think it was very encouraging to see Aiden emerge. If we can rely on him to play like this the rest of the way, we will be so much more dangerous. Overall a positive outcome in a tough road game with the refs stacked against us per usual. Can’t complain.
There were some positive developments, especially Mahaney, but, sorry, at this point only a victory can qualify as a “great” game.

This mirrored the Memphis game:

We and Xavier shot the same # FGs and made the same. We out rebounded them, out assisted them out blocked them, and other stats were comparable except fouls and free throws. We continue to foul with our bigs reaching in, or their best athlete goes 1:1 on AK who just cannot handle.

There was a nice stretch in the 2nd half with Mahaney and Ball and Diarra driving and getting fouls on Xavier - we kind of gave up on that but it showed that we can get their bigs into foul trouble too.

We can’t expect guys to develop like that. Ross pretty much looks how Samson did last year and it’s taking Samson a year and a half of consistent playing time and starter minutes to look like a valuable, dependable player.

I’m sure all these minutes for both Ross and Stewart will pay benefits next year when they go into the summer now understanding what they need to work on after valuable playing time. If the staff chooses to stick with them.

Comments like college basketball isn’t a developmental sport anymore sucks too man. Because it’s true. And it’s terrible for American basketball that the game has changed to the point where it no longer values investing in players and developing them at this level.

That is not a good thing for the sport. Coaches (in general) would rather prioritize bringing in a Mac player with no future afterwards for short term wins than develop their prized recruits with NBA futures.

Then we’ll wonder why foreigners are taking over the NBA.

Also, more video proof that it was with everybody.

Full Georgetown game from the 2009 team where he pulled AJ Price, Jerome Dyson, and Craig Austrie within the first 3 minutes of the game.

It didn’t matter who you were. Can this board please stop saying the quick hook was only for young players now? We don’t have to make stuff up.

(P.S. our old squads deserve more games that they won on YouTube. It seems like most of the full games are ones they lost lol)

odd hill for you to die on. From Funchess to Ajou Deng, from Klaiber to Akok, from Swain to Ashmeade to Marcus Cox etc etc, Calhoun was known to have a quick hook, and alot of young players fell by the wayside. Maybe they were never gonna be players, or maybe the hook hurt their development. Not sure anyone said he ONLY yanked young players, but rather to alot of players, the quick hook messes with their confidence. Dan Hurley seems to be more willing to let Ross learn on the job. Doubt he wouldve gotten this much with JC. Best of luck with the argument

positives :
Ball got 11 rebounds last night, and scored in other ways than 3 pt shot.
Great game by Mahaney. Maybe he can become the player we hoped.

Negatives:
End of shot clock continues to be a disaster
Stewart and Ross are really struggling and Stewart played about as bad as a player can play. 0 positive stats in 12 minutes and got repeatedly abused on defense.

I think Stewart and Ross have had their chance and blown it, it’s time for Abraham to get a chance.

.-.
Why? So he can get three fouls in two minutes. Abraham isn’t playing for a reason. The staff, who sees him regularly in practice while you have seen him play maybe once, believes he can’t contribute yet. We all wanted Nowell. We saw how that played out last night. Abraham and Nowell are development guys.
As is most of this team this year. So much for Danny’s three peat talk 2 days after we won the title.

lol people (I’m not sure you) for sure try to frame it like he only did it with freshman and not it being a team wide policy to defend Hurley being so impatient with freshman.

Now you’re stretching freshman treatment to young players and using irrelevant examples of players who were not good. Like duh, some guys are not going to make it. But JC’s development history showed that he knew what he was doing. If you weren’t mentally strong enough to get through a quick hook, then you just weren’t that good.

But that’s completely different than just not getting an opportunity to play period because you make a mistake like we’re seeing with Nowell.

Like we’re seeing with Ross and Stewart and even a Samson Johnson, guys need the playing time/experience/responsibility or else they’ll look like freshman when they get out there for the first time.

Probably should’ve been blown out but kept fighting back. Maybe the worst Karaban performance of the year. Has Hurley drawn up a good end of game play this year? Somehow always develops into a Diarra panic play.
We simply lacked shooting options
Ball did get a hurried look and that miss would have been game over except for Diarra ‘s offensive rebound. I got the feeling Hurley did not want a two
With that reprieve Mahaney , or Ball were the only real options unless your playing for OT which I don’t think Hurley wanted . Ross having the ball in his hands was not in the play . Most likely Xavier simply shut down one or two options designed their D to leave Rosd open deep
Now you see without Karaban or McNeeley a coach as good as Miller should be able to defend us .Its not Hurley’s play as much as the players on the floor.

Hurley recruited Mahaney to be our starting point guard. It was a big miss.
Hurley has never said this as far as I’m aware, so I’m not sure where you found the authority to make such a declaration.

I love this team. Playing against the BE script ( UConn is the golden ticket to the tournament for most of these teams ). Playing against the BE style. Playing against the BE refs. We will kick these teams to the side when it matters.

Karaban is going through a poor shooting streak, but comes up with some big defensive moments and his leadership is superb. Offensively he is not there. Solo, is excellent. Always was, even when the same BY'ers who will diss this post, said he was awful early in the year. Stewart has saved our bacon a number of times this year and while lacking in this game, is a great asset. Diara is awsome. Johnson is getting better and better. Reed needs to adjust to the BE whistle. Mahaney is a PLAYER that MUST play. Ross has good moments and his defensive energy makes a difference.

Basically when Liam comes back UConn will destroy these teams. We are final 4 good.

My take on the game is that X can really throw a party. That stadium was rocking.

To all the AK complainers February is just 6 days away.
AM, glad that shamrock MeUndies is working, you are needed.

On a more relevant topic we need a physical big who can walk his man down, giving his defender 3 violent shoulder thrusts and make a layup (like that X mofo Hunter or Swain).

He did and think about it, who else was playing it if he wanted to bring Hassan off bench?

I agree on Whaley but he showed it when he had a couple minutes. He only ended up playing more for Dan because of injuries and he finally got a chance. But he was long and smart, Ross isn’t the same guy don’t see it. He’s too whacked as well, needs loods to calm down. He has no offense and his defense has been rather unimpressive. Time will tell but not a lot right now.
Agree on Ross. I was talking about Stewart.

I think the floor is a first round loss in the tournament and the ceiling is making the elite eight. I’m hoping for the latter but this team seems to lack a knockout punch.

Agree but with a much higher odds for the former. They’ll likely have to beat 3 very good teams to get to the 8, even so much as a 1 seed in round 2.

If the SEC teams are really this good, it doesn't matter what seed we get, UConn will get bounced as soon as it runs into one of them.

The fact that Mahaney was in the starting lineup at the beginning of the season does not mean Hurley recruited him specifically to be the starting point guard. That’s an inference made based on him starting. Hurley has consistently NOT declared starters during recruitment. Someone claimed Hurley did say he recruited Mahaney to be the starting PG but, like I said before, I’m not aware that this is accurate.

I just think Stew isn’t a good fit for this offense. Hes not a catch and shoot guy and for some reason he doesn’t put it on the floor much or seems like he gets actions called for him to do so.

I don’t remember him being aggressive at all yesterday. He seems very talented, just a bad fit here.
And that is just his offense which is much better than his defense.

It is possible he was suppose to be the starting SG until Solo made it almost undeniable that he should start. Thus moving Mahaney to PG.
