Men Wins needed for 2022 NCAA At Large Bid

This week’s D1Baseball projection brings UConn to the Charlottesville Regional as the #2 seed:

CHARLOTTESVILLE
1 Virginia (13)
4 Davidson*
2 Connecticut*
3 East Carolina*

This week’s D1Baseball projection brings UConn to the Knoxville Regional as the #2 seed:

KNOXVILLE
1 Tennessee* (1)
4 Delaware State*
2 Connecticut*
3 Clemson

-> There are 31 automatic bids awarded to conference champions. These 12 are safe bets to be one-bid leagues, regardless of how their conference tournaments shake out. The MAC moves into this category this week, as Ball State’s 11-spot drop in the RPI effectively dashed its already slim hopes for an at-large spot. We’re also moving the Big West into this category, since UC Santa Barbara has the regular-season title all-but sewn up and there is no conference tournament, and no other Big West team is inside the top 100 of the RPI.

Sure-fire one-bid leagues: America East, Big West, Horizon, MAAC, MEAC, Mid-American, Mountain West, Northeast, Patriot, Southland, Summit, SWAC

The following nine conferences are likely to be one-bid leagues, but each has at least one team with at least a shot at an at-large bid, though the poor RPIs of the rest of their conferencemates figure to drag some of them down below at-large range as the season continues. In some of these leagues, there is one sure-fire at-large team that would take an at-large bid if it fails to win its conference tournament, making its conference a two-bid league.

Likely one-bid leagues (potential at-large teams in parentheses):

American Athletic (East Carolina)
Atlantic 10 (Davidson)
Big East (Connecticut)
Big South (Campbell)
Colonial (College of Charleston)
Ivy (Pennsylvania)
Missouri Valley (Dallas Baptist)
Ohio Valley (Belmont, Southeast Missouri)
WAC (Grand Canyon)

Out of this group of teams, Dallas Baptist (No. 8 RPI), East Carolina (No. 29), Connecticut (No. 43) and Grand Canyon (No. 42) look like strong bets for at-large bids. DBU’s RPI makes it a lock, as does ECU’s combination of RPI and regular-season conference title (already clinched). UConn and Grand Canyon have dominated their leagues and also performed well out of conference, earning them some leeway despite bubblish RPIs. <-

This seems to be a pretty reasonable analysis for at large bids, especially UConn's position. UConn should be in fine shape unless they go off and lose the Georgetown series and then has problems in the Big East Tourney. But continuing to win certainly takes care of perceived possible trouble spots.

Its amazing how close we are bunched in the RPI right now. 4 points separating 4 spots. Even this late in the season, a game could move us up or 20 down points while an opponents win or loss could 4 points. Technically, we could get into the 30's tonight with a win and some other help. A 30-something would look so much better. At the end of the day, all we can do is keep winning. Worth noting that a sweep projects us to a 36 RPI.

Have to sweep this series. I still believe there is an outside chance we get to host a regional if we win out.

So we lose our first weekend series of the year. If someone told me we would only lose 1 weekend I would have immediately signed up for it. But was hoping to finish season with another series win. Would not go as far as calling today a must win, but it I think it is a very important game to get our mojo back. Don't want to go into BE tourney on a 3 game losing streak.

This has been a fun team to follow, and I am confident we will turn this around today.

Go Huskies !!!

Totally agree with this assessment.

Obviously we did not end the regular season on a high note. Getting swept by Georgetown and losing 5 of last 8 games. But overall we had a great regular season. We are number #1 seed in BE tourney, been ranked in top 25 for most of the year and tied our regular season record of 43 wins. Also we are all GREEN for our original goals below. But with that said , I am a bit anxious about an At Large bid we we go 0-2 in tourney. Would love to win BE, not only for automatic bid but also to get a bit of momentum into NCAA.

Hoping we get revenge on Georgetown on Thursday, and go on to win BE.

Go Huskies !!!

Need to go 3-0 this week. Hosting is probably not feasible but we at least want to be a 2 seed.

This week’s D1Baseball projection brings UConn to the Knoxville Regional as the #2 seed:

KNOXVILLE
1 Tennessee* (1)
4 Delaware State*
2 Connecticut*
3 Clemson

This week’s D1 Baseball projection (day or so early) brings UConn to the Coral Gables Regional:

CORAL GABLES
1 Miami (5)
4 Florida A&M*
2 Florida
3 Connecticut*

“Connecticut, Campbell, College of Charleston, Davidson, and Belmont would all have chances at at-large bids also, but with RPIs in the 50s or 60s, we don’t love their chances.”

UConn current RPI #49
Xavier current RPI #63
Creighton current RPI #92
Georgetown current RPI #125

This week’s Baseball America projection has UConn as the #2 seed in the Nashville Regional:

Nashville
1. (10) Vanderbilt^
2. Connecticut*
3. UCLA
4. Southern Illinois*

This week’s Baseball America Field of 64 projection also has UConn headed to the Coral Gables Regional as the 3 seed:

Coral Gables, Fla.
1. (5) Miami^
2. Florida
3. Connecticut*
4. Long Island*

->Big East - With an RPI just outside the top 50 and a gaudy 43-13 overall record, Connecticut is the team for bubble teams to root for. The Huskies will be very much on the bubble themselves if they lose twice to get eliminated from the Big East Tournament, but UConn winning the auto bid would take it out of the question. The only other Big East team even in the neighborhood is Xavier, which has worked its way into the top 65 in RPI. <-

Huge, very important win today. Great outing by Peterson and pitching staff. I listened to pre-game show on 97.9 today, when Chris Jones was interviewed. He did make me nervous, in that he thinks we probably need to win tourney to get in. He knows 1000 times more about UConn baseball then I know, but I disagree with him. I really think if we get to championship game we are in. If we end up winning 45 games and do not get in, I believe it to be a travesty.

Lets win the next game and get to championship game.

My GF's nephew pitches for Wake Forest, so I've been following the ACC tournament. NC State (10 seed) is positioned to steal a bid. The bid stealers are what worry me if the Huskies don't win the Big East tourney.

Here's what I say about NC State if it came down to us versus them. They got swept at home 3 games against Northeastern, while we swept Northeastern 2 games.

I believe we lost the second game to Northeastern.

But based on the original post, the focus isn’t a head to head matchup with NC State, it is them diminishing our chance of getting into the tourney through an at large bid.

That said, I listened to the D1baseball podcast today and they were 99% that UConn now needs to win the tourney outright due to last weekend’s sweep, aka their at large hopes have all but disappeared. But let’s say they’re wrong and they are in a decent “bubble” position. In that case, we would rely heavily on every favored team (ie not NC state) to win so that our bid isn’t “stolen” by a league that gets more bids than predicted.

Agreed, but we all know about the NCAA and their bias, bend over Big East for the ACC, no lube

Which seems crazy because they always talk about how the NCAA is trying to make this more a national game and help with exposure up north. I agree with ucjoet that it would be a travesty if we get to at least the Championship game and don't get in. We can only beat who is on the schedule. We can't control how good other teams are. We have been next to perfect winning every series except one which in all intense and purposes was meaningless since we already clinched. They would basically be setting a precedence that when it comes to the Big East, the regular season doesn't matter ever, you can only make it by winning the tourney and that would be a shame.

We have received at large bids in recent years; the difference was SOS regarding its impact on our RPI . For example, in 2021 we were seen as a shoe in for an at large if we didn’t win the tourney (which we did anyway), and the season before that (2019) we got an at large bid. 2021 our four game series against Texas Tech, even though we got swept, really propped up our RPI in the long run. 2019, the Louisville series was huge. You get the idea. Hopefully we have better luck with our SOS next year. In the meantime, let’s win this tourney and make this all moot.
