Who We Want to Win (Besides Us, Of Course)

This whole telling people who they should root for and why is ridiculous and pointless. People will root how they want to and each fan has their own reason whether that's logical to you or not. it's sports and fans will be fans.
Not to mention it has no bering on who wins. Insulting someone over rooting interests is tribalism and nothing else.

It makes sense for UConn because outside of the Huskies winning it all another league member winning it all would be by far the best result for UConn.

UConn fans should be rooting for what's good for UConn.
None of UConn’s conference mates have been winning championships while UConn was in the conference since Louisville and Pitino did. And before them it hadn’t been the case since Syracuse in 2003.

UConn has fared just fine. We don’t need St John’s to win a national championship lmfao

90% of Big East fans will jump for joy if or when we lose.

You are still on this huh?

Some closet Johnnie fans here
No, just someone who thinks he knows everything and needs to give his opinion on everything.

If we don't win it all (it was difficult typing that), I don't give a flying f#&$ who does, I will find the remainder of the tournament intolerable.

There are some scenarios that may be a little less intolerable but I prefer looking at silver linings to things.

The Arkansas situation is an interesting dilemma with a potential silver lining. As much as I would not be able to stand the idea of Calipari winning another title, Kentucky's fan base's reaction to that unfolding may end up being the most entertaining thing imaginable.

I wouldn't mind another BE school winning it all but I cringe at the idea of Pitino cutting down the nets (especially if he did so in that ridiculous white suit).

Under many scenarios a B1G school winning it all wouldn't bother me, but I will freely admit that I am quite amused by the quarter century of not quite being good enough, and it would give me a smile or two if it continues.

Basically, it has to be us, nothing else would be a good outcome.

So if his beloved Bengals lost to the hated Browns in the AFC championship game Hurley would root for the Browns in the Super Bowl because they are in the same division. I highly doubt it.

You’ve made this point, and we all get it, we just don’t “get it.” It’s too theoretical of a benefit.

I’m a fan of this years team and this program, and their current biggest rival winning the championship will almost never be something I’d actively root for, you can talk about all the peripheral benefits and conference talk you want.

I don’t die hard with my sports teams and then root for the teams I hate the most. I genuinely want the worst for them and that making the Big East worse, in whatever way, isn’t a big deal to me. If UConn doesn’t its job I don’t care how good the Big East is considered.

people rooting for St John’s to win it all is a literal joke
feels like I've been in bizarro land reading the posts on here the past week about people rooting for them, seems like its a specific UConn fan thing. Duke fans were drinking UNC fans tears last week when they smoked that lead last week, same with Michigan fans when Ohio State lost. Rooting for your current rival and one of your toughest matchups to keep advancing is wild as hell.

1) UConn wins

2) Tournament canceled

Distant 3) Rick Barnes shocks the world

I'm only rooting for St. John's because I think Duke is better and I feel UConn gets reffed better outside of the Big East.

That said, I think Pitino is one of the greatest coaches ever and Scheyer is not in his league, so perhaps I should pull for the more talented team with a worse coach. If Foster and Ngongba are limited still, then definitely pulling for Duke.

St. John's fans are some of the most delusional I have ever seen. Their take on officiating is classic. They know that grabbing and holding will be called against Duke. They are just hoping they let that go at times as well.

I would simply enjoy us beating Duke more than beating St. John's again. I'd like to avenge the BET loss, but I really don't need to see a fourth game wtih them this year.

Beating Duke is always so enjoyable.

I think if UConn and St Johns advance the refs are letting it play out like a Big East game. Duke is more talented and would be a hard game to win, but I'd rather face a team that's unfamiliar with playing UConn on a short turnaround if they beat Mich State. I'd also rather not have to go up against 40 minutes of pressure defense with a pg compromised on a high ankle sprain.

I get not rooting for them to beat Duke if you're scared to face St. John's the following round. I like our chances against them on a neutral court with tournament refs if we make it through Michigan State and St. John's makes it through Duke. I don't understand UConn fans who actively root against certain Big East teams in the tournament no matter what. I hope they'll never whine again about the Big East being weak/bad while they're actively rooting against the success of the league.

St John's fans (the true fans, not those who decided to start following the team because they see a little success) may be the worst on any sport. I know this well as theirs was one of the subforums that I had to monitor many years ago.

If their dedicated fan base was a below average size (for example, maybe 50%-60% of what PC has) they would be dangerous as often it seems that being obnoxious and belligerent is more important to them than following their program.

I know of a case where one fan had restraining orders placed on him by a couple other fans (separate incidents) because he was able to find their addresses (he knew their real names) and a message board disagreement nearly went way too far.

Some of the vile comments made between quite of few of them were beyond comprehension.

I prefer the opposite, who you least want to win. I think I even did that several years ago.

From least want to win, to most.

16. Michigan St
15. Duke
14. Arkansas
13. Alabama
12. Purdue
11. Illinois
10. Michigan
9. Iowa
8. Nebraska
7. Tennessee
6. Iowa St
5. Houston
4. Texas
3. Arizona
2. St. Johns
1. UConn

I'd imagine you have MSU there because we are playing them?

I'd go bottom's up, UConn, StJ, Texas (like Miller), Nebraska, Iowa, Zona, Houston, Bama

Precisely. Ohio State lost, now they’re pulling for Michigan because of the conference? I’d literally never heard of that until this message board. I’m not sure why UConn fans find it a different story.

Of course Ohio State is in the same postion with the Big 10 that UConn is in with the Big East. Lolz

The Big East is not going to be as strong as the power 4 conferences most of the time and we all know why. Why waste yout time complaining about it. Not like that would change anything. If I did though, it would be more like wishing Marquette and Creighton had better years and went dancing, not wishing St John's cut down the nets. Of course others are free to feel differently.

However, the SEC is a different story. I live in TN and they root for anything SEC. It's weird. The restaurant across from my house flies a UT and Bama flag side by side.

But it's the South. They put iced tea in their sugar and ketchup on their pasta.

Making any comparisons to the UConn Big East situation and the Big 10, SEC, Yankees/Red Sox is insanity.

So this would change for you 20 years ago? Or if we got invited to the big 10 tmrw?

It didn’t seem like that was your take, lolzzzzzz

@superjohn talking about rooting against the “success” of the big east, actually just not rooting for your main rival to WIN IT ALL isn’t quite the same thing.

If I told you I wanted no other BE teams to be good and make the tourney, then your argument would make sense. We’re talking about winning national championships and outwardly rooting for your main rival to do what we want UConn to do.

If we missed on Castle and Clingan in recruiting did you hope they both went to Nova?

I want the other teams to be good because it helps in a certain way, of course, but I also don’t want them all winning national titles to prove that our league is good.
