Soccer is very much a urban game in the rest of the world. The sign that soccer is catching up to other sports in the USA would be small size soccer pitches in poor urban areas. Much of the success of basketball came from outdoor courts in dense urban areas that couldn't accomodate baseball or football fields. Soccer scales down nicely and can even fit on basketball courts. That would harrness the potential player pool in the USA.
