Why Dan Hurley says UConn’s roster is ‘screaming’ for emergence of Jayden Ross, Jaylin Stewart

People “coming for receipts” over a preseason article hoping Ross provides a jolt is funny.

Some people were talking about him being a major piece last year or 2 years ago. If he’s a viable bench piece giving 10-15 minutes a game and providing D and energy, that’s awesome.

It’s also not exactly chest pumping, receipt collecting worthy. But hey, it’s the Boneyard.

We’re all hoping Ross can provide a jolt. His athleticism would make that possible. So far, in 2 years, the nuances and the mental aspects haven’t shown. It’s wild to criticize fans of a team for not having blind faith in a player to become great when he hasn’t shown it. No ones rooting against the dude.

Well, let’s see , in the first time I watched him play since last year , he shot an air ball 3 and got his ish punched off the glass(granted - goal tending ) but we ll see about him. Jury is still out-waaaayyy out. lol. Wish him the best, hope he steps up but not holding my breath. I don’t think there will be any receipts to collect. Maybe some small ones for a few bucks.

During the post game interview with the media Hurley indicated they would like to give Ross 12-17 minutes and if he could make threes up to 20.

I’m going to sound like HW but if Ross is asked to remain stationary on one or the other wings while the other players are running various plays and ignoring him it’s unlikely he’s going to get over the hump. He’s a kid that by nature defers. This would have been a good game for the staff to give him a green light to shoot threes given that if he missed them he would have looked like the rest of the team.
My heart is warm.

Ross has to take responsibility for his teammates ignoring him though. That’s what happens when you act like you don’t want the ball when you get it. Guys aren’t going to look to pass to you then, because what’s the point?

Hope during these early games the staff pushes him to be aggressive and emphasizes him attacking on drives and shooting. And let him play through mistakes while doing so.

Well he needs to learn to adapt. He's not remotely good enough offensively for us to be running plays on offense for him. If you want to tell me he's our defensive stopper and that's why he's getting minutes I'm skeptical but sure. But every minute he's on the court he's the 5th option on offense and he needs to learn to adapt

Do you still believe that he will play Zero minutes and that Furphy will get more playing time? If not, what changed your mind? Im not the kind of poster who likes to argue and demean other posters so this is not meant as a troll. I'm pretty sure you said he would be last man on bench. Do you still feel this way?

Scarily, I'm on the pro-Ross side of the fence this season as a defensive specialist. It's what this team needs.

It wouldn't be a bad idea to get him more proactively involved offensively in the early season. Love the idea of using him in the Castle/AJx mold when games should be a cakewalk.

Running a few set dunk plays early in the game would be great for his confidence and maybe let him play more freely

What you see is what you get.
Lack of confidence, unsure, uneven, inconsistent talented athlete. Nothing has really changed. Leopards don’t change their spots. Great kid, great potential. Potential=talent without discipline. Prayer, not coaching solves this one. Hopefully our prayers will be answered.

I said him and Furphy would both get 0 minutes and I still feel the same way. I think they're both on the outside looking in when the rotation is cut to 8 come conference play. I just don't see what either of them bring that sets them apart from the top 8 guys

That's not scary.

People aren't anti-Ross or pro-Ross, despite what HuskyWarrior wants everyone to think.

We mostly came at his wild takes, not necessarily Ross.

Also, HW tends to say things in a definitive way then uses interesting argument techniques that rub people the wrong way. So then it becomes a back and forth and it seems like 1 guy is pro-Ross and the other hates him. That's not usually the case. We all want him to succeed, he was a decently rated recruit from a great HS program with serious athletic talent. We don't want him to fail. We just hadn't seen evidence that he'd succeed to the degree necessary.

Its invalid to trash these kids and justify it by saying "I'm not anti Ross because clearly we want all our players to play well" We live and die by this team, and of course everyone wants every player to succeed. harshly judging a kid and then celebrating his successes because it pleases our fandom is not a marker of high character. It's legal, and it's allowed, but its not to be defended.

There have been some things said about Ross and other players that are pretty over the top critical and ill natured. Just because it's the majority consensus doesnt make it acceptable. Im pretty certain that hurley, his wife and the players read the BY. He basically says so in his book. And UConn fans, who live and die by this team, would scuttle away with their tail between their legs if they were ever taken to task for some of their comments.
What has been said? I haven't seen anything said about him personally, everything is about his game and lack of production so far. Everyone is rooting for him, we all want to win and we want all the players to succeed.

Now that you're here, i actually think that you, among the frequent posters, critique these kids in a way that doesnt sound arrogant and demeaning. And of course nobody is trashing his character. That would be silly.
But wanting any player to succeed is due to our investment as fans not some altruistic gesture. I've never met a fan of any team who wants one of their players to crap the bed. It's a self-serving gesture to root for him, not a magnanimous one.
If we can’t discuss the effectiveness of players why are we here? If someone isn’t playing well or makes mistakes is pointing that out trashing a player??? Is pointing out Ross played poorly in the first half ok? Or is that trashing? Can we only talk about his second half?

Plus, people used to always say they are just college kids……but they aren’t anymore. They are paid professionals and I’m surprised there aren’t harsher comments TBH.

I agree with all of that - I don't believe I've ever trashed him or any of our players, that's not my style. I agree with you that it's not great tact.

I do, however, think sometimes guys have opinions on a players' game and it gets read on an internet board like "trashing."

So I'll say for me, I don't think I've trashed a kid like Ross and I mostly saw people picking apart his game vis-a-vis HW611 and his boisterousness. But we agree these are kids and mostly good kids and players who deserve not to be taken down personally.

100% I wasnt referring to you by any means. There is some very good player critique on here: stuff i actually rely on. But I am increasingly more and more convinced, especially after reading Dan Hurley's book, that players-coaches-and wives read the BY. I mean, it's only here and X, in terms of Husky bball chatter (Storrs Central being mostly positive)

You're telling me no BYers are ever ruthless and cruel after a poor performance? I agree with you on all you said. But come on. Hurley even said in his book that Mahaney was effected by some of the things uconn fans said about him on social media.
I don’t post on social except for here so I don’t know what folks said. Considering how poorly Am played I didn’t think this place was overly critical. He was a major disappointment and a big reason our season wasn’t what we expected. Sorry if you think that’s trashing a player.

but if you’re making 500k plus you are a pro and should expect to be treated as such

Honestly, I’m not sure people realize what they’re watching. How close is that game without his defensive effort? He starred in his role, yet we’re nitpicking an airball when the team shot 8-for-34 from deep. He was only 0-for-1! The real story is his defense — exactly what this team was missing last season. Hopefully, that same intensity carries over into the next game.

He looks like he could be a great defender who could provide us much needed versatility defensively and athletically but he was actually probably our worst defender last season.
I think this narrative comes from his analytics score defensively which I’m confused by. I’m working on a film breakdown that highlights his defensive possessions throughout the season currently.

From what I’ve seen so far I don’t know what calculations the analytics did to determine this because it can’t be further from the truth.

Without thinking too much about it it’s hard to believe he’s a worse defender than Solo and Mahaney last year.

Wow, much of this thread was a tough read.

Did I miss something? Aren't we just one game into the season, which doesn't even count as a real game?

Let's give these two a bunch more games to settle in, settle down and time to develop their game, role and confidence.

I believe Ross has a ton of untapped talent. His biggest challenge is to learn to settle his mind, learn to process what's happening on the floor and somehow get things to slow down for him. Some players never learn to do this. I'm hoping that he takes advantage of the PT he gets over the first quarter of the season and develops the mental part of the game.

As for Stewie, he needs to be more decisive and assertive, while playing his role.

Both are talented. Let's give them time to see if they'll figure it out before bailing on them.

Jaylin Stewart locked up Eric Dixon last year and Jayden Ross locked up Ryan Nembhard. They’ve also both been completely chopped up and eaten alive defensively for most of the season

I actually don’t really care about offense. Stewart had a handful of double digit scoring last year. Ross is less strong offensively but has more defensive potential as he’s quicker and more athletic

Play defense, get stops, hit your good looks, and you’ll play. We have Silas Demary, Solo Ball, Braylon Mullins, Alex Karaban, and Tarris Reed on the roster. You don’t need to be a star scorer. Lock up, play scrappy, you’ll get time
