Welp, ACC stays together with a new agreement (LINK)

Coach K keeps beating that drum... Coach K is intrigued by a proposed Big East and ACC merger to create a superconference
""It could also give UConn an opportunity," he said. "They're playing football -- and they'd love to be in a conference where every school plays football. It would be an amazing league with a huge footprint stretching into the Midwest.""
I bit odd to say all schools merge and then say only schools that play football.

It’s amazing how we hate Coach K so much. Yet I have never heard him utter a bad thing about UConn.

I don't recall if this was posted along the way but Ryan Hammer has several posts from August discussing how a Big East - ACC merger could work. If one is so inclined to entertain such scenarios. On the tarheels of UConn Football beating puke, why not now. It would certainly separate itself from the other P4 as a mega athletic conference and completely dominate basketball

Could be viable option. Drop SMU Cal Stanford gives you 26 schools (10 hoops only). If 2 schools left could backfill with Tulane/Memphis.
Plenty of rivalries, strong markets, football parity, and strong basketball especially if some schools return to their previous glory.
Assuming no P2 for us, this has a lot of appeal.

There's no reason for the ACC to merge when they can cherry pick top brands. I don't think conferences can reasonably go beyond 23 schools. ACC can add UConn, Nova, and 2 of St. John's/Georgetown/Creighton without diluting media revenue for the likes of Butler and DePaul. Gets 18 football teams to play 9 conference games. Gets 22 basketball teams where everybody plays a single round robin, 21 game basketball schedule.

Remainder of the Big East could reconstitute as a midwest mid major stealing from the MVC/AAC/A10 (some combo of Creighton*, Saint Louis, Loyola, Dayton, Butler, DePaul, Marquette, Xavier, Drake, Belmont, Murray State, Northern Iowa, Bradley, Wichita St, etc) and an east coast mid major stealing from the A10/CAA/America East (PC, Seton Hall, Georgetown*, VCU, URI, UVM, Davidson, Richmond, St Bonaventure, St Joe's, Charleston)

Well, "Dan on Sports" (who ?) votes for Uconn to the ACC, LOL! (disses BC too...if only it was that easy)

"Dan on Sports" (who ?) used to have a radio show in Connecticut. I seem to remember it was about politics, not sports. Maybe 15-20 years ago.

His suggestion is more involved than just a merger, including promotion and relegation, and there's something to be said for keeping DePaul and Chicago in the mix. It won't happen but it would be interesting

Right but the quote was "they'd love to be in a conference where every school plays football". That wouldn't be the case if they merged the two conferences.
Isn't the logic UConn would love to be in a conference where everyone plays football while there's another whole wing of basketball-onlies? That seems to be what is depicted here.

Possibly? Seems a bit silly to have a conference where some teams don't play each other though.

Happens all the time, especially in football. The Big Ten has 18 programs.
Right but they do all play each other eventually over a period of several years. In any case I think it would be silly to just merge the Big East with the ACC. They should just take the ones with value which in my opinion would be UConn, St. Johns, Georgetown, Marquette, Creighton, Nova and Providence.

How did Providence and Georgetown make the list? The ACC would wish to have teams that would always be in the bottom quarter of the league. Lol

I think there would be at least 2 stages. First, perhaps 2-6 programs leave within a short time period and UConn and some AC programs get the invite to the ACC. Second, more programs leave and the ACC continues to backfill from the AC turnstile. There is no predicting who comes stays lays or prays. We just gotta make sure our toes are still tappin'

This win over Duke in a packed Rent on a gorgeous fall day had to play pretty well for the ACC and media. Much better than a dome or lethargic chestnut hill stadium.

UConn is a fantastic state flagship and I think that is one big advantage that privates like cuse and bcu don't have. If tobacco road still doesn't get it, who knows.
With Stanford, UC and SMU, wouldn’t be surprised if they go after top PAC schools as well.

Georgetown? They are Miami of College Basketball.

If they decided to get serious about basketball, they could be good again.

Past or future PAC schools? I don't think the Corner 4 would leave the Big 12 for an ACC in transition.

I want to see some rumblings and soon. Strike while the iron is hot. Anything from the ACC to get Yormark a little anxious.

Regarding revenue share or lack thereof. We'd have to get something and it would most likely have to be at least what we are making now in the Big East. Even if less, it would still be worth it. A seat at the table is much more valuable than no seat. Having nearby cuse, Pitt, and even little bcu at the Rent would make for huge crowds and an economic boost. Throw in the other bigger name football brands and the Rent would always be full. It would most likely help recruiting for the non-revenue sports too and that is good for business

And the wheel keeps turning. Revolutions. The park is open

Was thinking Oregon, USC, Washington and UCLA…. 😉
