It's kind of crazy to me how poorly BC underperforms given it's market. I think Boston is the best location for a university in the country. Certainly the P4 at least. They should have no problems recruiting based on that fact alone.

And as if that wasn't bad enough, they have the lowest viewership in the league lol. While at the same time they are what, like top 5 in the ACC in metro population? Likely even top 3

I think there are two issues. One BC appears not able to raise significant NIL. Second, Boston is a Pro sports town. Boston area shows little interest in college sports.

There’s some issues that Northeasterners might not understand. Boston isn’t a place that kids from the South dream about going for the most part. It’s a liberal, northern city with bad weather. On top of that, BC no longer does anything in sports, so they have literally no free marketing from prime time or playoff type television exposure. No one watches them.

People can minimize the importance of our basketball in the big picture, but the UConn brand gets tons of free marketing by winning stuff. BC gets nothing. I’m pretty sure they have a lot of legacy students and certainly, many Northeastern students. On top of all that, the football hotbeds aren’t exactly fans of the Catholic Church. They are full of Evangelicals.

I'm not going to kill Cellocgg for saying Boston is a good place to have a college. I wouldn't want to go to college there, but there are many jobs in many fields in the city.

Not that I'd give credit to BC specifically or anything, but if my options to attend a college were Syracuse, Pittsburgh, Morgantown, Clemson, Blacksburg, Winston-Salem, or Boston, there is a pretty obvious winner in the "best location" department

Their lack of interest to the casual college athletics fan is magnified by the fact that they're stuck on the ACC network or streamed when they are televised. Perhaps the most glaringly bad number is actually Cal. Cal has had 7 televised games, including 4 on the major networks and yet they are still averaging under 600k viewers a game. BC with only 5 games streamed or ACC still averages about 500k. Both NC State & Wake have fewer total fans but average more per game.

Perhaps most impressive is Louisville with only 3 televised games, only 1 on a major network being middle of the pack in overall viewers averaging 1.6M per game.

I'm not sure what your intent was but here is my take. Boston is certainly a great place for a university given the number of excellent colleges in the greater Boston area and the entertainment options. It's not a great location for big time college football as has been heretofore discussed. Plus it seems bcu itself doesn't lend itself to the general population having access. The football stadium is an example.

GT and UNC have about 12 million viewers each with 4 games each on ABC or ESPN
VT and UVA have about 6.5 million viewers each with 1 game each on ABC or ESPN

It would seem a good chunk of the difference in viewership numbers would be due to the network. That has gotta be a big problem if part of the revenue sharing formula is based on viewership. The chink in the armor will only worsen over time

Take away the Top 3 and you are as non descript as the Big 12. FSU has big numbers and they aren't even all that.

I agree. My guess he has only lived in New England. For example Atlanta is a great city to live especially for a young professional.

Emory is exceptionally highly regarded and Georgia Tech is better academically than most schools.

That said, BC being within short driving distance of Harvard, MIT, Tufts, Brandeis et al doesn't provide any advantages for their athletic programs, nor does it increase viewership of their games.

I just think you are thinking from a perspective of a student who is top of their class and then Boston with many elite schools makes sense. But Boston is a Pro Sport town which has shown little interest in college football. People I know that went to Midwest schools (OSU, Michigan) and worked in Boston were surprise how most of the bars on Saturday do not even have college football games on.

There are exceptions, of course, but let me hazard a guess that the vast majority of 4 and 5-star recruits in the south aren't even remotely interested in the academic reputations of schools in the Boston metro. Their focus is on a starting role, NIL, frequent media exposure, and an eventual shot at the pros. If they can earn a degree in general studies or can get a teaching credential wherever they matriculate, the ones who don't make the big time will at least have accomplished something.

I loved living in Boston after college and still visit fairly often. It’s an amazing city. However, I’m a Catholic, suburban CT native that grew up 90 minutes away and thought childhood trips there for sporting events, historic sites, museums and aquariums were fun. I was not a Baptist or Southern Methodist 4* football player from rural South Georgia or Roanoke VA. Those kids have a much different perspective.

I chose Boston over NYC at first for several reasons, one being that I liked to ski and wanted to be closer to good mountains in NH and VT. My kids are Florida natives and while they like skiing, only my son ultimately pulls the trigger on going now and then at this point. My daughters pretty much always say they only want to go to our VT house June-October these days. They hate the cold.

They would all skip a religious affiliated school. They were raised Christian with a lackluster effort on our part to get them to church now and then. They did attend day camps etc at church in summer. Those were at a United Methodist church that was very breezy and open minded by Methodist standards. However, while my kids know that my whole side of the family is Catholic, I think they consider being Catholic kind of like being Jewish. It’s different than “Christian” to them. Many times I’ve heard people in the South say things like, “Oh, is Bob a Christian?” “No, I think he’s Catholic.” It’s just such a different world in the South and rural Midwest than New England, NY and NJ.

Good god. If you want to go become and elite robotics engineer or your dream is to go get some elite soft skills Liberal Arts Degree then by all means go to Boston. Nobody disagrees that its a destination for elite Academics. But it's not one for elite athletics, not even remotely.

If you're an elite Volleyball player then maybe you are going to find yourself in Lincoln. If you're the best Women's or Men's Basketball player, you're probably looking at UConn and a few others. You're going somewhere where the sports are the center of gravity socially and culturally. Cal and Stanford are good academically and are P4. They might suck the revenue sports but they churn out Olympic Athletes.

In Boston, college sports except for Hockey are an afterthought and a quirky tradition. Until that changes your assertion will be false false false.

Lacrosse is big in Boston. I think there are plenty of college football fans in Boston, they just have not had a consistent winning team to follow. There were close to 40k at our game with BC and they have sold out other games. If they had a top 20 program they could sell out Gillette
