I tend to think the opposite. They are trying to hide the losses from stakeholders. The parents. "We lost $30M on football" doesn't go over well when they are charging each student $1k a year.
 
It has already come to this...kids and agents negotiating deals

Tennessee signs a high school QB for a deal that had the potential to be worth $10 million over his career.

That QB wanted to renegotiate that deal to $4 million for the 2025 season and went on to skip the spring practice and game..."no one is bigger than the team"...don't let the door hit ya...and now the kid is signed up at UCLA.

Kids with agents demanding money to play college football (and basketball can't be too far behind)...it is now clearly semi pro at some levels...

Could we have a split off...big money semi pro schools with $20-30 Million dollar payrollsversus schools that want to at least maintain the facade of the scholar-athlete ?

Last weekend, I had a conversation with someone on these matters who has some influence in admin and sports at Purdue.

He is entirely certain that IF the whole thing went pro they would still draw the viewership and fans needed to sustain it in the midwest (which by default means also the southwest, southeast and south atlantic).

The only question would be what would happen on the west coast and northeast.

In other words, there's very little holding the schools back from making it a totally pro enterprise.

If they could do it, they would sign the players up to contracts after high school.

At the BCS level, and certainly the top echelon of the BCS, it is fully professionalized. These programs are for all intent and purposes professional sport franchises of their respective universities. The problem, as I see it, is that without guardrails (salary caps being one) the system gets under severe strain and the competitive landscape can quickly get severely tilted to an even greater extent than it already is.

This system has absolutely nothing to do with academics anymore, absolutely nothing. The Ivies made exactly the right decision years ago in avoiding this.
 
I saw a split off coming a few years ago when I kept posting about a P2 break....nothing has dissuaded me that we won't have a top 40-60 programs as a semi pro league.

The first move was the creation of "autonomous conferences"...the NCAA, already weak, was now about ready to be put out to pasture.
 
As CFB approaches being a full-out pro league, and the SEC/B1G seem headed to be the AFC/NFC …. Can salary caps and even luxury taxes be far away?

If the B1G decided to go to an uneven revenue distribution model like the ACC, would the B1G have any more interest in UConn?

Football wise, UConn would likely receive a very low payout, with a higher payout for basketball. If UConn's total payout was only say $25-$30 million, then UConn would not be taking money away from the other B1G schools by having an equal payout. Does that make UConn more valuable to the B1G?

Well, they are not market-based professional teams, in the sense that their finances are subsidized.

So, I would say they are still mostly state-subsidized entities. Let them go fully pro and share the money 50/50 like the NFL does.

No. UConn simply doesn't fit the B1G mold. The ACC and B12 are more realistic aspirations.

Clemson 1 down. Free Shoes fails to lose to lesser version of Alabama, ex-Saban. Such a shame. A few more opportunities for Ls.
 
Some FSU guys took FSU at 2 TD underdogs...I do not gamble because I hate to lose money. The reporting out of practices always incites optimism. And I would be wary because of Bama's athletes.

A one TD game between Clemson and LSU...Clemson was favored by 4.5 (basically two FG's)....I would have lost on Clemson. Memory can fool you as teams change from year to year...
 
Gonna be great in a few weeks when that Bama win doesn’t look that valuable.

Bama was in a decline under Saban and Deboer has just made it worse.

His last few seasons they lost in the national championship game to Georgia and finished #1 in the CFB playoff rankings after blowing out Ohio State the year before to win the national championship. The next season they won the Sugar Bowl and finished the season #5 in the CFB playoff rankings. His final season they lost to Michigan in the Rose Bowl finished the season ranked #4 in the CFB playoff rankings.

His last 4 seasons they went 13-0, 13-2, 11-2, 12-2.

After they won the national championship in 2012 they lost back to back Sugar Bowls finishing 11-2 and 12-2.

You realize that losing two games at Alabama is considered catastrophic right? He did that three years in a row. Two years in a row they struggled against USF. Alabama took a back seat to Georgia. There was a noticeable decline.

And there was a reason he punched out when he did.

You realize they lost 2 games and lost back to back bowl games in the 2013 and 2014 season?

He was 72 years old, it was time to retire.

It probably started earlier than people realize. But the weren’t on an upward trajectory for a while before he left. In this era his way wasn’t going to cut it and he knew it.

It's a little early to a have strong opinion either way. When you have 70 new players with the majority showing up in June, you have no clue what they can do in a liitle over a month of actual practice. So this process happens in games that count. TCU & Clemson are the only teams clearly better than us on the schedule, every other game we can win or lose. Last night was the first time in 24 seasons that the defense held a FBS level opponent to 3 or less points scored

There was a discussion on this board last year about the ACC adding a 9th game and some arguing that this meant they would need to add another team to balance the numbers. I said they wouldn't add a school just for that; that they would figure out another way: either counting ND games or having 1 school play only 8. I was vociferously shouted down.

Well well well, what is the ACC considering?

Games against non-football ACC member Notre Dame (12) could be applied to league standings. ....​
Another option is to simply have rotating schedules in which some members play nine games in a year and others play eight. ​
