10 turnovers and 11 fouls against UCONN. UCONN basically on pace to score 120, but how on earth do they give up almost 40 points in a half to a Division 2 team? I know I keep harping on it, but that's just crazy.

Wouldn't you like to be a fly on the wall in the locker room?

HF is nationally ranked at #9 among Div II. They are well coached.

I bet they don't score more than 20 in the second half unless Geno benches the starters to prove a point.

OK - let's restore some order here. It seems as though folks are expecting this team, in their second exhibition game of the season to play as though it is March.
They are playing in XL for the first time.
They are playing their second game.
HF is a much better team than the previous opponant
Geno could be trying things out.

I think that managing our expectation down a bit and cut these girls some slack is job one. ANd remember this please:

The upside is that this team is going to keep getting better...much, much better

UConn did ease up on the TO's & fouls as the game went on.

Stewie has one of the smoothest strokes I have ever seen on a shooter. She downed a couple from beyond the arc and it seems as we got close to the end of the half, Geno had her moving to the hoop. I love watching this kid.

HF's players are obviously small but they are quick with the ball and screen well on the perimeter. They work the ball like an experienced team. If you're not quick to hedge or switch on the screen it doesn't matter if you're 5 inches taller than they are--they will have a brief opportunity to shoot off of the well-executed screen. Likewise if you hedge and are not quick enough to get back on your [man]. When we have bigs like Stef outside helping, it can be tough for her to recover quickly enough. A couple of times the ball has gone back to her [man] after she helped and an open jumper was taken.

They have taken advantage of good screens and good ball movement to knock down some easy 3's and a few tough ones.

On offense we have been quick to take the open 3, which is a double-edged sword. This is a talented team from behind the arc so we will undoubtedly take a lot of 3's all season long, but we continue to miss opportunities for entry passes. KML had a couple of very nice ones. Otherwise, I notice that UCONN's perimeter players are pretty far out when they rotate the ball--this makes for a poorer passing angle and also gives the defense more time to react. What we haven't seen is very much dribble penetration to a spot, followed by an entry pass. We have seen some dribble penetration with mixed success by MoJeff and Banks.

Some pretty decent outside shooting except for KML who is a bit off.

I get your point but this is a Division 2 team. I don't care how much 'better' they are than the previous team. I'm sure the 2nd half will be much different, but giving up 40 points in a half is what you'd expect Baylor to score, not Holy Family...

Not to mention the 2nd exhibition game which stands in the way of the games that really count, in front of a sparse crowd on a snowy night against an opponent that is highly motivated. UConn looks like a team going through the motions and wanting to get this game out of the way. The players think they don't need this rehearsal since they're ready for opening night and the coaches know better and realize this is not how you get better.

Some of the posts in this thread are why I rarely read game threads. It only took til the 1st half of the 2nd exhibition game for a fan to accuse Geno of being stubborn. And because he insisted on the team playing man to man defense! Some stuff you just can not make up.

Start of the second half.

Dolson fouled and hits both FT; 60-38

third foul on MoJeff - all reach in........she's trying......she'll learn

Jefferson fast break 2. 62-38

EDIT: Stewie fouled and hits both FT, 64-38

Top DII teamsvare often shorter and skinnier than DI behemouths, but there not outrageously less skilled.

Dolson scores through the triple team and gets the foul call. She hits it and UConn is up 67-38

great rebound by Stewie out to MoJeff to Stef in the paint who makes her shot while she gets clobbered - great play!
