These kids aren't robots. Stuff happens. They pulled it together and won.
I'm very interested to see how our girls play/execute tomorrow against UCF. We didn't expect Memphis to be as competitive as they were. Memphis played UP to their level of competition, while UConn played DOWN to theirs, trailing by 6 at the end of the 1st quarter.
Memphis almost played UConn even for 30 minutes, as UConn led by 2 at the half 35-33. Other teams scout us as we scout them. Memphis did some things that upset their rhythm and flow. Memphis was moderately successful to the point other teams may try to employ some of the schemes and tactics they did.
Last year UCF was not a prolific 3 point shooting team. Hopefully that hasn't changed.
“It’s going to be identical to Memphis” Auriemma said. “They’re a very similar team, plays very similar stuff. And we’re on the road. It’s our fourth game in what, seven days? Hopefully we’ll shoot the ball better and hopefully we’ll play better defense. Hopefully we’ll run better offense. Hopefully we’ll get more production from our bench.”
Dangerfield predicted the UCF matchup would be, as customary, a “dogfight." That’s what life is like for the Huskies in their final year in the AAC, with the target on their back and on the road against one of the conference’s better squads. “They’re going be like that even more because teams understand this is our last year in the conference,” Dangerfield said. “They already want to beat us, so it’s just more fuel to their fire.”
Now, what happens IF UConn plays another carbon copy Memphis game Thursday? Massey has UConn winning 69-53.
Can UConn win by the 13 point margin predicted by Massey, and take control of the game from the tip? Or will they struggle again to keep pace with the Golden Knights (14-1/5-0), who will no doubt play like they have nothing to lose..............which they don't.
Will ONO regain her form of double digit points and rebounds? Will Geno get any production from the 5th starter (whoever starts) spot? Will he get any production from the bench? Will Irwin and Griffin take more shots to help the team whether they go in or not, taking some pressure off the BIG 3?
Can ONO stay on the floor and out of foul trouble? Will she do a better job of guarding the rim? There were too many uncontested layups for Memphis.
Lots of things to look for tomorrow night. It would be refreshing to see not only some individual growth and improvement, but overall team improvement as well.
