The last time a game was actually played Stanford assumed the mantle. Therefore they are #1.
All of this preseason speculation is just that, speculation.
Until games are played this season, they remain #1.
At least that’s the way I see it.
I share your point of view that last year’s champions should be ranked number 1 to begin the season because they were the last team standing when the horn sounded, and no games have been played yet THIS year to unseat them. Not many here agreed with me.
The idea here is that this is a new season with new players added to those teams. Based on the “perceived“ potential of each of the top 6 elite teams (we know who they are), which team is the elephant in the room to begin the season?
It’s hard to tell which one of the top four is the best at the beginning of the season because they all are going win their first 5-6 games. Except for UConn, most top ranked teams don’t play other top 25 teams to begin the season. Of course top ranked teams are going to win against teams ranked outside of the top 50.
It’s not until they play other top 10 teams that are as talented and deep as they are, can we get a fair and objective look at just how good a team really is. For example, we had to wait until Baylor played the 1 ranked team they played on their preseason schedule because 90% of those teams were cupcakes, teams outside of the top 200.
P5 teams all see enough real competition during conference play. They don’t feel the need to load up their preseason schedule with top 25 programs. As we all know and recognize, UConn is the only top ranked elite team that is not in a P5 conference, so they have to front load their preseason schedule with top 25 teams, because their conference is devoid of teams their equal.
They went undefeated last year in confe play, and are projected to do so again this year. If UConn wants a top seed in the NCAA tournament, they have to beat some top ranked teams somewhere along the way.
