What is the most memorable sports moment/game you attended? I'm talking non UConn, for obvious reasons.

I've seen one hitters (late 7th inning), Devin Booker scoring 60+, player hit for the cycle and a few others but no Championships, records broken or other historical moments/milestones (and I've been to dozens of pro games). :(

I know someone here has some interesting stories to tell, while I'm still waiting for mine.

Simply because of their random nature:
the Rodman headbutt game at Brendan Byrne, the Favre dive to give Strahan his record sack and the Namath "I wanna kiss you" Jets game.

But the 1st World Series game at Yankee stadium right after 9/11 was a great game and a memorable atmosphere.

I saw a no hitter in person once. But it was at Yankee Stadium and I’m a Sox fan. Horrible day. Two and a half hours of misery plus a sunburn.
I may have been at the same game. The Dave Righetti no hitter on July 4th, 1983. It wasn't fun but the Sox weren't that great at the time and it was a very hot day. Looking back, I am grateful that I was able to see a no hitter even in a loss.

The Pedro victory against Clemons in the 1999 ALDS was a special game to attend as well but not as rare as a no hitter. And the Yanks did go on to win that series.

Other special days also involve the Sox. Watching Yaz in his last two games at Fenway Park in 1983 was special since he was a childhood hero.

Anyone who went to USA/Russia wins. I saw it on tape delay and it was the best event I ever saw on tape delay.
That was the best event I saw on tape delay OR live TV. ;)

Game 1 of the 1998 World Series. We were drinking before UConn Midnight Madness the night before and our Red Sox fan friend tells us he has 4 tickets for us we can pick up in Yonkers if we can get ourselves down there tomorrow so we jump at the opportunity. His mom was the travel agent for Strawberry's wife. We watched the game with the players families. Best baseball team I've ever seen and the place felt like an accordion the way it shook when Knoblauch tied it up with a homer and then Tino hit the grand slam. It was so goshdarn loud and it felt like the concrete underneath our feet might give out.

The friend who got us the tickets is no longer with us and I always think of how he had that connection and he wanted us to enjoy the game as crazy Yankees fans.

Both of mine occurred in 2000

Game 5 of the 2000 Stanley Cup finals. The Devils didn't win the cup until a few nights later but this 1-0 Stars win in 3 OT was the greatest display of goaltending i've ever seen. Devils had a 3-1 series lead and Brodeur and Belfour made all sorts of insane saves for like 6 hours with the cup on the line for NJ.

2000 Florida St at Miami at the old Orange Bowl - Wide Right III - I had some friends that bought seasons tickets just to fly down for this game. This was one of the biggest rivalries in the sport at the time and I was a huge college football fan back then so I did the same and tagged along.

I can only imagine being at that game. I was at Mad Murphy's in Hartford when they announced the score and the place went bonkers.

In terms of best games recently, the 2024 Ivy Championship was incredible. First title game I got to cover in-person and Yale’s Matt Knowling hit the game-winner.

As a kid, my first Giants game was actually in Philly when Strahan won the game in OT with a pick-six against a then-rookie Donovan McNabb. Even though I was 12, my dad’s GF warned me “if the Giants win, don’t make a move and try not to cheer at all.”

I was at that game too. That was the Jeremey shockey coming out game. We ended up with our car blocked in someone's driveway (which was the way you parked at the old orange bowl. Since we couldn't leave we went back to the stadium , which wasn't locked, and had a catch on the field. Dorsey ended up walking out and we had a great chat!

  • Tiki Barber's 200 yard game following Wellington Mara's passing
  • Giants 41-0 playoff thrashing of the Vikings
  • Mets 2015 World Series game 5 loss to Royals with Matt Harvey
  • #2 Marquette - #11 Fordham at MSG in 1971 during Digger Phelps' only year at Fordham
  • Bob Moose no hittter vs. Mets in 1969

I was at the game where Larry Bird and Julius Erving got into their fight. It was really funny. Bird had almost 40 points early in the third quarter and I swear his mouth didn't stop moving the entire game. I'm guessing he wasn't talking about how much respect he had for Julius. I'm sure Julius figured that it was probably in his best interest to get thrown out rather than watch Bird go for a 60-70 point night so why not grab him by the throat?

Georgetown/Princeton - cool game to be at, but would have been better if Princeton won.

Bloody Sock game - great atmosphere at Yankee Stadium. Especially gratifying as a Sox fan.

Dineen’s Game 4 OT winner vs. Montreal in 1986 - Absolutely electric environment.

Whalers 9-4 series clinching win vs. Quebec in 1986.

I saw the Bonds upper deck shot at Yankee stadium.
I was there too. Tim McCarver said that was the hardest hit ball he had ever seen. It crashed into the upper deck before it started it's decent.

I went to the old Yankee stadium maybe 15 times in my life and was lucky to see three of the top 25 Yankee stadium games as ranked by the Daily News when Yankee stadium closed.

I was at Game 7 Yanks / Sox in 2003, the Dwight Gooden no hitter, and the first game in Yankee stadium after the Thurman Munson plane crash. That game was famous for its very emotional 15-minute standing ovation before the game started.

I've been to 7 playoff games in my life and three ended in walk off home runs. I was at the Len Dykstra Mets game in 86. The Benny Agbayani walk off in 2000 and the Boone walk off 2003.

As someone who doesn't really care much about pro sports and has been to relatively few games, I suppose the best I ever attended as fan was a summer 2006 Mets @ Red Sox game where Coco Crisp made this incredible game-saving catch:

Probably the best I ever worked was the 2021 Traveler's Championship where it ended with an 8 hole playoff on Sunday evening:

March 15, 1992 with the Trailblazers vs. Boston. A double OT thriller.

My brother-in-law wanted to leave the game early when the Celtics went down by 6 points with 57 seconds left as other fans began exiting but I convinced him to stay. The Celtics were down by 5 points with less than 15 seconds remaining in regulation.

This game was Larry Bird’s last triple double with 49 points, 14 rebounds and 12 assists. Bird hit a 2-pointer with 7 seconds left in regulation and after the Trailblazers missed 2 free throws Bird hit a leaning, line drive 3-pointer off one foot with 2 seconds left to send the game into the first OT. It felt like the roof would come off the building with the crowd reaction. Goosebumps.

Clyde Drexler was amazing with a near triple double of 41 points, 8 rebounds and 11 assists.

1. Michael Jordan’s 55 point game at MSG vs the Knicks in his third game back after coming out of retirement.
2. The 2012 AFC Championship game when the Patriots defeated the Ravens after Billy Cundiff shanked the kick.
3. UConn’s win over St John’s at MSG in 1994 when Donyell went 20-20 from the line.

I was at the 2008 Home Run Derby when Josh Hamilton put on a show at Yankee Stadium. It’s really hard to convey what it was like be there while he went on that tear.

As far as actual games, seeing the Yankees clinch the ALCS in 2009 was pretty special, especially since they ended up winning it all that year.

Maybe some recency bias but the Illinois win at TD was up there. Most iconic run of the best 6 game stretch in UConn history. The place was alive, Larry David legs kicked up.
I'm going to guess you didn't do so well on the SAT. :)

I was at the Joe Namath Suzy Kolber game too

I saw our women win two national championships (2003 and 2014). 2003 was better because I was 10 years old, making it more magical in general. Also, they played Tennessee in the championship game at the height of their rivalry and there was actually some doubt that UConn would win.

Of course the Shabazz buzzer beater vs. Florida was epic.

Also, I’m not really a baseball fan, but the one Red Sox game I ever went to ended with a walk-off homer by Kevin Youkilis at Fenway in extra innings, which was a pretty awesome atmosphere to experience.

Finally, I saw USA basketball in an early stage of the London Olympics in 2012: 5 MVPs on that roster, including Kobe (my favorite) and Lebron. At one point Kobe hit three consecutive three-pointers and the full arena of international fans started a “Kobe” chant. That was a moment to behold.
