The computers need a certain amount of game to make sense. With so many schools playing baseball, the early season numbers are pretty random.
Take a look at the joke of a schedule #2, 13-0 Wake Forest has played. And we won their Regional last year.

Was in bed before game started, very disappointed in hoop team getting beat to Marquette. Always hate losing on a Friday night. Puts us behind the 8 ball for the weekend. Hopefully we turn it around this evening.

Would like to Thank dbmill and HCCforever for updates. Was first thing I looked for this morning.

Go Huskies!!!

Very important comeback victory last night. Losing first 2 games would have been a tough pill to swallow. We had 7 players with multiple hit games, 4 of them getting 3 hits. Really believe our hitting will be fine this season, but am worried about our pitching. We do have many options, so hoping that we can come up with guys that will come through the rest of the year.

A BIG shout out to @Bomber36. Not sure how you did it, but thanks for your updates.

Go Huskies!!!

We win 18-10 in a slug-fest. As much as I like us scoring runs and winning, we need our pitchers to do a better job. The first thing we need to do is throw strikes. The walks are really hurting us. Hoping with the abundance of options, we work this out.

We are 5-1 in our last 6 games. In those 6 games we are averaging scoring 9 runs a game and giving up 5.5 runs. Would like to see the 5.5 runs go down a bit.

Even though it is early, I agree with Huskymedic that it is fun to see us at 15. Another interesting stat is that the Big East is currently 8th, while the AAC is 11th in conference RPI. I may be wrong but if I remember correctly, that is pretty much the opposite ranking from last year. I believe we were 11th, and AAC 7 or 8th.

Lets win the series tonight and get us to all GREEN below.

Go Huskies!!!

Random Thoughts

(1) Hate losing on Friday night, but if guaranteed we win the next 3 I would take it. Good job Huskies

(2) Stated in last post, that our average score over previous 6 games was 9 -5.5. Liked the 9, but hoping the 5.5 would go down. Ask and you shall receive. We score 9, but only give up 2. Love it

(3) Padilla was 7 for13, and our Catchers 6 for 12 in last 3 games. Nice for them to get going.

(4) Broadhurst continues to excel. Going 6 for 15 with 8 RBI over the series.

(5) Daniels 2 for 4 and some nice defense yesterday. Bodes well for our depth for rest of year.

(6) Even though still early we move up to 11 in RPI. Also Big East still at 8, while AAC stays at 11 as a conference.

(7) We are all GREEN in chart below. Also took in consideration the postponed game vs Cal in chart.
Turns out the trip to Hawaii was a success. Lets keep the momentum going vs San Diego State.

Go Huskies !!!

Funny part of the "way too early" RPI is that 3 of the top 4 teams are on UConn's northern schedule. BC, Northeaastern and Columbia are 1, 3, and 4, respectively. Even Rutgers with a 7-7 start is at 27 in the RPI beacuse they have a tough strength of schedule.

Much like certain leagues in BB, I think the Ivies have figured out the way to game the RPI in baseball.
Seems like there are always Ivy league schools with near .500 records that end up in the upper third of RPI throughout the season

It's interesting looking at the RPI's of the Big East teams this season. This year it looks like there are 2 very bad teams in the Big East, both Butler and Villanova are currently on 10 game losing streaks, and have RPI's well over 200+. The rest of the conference doesn't look all that bad at this point in the season, there are 4 teams (including UConn) that currently have RPI's under 100.

Nice win last evening to start the weekend. Cooke probably pitched his best game of the year, and both Kirby and Abbadessa did great jobs. The staff had 10 strikeouts and only 2 walks. Love seeing the walks decrease.

I know its still early, but we are now 9th in RPI. Also some of the teams we are scheduled to play, have great RPI. BC is #1, Columbia is #3, Northeastern #4 and Rutgers is currently at 34. Playing well vs those teams will be a big bonus to our RPI.

Lets get another win tonight.

It's still pretty early in the season, so I am still expecting some pretty good fluctuations in the RPI rankings. Still, it is impressive to see those northeast teams that UConn will be playing to be doing so well in the RPI at this point. It will be interesting to see how BC does in the ACC this season, given how well they have done so far.

Nice victory after a tough loss on Friday. Our starting pitching has really stepped up recently, hope that continues. Also in general our relievers have been fine, just a couple of hiccups. I always felt we would be able to hit. If our pitching continues to perform, we will be in for a very successful season. Winning series today would be a great way to kick off an important stretch of games. After Umass (151), we have 3 vs Rutgers (30) and a big midweek game vs BC (7).

We reached our National goal of winning 11 games. Lets not stop there, and get our 12th today. We are all in Green below.

We finished our "National" schedule with a 12-5 record. Exceeding the very unscientific goal below of 11-6. We are also currently ranked 23rd in latest poll, and have an RPI of 26. I believe a successful way to start the season. But obviously we need to keep our foot on the gas.

As stated in last post, we have an important (and difficult) 5 game stretch. We play UMass (166 in RPI) on Wednesday in what I consider a big game. Not that a win helps us much, but a loss does hurt a lot. Then 3 games vs Rutgers (17th) and a mid week vs BC (7). Would settle for 3-2 in that stretch , but really looking to win at least 4. All games are at Elliot.

Should be a fun week to follow UConn sports, with also rooting on the Men and Women's basketball teams.

Go Huskies !!!

Having a series of teams on the "northern schedule" that do not have a negative impact on RPI and in some cases can have a positive impact is a great aspect to UConn 2023 schedule. BC won 4 of 6 on the road against 2 ranked teams (Va Tech and Fl St.) and have #24 NC St. at home on the weekend before and a tough Ga Tech the weekend after the 1st UConn game on March 28. It will certainly be a battle of the mid-week rotation. Rutgers is sticking around in the RPI despite a 10-8 record as they have a #17 SOS. Got swept by UNC Greensboro, but have won 7 of 8 on a Georgia swing (Ga Southern, Kennesaw, and Mercer). They have Rider and Lafayette as midweek games before the UConn series so they will be loaded and ready for battle this weekend.

The 2nd BC game and Northeastern game are back to back later in the year (April 18 and 19). Tough stretch for UConn w/ Xavier the weekend before and G'town the weekend after. 8 games in 10 days is a stresser for the staff, but that is college baseball.

Not sure how good Fitt is at math. Yes, this isn’t college hoops in that you have a lot of crappy midweek games OOC during conference play, but the Big East teams who don’t win almost all of their games in conference won’t go sliding down the RPI as much as they did last year from playing each other because the OOC showing was stronger. The conference‘s RPI as a whole barely moves from conference games — it’s only OOC games that moves the needle.

Huskies are playing a bunch of weekday home games against some really weak programs. The only bump they will get is with 6 aways late against Creighton and Xavier. I’m glad they are getting whomever to come to Storrs without reciprocity, but it will be murder on the RPI, even if they win 90% of them. Need to win at least 45 to get at-large. They’ll win the conference regardless.

2 games against BC, 3 against Rutgers. Northeastern is a top team (just beat BC), playing Columbia, the top Ivy team. Not much more can be done from an RPI perspective for local mid-week games. Bryant used to be good, but has fallen a bit since Owens went to Rutgers.

We did what we needed to do yesterday, and got a victory over UMass. A couple of posters called the game efficient and stress free, and that's what we are looking for in these mid week games. Garrett Coe pitched well, and we had multiple hit games from Smith, Freeberger and Daniels. Nice to see David Smith get on track, seems like he is following same blueprint as last year. Getting off to a slow start but then really heating up. Dominic Freeberger continues to produce. Also love that Ryan Daniels is contributing, both with his defense and at the plate.

A big series this weekend vs Rutgers and then we get BC at home next Wednesday. An important stretch for us, especially with both teams (as of now) having very good RPI's.

Lets get a Mens hoop victory tonight vs Arkansas, then worry about Rutgers tomorrow. Great time to be a UConn sports fan.

Another clutch, gutty win to sweep the doubleheader. We were out hit 13-5 in the second game, and 31 - 18 overall yesterday. But baseball is a funny game, and you can win games in multiple ways. I find myself thinking every game is huge. Maybe because we have a thin margin for error being in the Big East. We need to pad our resume all year, just in case we don't the win conference tourney. Winning the series is great, but Sunday's game is Huge ( LOL). A sweep over a Big Ten team with a very good RPI, can do nothing but help us at selection time.

Like I stated a few posts ago, it is a great time to be a UConn Husky fan. We have the Women playing at 4 to get into Elite 8, Men at 8:49 for a bid to Final Four and our baseball team tomorrow trying to sweep a weekend series. Let do some winning.

Go Huskies!!!

It’s been a very funny season so far. Both individually and as a team, the numbers and our play this year is nowhere near the level it was last year, and we don’t look like the threat to run deep into June that we were last year. Having said that, we keep winning. This wouldn’t be a great team based on performance metics, but our RPI is great.

That having been said, we need better performances from a substantial number of individuals if we hope to win another regional.

records are almost identical so far. Starting pitching isn't as reliable as last year but there is definitely more depth in the pitching staff this year. Defense is better this year. Offense is more dynamic and athletic this year. Wouldn't surprise me if Sully turns into the Friday guy and Ellisen ends up in the rotation come may.
