WNIT

Rhode Island in one of the more intriguing first-round matchups (not a lot of them, IMHO), when they host Quinnipiac.

First round gets underway today with six games:

Kent State at Youngstown State (5:30p, ESPN3)
Holy Cross at Columbia (7p, ESPN3)
Campbell at Liberty (7p, ESPN3)
Southern Illinois at Purdue (7p, BTN+)
Ball State at Marquette (8p, FloHoops)
Grand Canyon at New Mexico (9p, Mountain West Network)

I was thinking the same thing. Once you have reached the championship game, there is a "been there - done that". The WNIT is great for 3 kinds of teams (I think):
  • the lower level teams that get an opportunity to compete in a post-season tourney they otherwise wouldn't possibly get ever.
  • teams that are rebuilding and need the experience
  • teams that want the exposure, which, to be fair, isn't all that much I think, unless you reach the final, when you are on national TV, at least
You forget that many teams had many canceled games, and some teams might be able to use extra games to work on development. Especially younger teams with few vets.

Despite it being Hump day... the beloved Camels of Campbell go down in defeat to the Flames of Liberty... 50-44.:( The Camels season ends with a record of 23-8. Roll Humps!!!

not my penguins. I'm so sad.

The bulk of the first round games will be played today:

Houston at Louisiana Tech (7p, CUSA)
Maine at Boston College (7p, ACCNX)
Akron at Wake Forest (7p, ACCNX)
Kansas City at Northern Iowa (7p, ESPN3)
Alabama at Troy (7p, ESPN3)
Fairleigh Dickinson at Seton Hall (7p, FloHoops)
Jacksonville State at Tulane (7:30p, ESPN3)
Drake at Missouri (8p, SECN+)
Ohio at South Dakota State (8p, Midco Sports)
Murray State at Vanderbilt (8p, SECN+)
Minnesota at Green Bay (8p, ESPN3)
Tulsa at North Texas (8p, ESPN3)
Tennessee Tech at SMU (8p, live stream)
Air Force at San Francisco (8p, WCC Network)
Idaho State at Wyoming (8:30p, Mountain West Network)
Wofford at Middle Tennessee (9p, CUSA)
San Diego at Cal Baptist (9p, ESPN3)
Long Beach State at Oregon State (10p, live stream)

Listened to the Vandy broadcast. Don't know who the guy was who covered the game. All I know is I felt as if I knew exactly what was happening.

Go Vandy! :)
Vandy was worth watching the last part of the year. I enjoyed several of their games. Came away impressed with them
Cambridge had 24 pts and 5 steals in opening round win. 1200 attendance at Vandy. That beat BC - 503.

Seven games today will complete the first round:

Quinnipiac at Rhode Island (6p, ESPN3)
Stony Brook at VCU (6p, ESPN3)
Bucknell at Fordham (7p, ESPN3)
Old Dominion at Towson (7p, FloHoops)
Houston Baptist at Toledo (7p, ESPN3)
UC Irvine at UCLA (10p, live stream)
Colorado State at Portland (10p, WCC Network)

Some interesting results yesterday.
  • My Coogs rampaged into Ruston Louisiana and defeated the Lady Techsters, 63-52. Houston will next host Tennessee Tech.

  • Drake disposed of Missouri in overtime and will next host conference rival Northern Iowa. Drake won both of their regular season contests.

  • Tulane destroyed Jacksonville State and will host Alabama, who edged out Troy. Tulane won at Alabama in November.

  • Vanderbilt ran away from Murray State in the 2nd half and will next host Liberty.

  • Oregon State trailed for most of the first half but recovered to put away Long Beach State, 70-59. The Beavs will play the winner of Colorado State/Portland.

  • San Diego ended the season of Cal Baptist and, perhaps, the college career of Ane Olaeta.

  • Minnesota won at Green Bay and will next travel to South Dakota State.

  • Wake Forest, a last-minute fill-in for West Virginia, beat Akron and will next travel to Middle Tennessee.

I had my eyes glued to the TV so didn't stream the Oregon St. game. Concerning lack of perimeter scoring for them, but Brown and Mitrovic might have both had the best games of their careers so far. Potential 2nd round matchup against Portland could be interesting.

A bit of an upset from Kingston, RI:

Rhode Island has a poor second half to lose to visiting Quinnipiac, 61-50.

Silver lining for @DefenseBB ? Perhaps this late-season fade makes coach Reiss less likely to be poached?

Thanks for the updates. So many games (high school and college) on, hard to keep track of everything. Greatly appreciate you all for posting scores and little highlights of the WNIT .

Second-round WNIT matchups are set.

I wasn't able to find broadcast info for a number of these games. Not sure if they'll be "dark" or if those teams just haven't posted the info yet.

Oregon State handled Portland rather easily, and next will host New Mexico.

Wyoming edged Tulsa in overtime and will next host UCLA.

Also winning routinely where South Dakota State over Minnesota, and My Houston Cougars over Tennessee Tech.

Just to complete your list, Columbia beat Old Dominion. Columbia will play the winner of BC/Quinnipiac tonight. Every time I type Quinnipiac, I think of Rebecca trying to teach Andy Landers on how to pronounce the name....makes me laugh every time. :)

So, in looking at the Bracket, I have to say I must give kudos to both Scott Rueck and Cori Close as two rather established coaches whose programs are expected to make the NCAAT yet when not included this year, they supported going to the WNIT and are make the most of it. Good for them! Now if only a few other "full of themselves programs" would wake up and do the same to promote WCBB, it would be well received.

I am especially grateful for the WNIT. It is giving the OSU squad's young players some much needed experience as they had another difficult Covid season with all the cancellations. Next season the name Jelena Mitrovic will be spoken frequently. This 6'9" freshman has skills. If Jelena stays injury free and stays another 3 years at OSU, Jelena will be the best center in OSU Program History (even better than Carol Menken).

You mean Duke didn’t want to play? Well, Kara is a busy person. She coached in NBA
