OT: World Cup 2018

Germany for the Cup had xG of 7 or so and opponents had 3 maybe 4 depending if you give cumulative fractions.

Finished with -2 GD, so 6 goals off expected.

Maybe the xG model is off? Gomez was closest to your 'traditional' German striker/finisher and he isn't someone you'd categorize with the Ronaldos or Kanes of the world

It's talent agnostic I think. More about positioning of player, ball, defenders, and goal based on historical aggregation.

Most of their best chances (at least in this game) came off free headers around 6 yard box.

Ozil wasn't amazing, but he made a couple plays.

The finishing was atrocious. 5 or 6 headers over the bar. Hummels shoulder. Gomez whiff.

Werner golden boot in confederations cup, 0 goals in 3 games here.

Kroos a couple good looks from 18 either right to keeper or over the bar.

I'm hard on him, but I just felt he wasn't bringing it this world cup. He had a great cross that Hummels missed off his shoulder. I felt he was mostly passive.

It was more the energy and pace guys were playing with that was noticeable with different lineups. Ozil is not that kind of guy right now.

Germany just couldn't finished, and outside of the last 1/4-1/3 of the game, couldn't really get much going on offense.

Sloppy.

Infogol (Go to stats, map)

Germany xG in that game was 3 and they scored 0.

Cool graphic*. They had some brutal misses, none worse than the Gomez whiff. That's a goal 99/100.

Hummels had a couple of tough mis-headers, but I find it hard to pick on him because he played a very strong defensive match.

*although the probability of the SKorean scoring the open netter should have been higher haha

No Klose. Killer.

And where the hell was Mueller? That's what he's supposed to do.

A lot of interesting permutations for the afternoon matches. Three different teams with the chance to go through. Serbia must win.

I'm most interested in the permutation where Switzerland does not go through.

There's actually not that many on second look. Serbia has to win, or Brazil/Swiss are through. If Serbia wins, Swiss have to win to go through.

Since I'm being lazy, what is the simplest scenario where Brazil is eliminated?

These 4 days of simultaneous games is so cool and exciting. And to think they’re screwing it up to go to 48 teams in ‘26.

Serbia wins and Brazil loses.

EDIT: i'm an idiot. Serbia Win and Swiss win.

Man, I really want to see Mexico get eliminated after winning their first two. That would have been unbelievable. So close.

Well if Serbia wins a good chance Brazil loses. Also need a Switzerland win and then Brazil is out

I read the schedule wrong. What an idiot. Hahahahhah

gonna edit my post.

The way Mexico is playing heading into the knockout rounds, I see an early exit.

He's supposed to be the goal scorer and was a complete zero. Didn't even set anything up.

That is the one team of the three I'd like to see go through. But I don't care that much. Certainly it seems Brazil has the greater challenge, facing a team that can advance. But it looked that way this morning too, and Germany lost to the team that couldn't advance.

Does anyone ever wonder about communication between referees and players in these matches? What language is that in? Watching Brazil and Serbia, and it's interesting.

I believe English is the common denominator. If you ever watch the coin flip you can lip read “which side”, “your ball”, “okay” etc.

Zero goals between Mueller and gomez. Not how they drew that up.
