I figured the best way to segue from 18" of snow is to post the yearly "Wins Needed" chart. The start of the season is a little over 2 weeks away. When I post this chart it gives me the sense that spring is right around the corner (even though in actuality, spring seems like a long way away). With the combination of some very good veterans returning and many new faces, I'm looking forward to another exciting and successful season. I believe I say this every year, but I want to thank everyone that posts during the off season. You keep me and the board updated on all things UConn baseball. Also a big shout out to everyone that posts in game updates. I'm certain everyone on the board Greatly appreciates it.

My criteria for receiving an At Large bid will be the same as last year. I know it is not perfect, but I believe it gives us a pretty good idea if we are on track for a bid. The criteria is 40 wins, RPI under 50 and a conference RPI of under 10. Over the last 3 years 80 of 82 teams that met this criteria made the NCAA tourney. That is a .976 success rate. I totally understand that this does not guarantee a bid, and that also we can make the tournament without meeting these goals.

I included the following teams in the Northeast line with the New England teams. They are UNC-Wilmington, OLD Dominion, Rutgers and ETSU. Please look over the chart and let me know if you have any questions, or if you find mistakes. Can't wait for the season to start!!!!

Go Huskies !!!!

We are now 2-5 in our last 7 home openers. Which is understandable being a Northeast team.

We got swept last year in our opening series, and 1-5 after the first two series. Hoping we get a victory tonight and get us going on the right track. There is very little room for error once you start 1-5, like we did last year.

Was hoping it would not be a similar start to last year, but here we are. Even turning it on in Big East play did not guarantee them anything last year.

Wow. Incredibly disappointing way to start the season. I’m by nature an optimist, but this is frustrating. Offense hasn’t been good, and our pitching has been terrible. Let’s hope we turn this around quickly or we will only be seeing Red in the chart below.

There are bad starts but the last couple of years we have seem wholly unprepared. The holes we are digging are almost impossible to escape. Need to turn it around fast.
I get trying to play some high RPI teams and challenge your team, but why not mix in a series where you can win some games a little easier? I just don't totally get it. I know the BE does not provide much RPI help, but neither does going 0-8 to open the season (theoretically, not claiming we are going to lose all).

Nice gutty win that we needed so badly. Incredible pitching performance by the staff. Our offense overall needs to start getting our bats on the ball. Let’s gut out another win or two, then hopefully get Tyler back.

Amazing what 2 wins will do for the enthusiasm towards the season. Great pitching performance yesterday, but bats still abysmal. Said this yesterday, but let’s gut out another win today and hopefully our bats start getting hot. Need Tyler back big time. Does anyone know the extent of injury, besides reports he was missing this series?

Biggest worry at this point is whether we’re good enough to compete for a tournament bid. But second, and based on admittedly early results, the national teams we’re playing out of conference are overwhelmingly underperforming and ranked really low in computers at this point. And as we’ve relied on these games for our SOS to be good enough, it’s troublesome. Admittedly it’s way too early to read too much into computer rankings, but something to keep on eye on in the next few weeks.

Anyway, let’s keep getting good pitching and see if we can squeak out another W waiting for Minnick to be back in the lineup and Lane and Rispoli to start hitting like they did last year. If we can at least have a good lineup 1-6, that gets you a chance to win with good pitching (notwithstanding that we’re used to lineups that hit 8 or 9 deep).

Well after our first weekend results, I’m extremely happy to be 3-5 at this point. Pitching performance much improved vs Arizona, and some signs of life in our bats. Definitely much to clean up.

Going to wait at least 2-3 weekends before I start posting RPI rankings. Meaningless to do that now.

Let’s keep it going next weekend and stay safe in the Blizzard!!!

Great pitching performance by to two Charlies (West and Hale). Also love getting a win with 3-4 of our bats out for the game. I hope for their speedy recovery, but this does give others a chance to shine. Maybe in the long run this is a blessing in disguise, just as long they are not extended injuries. Lets get to .500% today.

A great pitching performance wasted. A positive for the season is that it seems like we have a formidable pitching staff. We need to get healthy and find way to manufacture some runs.

Let’s get series win today and start getting healthy.

First sight of Green below. We need a minimum of 2 wins this weekend, but would love to get a sweep. Old Dominion's schedule has not been very difficult, but they are 6-4. Our pitching over the last 8 games has been overall very good, except for a few innings here and there. Hopefully that continues and our bats get going. There was a few signs of life in our bats today. Hoping Tyler gets back soon (has anyone heard anything on his status).

Go Huskies !!!!

PS: I know I have stated this in the past, that there is a great core group of knowledgeable UConn baseball fans that post about our team. I thank all of them for doing so, but a BIG shout-out to DBmill and Huskymedic. You guys are the best!!! Thank you

Great pitching performance from West and Meyers. Lets keep the pitching going, and get our bats to come around. I made a mistake on the chart. I forgot that I included UNC Wilmington and Old Dominion in the Northeast part of chart below. I made changes to reflect that below.

We got a series win, now let’s get a sweep. Pitching again was superb, and bats continued their improvement.

I know it’s early, but the Big East is ranked 21st for conference RPI. I believe there are only 2 teams that are at .500 or better. This makes it even more important that we get every win possible. Let’s keep the momentum going.

It's fine not to give up on the season, but the only way we're making the NCAAs this year is by winning the Big East tournament. Given how weak our SOS is, and our conference RPI, there is no way we're earning an at large bid this year.
Unfortunately can’t argue with anything you said.

Absolutely right, given we didn't make it last year with some of those non conference wins we had. Championship or nothing at this point with nothing left on the schedule to really change anything. The good news is we have the starting pitching and the bats are coming around to give us as good of a shot as anyone to win the BE

.-.
Nice win last night. Hopefully this is the beginning of a long winning streak. As stated above, it’s going to be very difficult to get an At Large Bid. Especially with strength of the Big East being weak this year. But let’s just keep winning and see what happens.

Was hoping for 3 UConn wins yesterday. The hoop and hockey teams won, but unfortunately the baseball team couldn’t finish off the trifecta.

Much needed sweep, that ironically gets us to the same overall record as last year at 12-13. We won 38 games last year and did not get an At Large Bid. I think with our conference and team RPI, we need to get 40-42 wins to possibly get a bid. That means that we need to win around 30 of our next 35 games. A monumental task that seems unrealistic, but you never know. Lets get a win streak going.

If I were Penders, I wouldn’t even be distracted by the at large possibility. We have to worry about winning the Big East and then the Big East tournament. That we can control. (Although the thought of controlling anything around this team’s inconsistency seems to be beyond our control.)

We are currently 12-13 heading to conference play, with a game against Q this week, hoping to get to .500

Last year, heading into conference play we were 10-13.

We also went 1-2 vs Xavier and Creighton. Putting us at 13-17 (we beat Q mixed in there).

We have a successful weekend, we'll be in better shape record wise than last year.

But our SOS is significantly lower and the conference’s SOS is significantly lower which will make moving our RPI up much harder
