WNBA 2026

Hold up, what's the news on Citron?
Yeah, same. Angel to Atlanta is a good fit, though she will need to work on her three point shot but I think her rebounding and defensive prowess will greatly help Atlanta. OTOH, with the historic 27/28 classes, I think Chicago may be the winner in the long run. My guess is that Atlanta is trying to stack the cards to win now and Chicago is following the Mystics blueprint with a full roster reload over the next few draft classes.

This is my take too. Angel and the front office clearly weren't a good match. Getting 2 future first round draft picks from Atlanta in 2 insanely deep drafts could become incredible value.

.-.
I actually think Chicago will benefit from this in the long run. There was definitely some locker room drama for the Sky, and I think they are taking steps to fix it.

I’m not sure Angel is what Atlanta really needed to vault themselves into winning a title, though. She fits what they want to do, but I think they needed more shooting and spacing.

The move makes me think Griner is moving on and they need more front court depth. If they're making moves like this, I highly doubt they're done.

I think it’s bigger than Griner. They are probably fine with her leaving, but I don’t see how Naz Hillmon and even Bri Jones fit into this. I believe Jones is coming off injury, but all of their posts occupy the same spaces. I think a stretch 4 would’ve been my move but they definitely aren’t done.

Considering how Hillmon's shooting range has extended significantly in the last couple years, I don't see that being an issue. Atlanta didn't play her solely in the post last year.

I’m saying I think Hillmon would probably want a larger role after working on her game so much. She could very much be happy coming off the bench again, but she could definitely get a starting role and significant pay day from some of these teams.

If Washington continues its rebuild, there is a chance neither pick will be as good as the ones Chicago will have.

One can look at the front office deciding to trade a player who could be perceived as a locker room malcontent. One can also look at this move as Chicago trading away its biggest star (and biggest name), such that it could be off-putting to top free agents.

Hold up, what's the news on Citron?
Here's an ESPN article on this:

Immediate reactions:

  • The Chicago Sky have certainly made some really, ahem, questionable moves under Jeff P.
  • They should've gotten (a bit) more for Angel, but I get it. Cardoso and Angel were increasingly fitting into the same areas all the time. Sky made a decision who to go with.
  • Yes, I think Brittany is moving on. Is Naz H. now a small(er) forward with Reese going inside? How will this affect the outside-in attack of the Coach?
-As for Chicago, Maddy Westbeld will get a shot at that forward time, unless Chicago lures another forward. MW had some good minutes when Reese didn't play the last few games.

Man....all this. And the portal, too.

Jamila Wideman Out as Mystics GM....on the first day of Free Agency and a week before the draft?

Michael Winger, her boss, said they had strategic differences on how to go forward. Hold it, wasn't Wideman the engineered the trades of existing players to get Sonia Citron, Jacy Sheldon and a first-round draft choice from Seattle?

And isn't Winger the guy who has overseen the demise of the Washington Wizards?

So, he thinks so highly of administrative insight that he thinks the coach can do double duty on free agency which was, ahem, Wideman's baliwick.

The Mystics looked like one of those teams you could root for, with Citron, Iriafen, Amoore and more coming into the fold.
Now, I'm not so sure the folks driving the boat are up to the task of serving some really good hoopsters.

One thing for sure is Atlanta will move ahead of the pack in the all important me bounds race.

I am not here to defend Chicago GM at all, but with so much of the league up for free agency in literal days, I think all teams have a sense of who they can keep and who they will lose, which means the actual roster construction could look A LOT different in a week.

Chicago is known for having some of the worst facilities in the league. Until that changes, they will be a tough sell for most players. THAT BEING SAID, I could see Arike making the move to Chicago for a few reasons--they need offense, she can start fresh after a rough season in Dallas, and she's from Milwaukee, which is VERY close to Chicago.

And was Wigner the one who committed to the 4200 seat arena? A couple years before they moved they were averaging around 11,000/game at an arena that’s easier to get to.

Happy Core Day (as in Tuesday)!
HerHoopStats' Richard Cohen breaks down What It Means and What to Expect from Every Team
Overall gist: There are quite a few teams (Washington, Connecticut) that might not use the Core Designation at all. However, a lot of them will and he explains why. Most, but not all, will be kept, while some will be cored at a slightly lower price so they can be moved/traded more easily. He expects Toronto and Portland to core and keep Mabrey and Carleton, respectively.

Read early!

CareFirst Arena, formerly known as the Entertainment and Sports Arena, is home to the Washington Mystics and the NBA G League's Capital City Go-Go.
In 2025, the team moved four games to venues in Fairfax, VA (EagleBank Arena) and Baltimore, MD (CFG Bank Arena). The larger downtown Capital One Arena was ongoing renovations in 2025, so no games were played there.
I am not sure how long the Mystics' lease is, nor am I sure how many 2026 game will be moved to larger venues.

Well, Coach -- err, Director of Basketball Operations Johnson -- won't have to worry about the core designation much this year, since the Mystics probably won't invest in any of those who qualify. However, he will have to decide about RFA Shakira Austin.
Then, there's the three first-round draft choices that the Mystics have.
