Xavier Post Game Thread

This was a bad loss. Name a single positive from this game.
Again the boneyard has a very hard time of differentiating between a bad loss and a disappointing loss. This loss hurts our season in no way whatsoever. It would’ve been nice to have. But Xavier doesn’t lose there. Was Marquette’s loss to us a bad loss? Of course not. It’s the Big East. It happens.

What made you optimistic about tonight’s performance???? Cause I didn’t see a single thing. Offense was abysmal. Defense was abysmal. Bonehead IQ plays…. Awdul coaching. Literally nothing I saw made me optimistic to play a team that almost beat us at home last time.
Fight.....Frankly everything

Gaffney take a bow. Not perfect but his aggressiveness was much needed in the first half. Miffed that Dan Hurley pulled him after the bs fall call on the 3 pt play.

Cole was bad for what we need from him. He looks totally lost in the pick and roll. Sanogo went missing, awful game from him.

Martin needs to open his eyes on layups. Just throwing the ball up at this point.

Whaley is an amazing off ball defender but gets consistently brutalized one on one.

Andre Jackson is a busboy right now - he’s bringing nothing to the table, only taking things away.

We have too many guys with undefined roles and it’s February. Dan Hurley still hasn’t figured his rotations out. That technical was awful - it was the right idea, 15 minutes too late. He needs to rein it in.

Hurley doesn’t know how to coach when his team isn’t clicking. Hopefully he learns. Missed a big chance at a nice road win tonight.

Cole hit back to back 3’s as soon as he came back in after foul trouble. Kept us in it after being on the verge of being blown out.

Saying Xavier is a bad team isn’t true. It was also at Xavier with a good crowd and their backs were a bit up against the wall. That being said, we missed a ton of shots and they won the loose ball/offensive rebound battle big time. Winnable game but not nearly as bad a loss as Creighton was.

It’s not a bad loss to anyone outside of the boneyard. If we’re going to lose our collective minds after every conference loss we are going to become clinically insane in the BE.

I’m glad your optimistic. But most realists would say that was an abysmal performance against a very beatable mediocre team.
They are ranked. Realists understand the state of the program. This is where we are now. Competing against potential tournament teams. Which is a better place than we were just 2 years ago.

The big east is hard
We want to be a beast in this conference we have to win these games. Can’t chalk every lose up to well this is a tough conference. We lost these games in AAC too.

Just think if Jackson’s pass against St. John’s doesn’t go out of bounds with 4 seconds closer to our basket.

huh? You sound confused.
He said good teams win on the road. Literally every team in the country has been guess what, losing on the road. By his declaration there are no good teams. Catch up

Aside from another sub 40% shooting performance, I think the biggest issue was the lineup for a long stretch after Cole had to come out again early in the 2nd half. The only change made was Gaff for Cole. You can't expect to just be able pound it in to Sanogo with a lineup that has Gaff, Whaley, and Jackson against a top 25 team. Xavier was able to just have 3 guys sagging in the paint effectively triple teaming him on every touch and that's if we even had room to get a pass into him to begin with. You have to put the shooters we have out there, inconsistent or not, to give Sanogo space to work.

When are these “winnable” games actually going to become wins instead of aggravating losses?!?! this is getting so damn old already. Year 4 of Hurley. Thought we would have been there already.
If we're going to be a consistent top 15-type team, 4 seeds and better, buzz around the program, we need to be winning this sort of game like 60-70% of the time. Instead it's more like 30-40%, which leaves us in that sort of ho-hum 20-30 range, 6-7 seed

We lose to a top 25 AP team/top 30 kenpom team at their house and people are acting like we lost to Tulane at home.
Just the boneyard boneyardin’

Did we play well?
We played decently. Just not well enough to win on the road. Gaff, Cole, and Martin all had good games. Our offense without Sanogo for long stretches is just not going to be good this year. He has to stay out of foul trouble
