What's the best sporting event/game you ever attended

I was at the 2008 Home Run Derby when Josh Hamilton put on a show at Yankee Stadium. It’s really hard to convey what it was like be there while he went on that tear.

As far as actual games, seeing the Yankees clinch the ALCS in 2009 was pretty special, especially since they ended up winning it all that year.

Maybe some recency bias but the Illinois win at TD was up there. Most iconic run of the best 6 game stretch in UConn history. The place was alive, Larry David legs kicked up.
I'm going to guess you didn't do so well on the SAT. :)

What is the most memorable sports moment/game you attended? I'm talking non UConn, for obvious reasons.

Simply because of their random nature:
the Rodman headbutt game at Brendan Byrne, the Favre dive to give Strahan his record sack and the Namath "I wanna kiss you" Jets game.

But the 1st World Series game at Yankee stadium right after 9/11 was a great game and a memorable atmosphere.
I was at the Joe Namath Suzy Kolber game too

I saw our women win two national championships (2003 and 2014). 2003 was better because I was 10 years old, making it more magical in general. Also, they played Tennessee in the championship game at the height of their rivalry and there was actually some doubt that UConn would win.

Of course the Shabazz buzzer beater vs. Florida was epic.

Also, I’m not really a baseball fan, but the one Red Sox game I ever went to ended with a walk-off homer by Kevin Youkilis at Fenway in extra innings, which was a pretty awesome atmosphere to experience.

Finally, I saw USA basketball in an early stage of the London Olympics in 2012: 5 MVPs on that roster, including Kobe (my favorite) and Lebron. At one point Kobe hit three consecutive three-pointers and the full arena of international fans started a “Kobe” chant. That was a moment to behold.

Non-UConn game I'll go with Super Bowl XXI. Only because of the back story.

We were Giants fans growing up and they were horrid during the 1970s when I was a kid. My father told me and my brother that if the Giants ever went to the Super Bowl we would go. Figured I'd never see it in my lifetime. Then Lawrence Taylor and Bill Parcells came along and they got better in the early 1980s until 1986 when they were the favorites to win the Super Bowl. They beat the Redskins 17-0 in the NFC title game and I immediately called my father and asked, "Are we going to Pasadena?" He said he'd buy the package (tickets, flight, hotel) the next day and call me to let me know.

Game was close in the first half and then the Giants blew out the Broncos in the second half. We all cried because we thought we'd never see it.

St John's 1pt win over Duke @ Cameron, 2000
Winter X Aspen, 2010-16
Lebron/Heat buzzer beater over Indiana @ Eastern Conference Finals, 2013
Notre Dame over Penn State @ Orange Bowl, 2025

Was the game against the Cardinals? I was there too with my 2 young sons and that was hard getting them to the end of the game. Game must have taken 4 hours.

Woop, woop! It’s the sound of the fun police!

Game six (deciding game) of the 96 world series.

Yankees hadn’t won a series since the 70’s and started the series by losing two games to Atlanta at home by a combined score of 16-1.Went to Atlanta and took three including a 1-0 game 5.

The stadium was absolutely electric from the first pitch to Wade Boggs hoping on the police horse on the field during the celebration. As the crowd exited the subway in manhattan after the game, the cars saw, and everyone started honking their horns.

The only time I’ve seen a sports venue as electric was 96 Big East final with Ray Allen and Allen Iverson.

Clemens 20 K’s
David Cone perfect game
John Lester no-hitter

Was fortunate to be able to spend full weeks at The Masters several years in a row, 2005-2012. Superb event. Saw several aces and a double eagle but just a tremendous atmosphere in general.

Well what's the sense of having a thread to discuss something like this if you don't follow the question and directions? Plus I just like to bust RuffRuff’s balls. :)

1. 1987 NBA Finals game 4–Heartbreaking result but the atmosphere was unforgettable.

2. December 11, 1987–Lakers at Celtics. Magic’s hits a quarter court game winner. Another heartbreaking result but the atmosphere was incredible for a regular season game.

3. I don’t remember the date but it was summer of 1988 for rangers at Red Sox. I saw Clemens take on Nolan Ryan.

4.

I was in the bleachers at Yankee Stadium to witness a Dodger win in the 81 WS.
I was at the Tood Pratt HR game vs DBacks in 2000.
I was at the ridiculous Jets-Dolphins game where Marino and O'Brien threw for almost 1000 yards between them.

But none of the above compare to the 2013 Cincy-Pirates wildcard game. So much pent up frustration waiting to explode, and explode it did. Loudest sporting event I've ever attended, and Shea could get pretty loud.

It was hilarious. They brought out the Jets hall of fame guys at halftime. When Pat Leahy and mickey shuler are part of the hall of fame id be drunk too.

There were a bunch of epic Patriots games we went to when we had season tix in the late 2000's through Brady's last SB winning season with them.

But the absolute best was that UConn at Notre Dame road trip we did to South Bend.
That morning, day and night was one of the best days of my life.
And I've had a few...

We went absolutely crazy and bonkers in that early morning tailgate, winning game, post game parking lot festivities and then into the city for even worse debauchery.
So much fun!

Clearly a lot of people (myself included - hence the return ball bust) only read the question from the self-contained thread title and answered without excluding UConn experiences. I don’t think that removes the sense of having the thread.

No mistakes or worries. I am old and love hearing stories from 'friends' who have witnessed sports history in a way I never did. I just felt the UConn best and greatest games would be redundant having been already discussed in thousand different ways here, even in some cases while it was 'going down'.

Just a summer thread to ignite some fond memories and emotions of Yarders. I admire this group's wealth of experience and varied stories.

1978 Red Sox vs Skankees playoff game. Bucky Dent

1986 Kevin Dineen game winner vs Montreal in game 6. Didn’t sit down the entire game.

Clay Bucholtz 2007 no hitter. 15 rows behind home plate. 8th inning guy behind me guy behind me says to his buddy that there was something wrong with the scoreboard because it says Baltimore had no hits.

1958 at Fenway. My first game, at the age of 3. My favorite player , Jackie Jenson strikes out, my mother tells me I cried and cried.

Non UConn? Probably game four of the 1978 Stanley Cup finals (Bruins versus Canadiens). It was an overtime win for the Bruins and absolutely electric. The party spilled over onto the streets after the game, people, high-fiving and hugging, just a blast.
