WNBA June 2019 Musings, scores, pictures, etc

Las Vegas easily beat Dallas, 86-68.

Hamby and Wilson with excellent games, 27 and 20 respectively. Jackie Young had 9 points and 8 (!) assists. Sydney Colson is back in force, with 10 points and 4 assists in only 17 minutes of play.

Arike led Dallas with 25 points, but she needed 26 shots (9-26) to get there. No one else on her team took more than 9 shots.

One of Colson’s assists was an unreal over-the-head backwards pass to Hamby for a fast break layup. I’ve never seen a no-look pass that was THAT ‘no-look’ - geez. In a post-game interview she said she could hear Hamby yelling so she knew right where she was. This 7-second video is worth watching!

Colson also had a run of 2 straight back to back 3's early (2Q I think) that
broke open a close game. Nice seeing a player who was on the fringe of the WNBA really make her mark consistently.

That's incredible really. AO took 2 fewer shots than the starting 5 combined. Of course, AO's FG% of 34% was better than the 21% by the 5 starters. Still, an 18-point loss is not surprising.

Washington @ Atlanta on ESPN 1PM today.

I agree. Also, Colson's is another one of those WNBA players who played in the same league as Anna Makurat.

Tiffany Hayes continuing her hot run with Atlanta leading 45-42 half time score. The game has been very entertaining in my opinion.

Did not know Cazorla was a backup on the Atlanta team. She looks so composed. Just like at OU. If she gets her shot going, watch out.

Nicki Collen very high on her according to Lobo.

I just turned the game on to start Q3. 28-7 landslide by the Mystics. Hayes has gone cold.

Chicago is blowing out Connecticut. Big win after Friday's disappointing performance against Indiana and with a tough game against Washington coming up.

Cheyenne Parker making a strong run for Sixth Woman of the Year.

Big South and High Point U legend. My Panthers

Speaking of Indiana, they battled back from an early 16-8 deficit against Seattle to grab a lead at halftime 35-32.

Storm played a few games at a casino in Everett, but most of the rest of their home games will be at Hec Ed on the UW campus, where they are playing today. Homecoming game for Sami Whitcomb, where she played her college ball.

Did Kalani Brown get injured? Box score is showing she hasn't played.

Could just be because Parker is back. Box score says coaches decision. Wiese didn't play either now w/ Beard back, after being a starter most of the season. LA continues to suck w/ Candace back.

Seattle-Indiana has been fairly ugly. Chilly shooting, low scoring, very physical game that the refs are borderline losing control of. Winner in this game might score less than any of the losing teams in any of the other games today. 61-57 Storm w/ 1:30 left.

The last 1:30 is gonna take almost 15 minutes of actual time. Ridiculous. 65-61 Seattle final.

DeShields looks like she did at UT, shooting a lot and making far too many turnovers. Tuck looks like she did at UConn in missing at least three layups. Her game seems to have regressed. I hope she gets more time to play and improves her game.

I went to the game and was also curious - don't have any more info than you do except she warmed up with the team before the game & before the 2nd half, etc. ??

Weird game roster-wise. No Wiese either, as @nwhoopfan pointed out. And Beard started but only played 16 minutes with 0 points. Taurasi had said she would play today (which is why I went), but she didn't. Leilani Mitchell had a rare start for the Mercury, and played 37 minutes. She was great, way beyond her stats, which were great. She played super defense, usually on much bigger players, and IMO was the difference in the game.

Mercury played with energy, for a change. They have a lot of talent, but have seemed disinterested. Whatever the reason, today they played hard. DT was dressed in warmups, and stayed that way, but her nervous energy was amped up to a new level. She was in everyone's face all the time, out on the court in time-outs, jumping, shouting, dancing. I'm convinced she got the team jacked up...

Very chippy and physical between Griner and both of the O-sisters. Chiney will be complaining about the refs (possibly with good reason). And Essence Carson roughed up Marina Mabrey at least 3 times that I saw - all on offense - including putting MM on the floor. No offensive fouls called, so Essence just kept doing it. They finally had to sub out Mabrey as she clearly couldn't guard Essence, especially with the refs swallowing their whistles. A joy to behold.

I think playing with an edge really helped the Mercury, and I think the edge was created by DT. I have no evidence to back this up, but I was sitting 2 rows behind the Mercury bench and I could feel it from there.

I checked in on the Indiana Seattle game for a few minutes. The Storm broadcast analyst Elise Woodward (love to listen to her, btw) described McCowan as raw offensively. A few times she received the ball on the block with her back to the basket and she seemed unable to make one dribble without losing the ball. She'll score her share off of offensive rebounds but she needs a lot of work offensively. Hopefully the Fever have a good post coach.

I don't know what was up with Diamond yesterday, especially in the second half. She seemed out of it.

She had 6 turnovers yesterday after having 9 total in the 1st 8 games. Generally, she's been more in control this year.

Good day to have a bad day, I guess, given that Chicago was crushing Connecticut anyway.

The Sparks are the most talented team in the league and just a mess right now. I don't think Fisher is the coach to get all that talent on the same page but who knows.

The Mercury sure have been an enigma this season. Hopefully Diana coming back will help right the ship. Leilani can be a spark off the bench. Interesting that of the 3 rookies only Cunningham played. Her aggression and physical play is helpful against a team like the Sparks. I wonder what the Mercury think of Brianna Turner's future. Can she someday be a Natasha Howard type player? She has work to do.

I thought Mercedes Russell did a good job battling McCowan for the most part. Those 2 are well acquainted with each other from their college careers.

She did. I've been very impressed with Russell so far this season. She's shown a toughness I never saw at Tennessee. I noticed overall improvement in her game while watching a couple of her Polish team's games earlier in the year.
