Week 5 preview (Dec. 6-12)

Will every game for Oregon be a struggle until they get at least one starting guard back, and probably until all three starters are in the lineup (I'm an optimist about the latter)? Check. Will making 21 turnovers (most of them unforced) and shooting 17-28 from the line make things even harder? Check. But today they did win 68-59 over an unbeaten (7-0) Long Beach State team. So a step in the right direction.

Syracuse blew out Clemson, 86-46.
For a team w/ pretty much a 100% new roster and a first time HC, they've been surprisingly good this year.

Oregon will be better for it. Getting all this PT down the bench is going to pay huge dividends for the Ducks.

Oklahoma is a good looking team. They are fun to watch, similar to DePaul. They come down the court and let it fly, and usually hit. Robertson is one of the most accurate shooters I have ever seen.
Amazing what a coaching change has done there.

I just watched the DePaul vs Kentucky game. DePaul is a very good team. Many of their players are in their 3rd/4th year playing together and it shows.

Cal Baptist cruises past Northern Arizona 89-73.
I thought Cal Baptist really looked good. Brittany Thomas who's in her fifth year was a starter last year but comes off the bench now. She is a beast. I'm wondering why she doesn't start. In 6 or 7 minutes in the first half she came in and absolutely bullied the Lumberjacks. Three for three from the field four rebounds and of course three personal fouls, she was just dominating.

Up and down the lineup Cal Baptist has some extremely talented shooters. Wu was deadly from threeland.

The point guard matchup that I expected never materialized. The Jacks had a great deal of difficulty adjusting their defense to guard the perimeter and as a result of their lack of defensive success were really struggling on the other end of the floor as they consistently were playing too fast.

Schenck had a really mixed performance and as I said she was just playing too fast. She was on triple double watch with eight rebounds seven steals and nine points. However she had five turnovers and did foul out.

Olaeta looked really smooth. They only needed her for 23 minutes but she effortlessly guided their offense.

The Jacks take on Cal Poly Monday night and then the big game Friday against the UArizona Wildcats will be staged in the Walkup Skydome.

Tomorrow a clash between the Sun Devils and Blue Jays.

Get a preview of the Arizona State Sun Devils vs. Creighton Bluejays basketball game.

Arizona State vs. Creighton - Game Preview - December 12, 2021 - ESPN
Looking forward to Jeff Munn on the call.

This will be a great measurement for the Sun Devils to see how well the team has evolved. The return of senior Jayde Van Hefty from knee surgery who is yet to miss from the field in her first two games seems to have been a catalyst for CTT's team.

Since the 10-point lost to Baylor as she is reeled off three straight against weak opponents with the margin of victory increasing in each game from 15 to 24 to 37. ASU has lost their only road game.

The Blue Jays are undefeated at home and could easily be undefeated overall. They lost by five on the road to an undefeated Nebraska squad and lost by three points at Drake.

If the Sun Devils have really discovered a perimeter shooting game this contest could be close. If the last three games against weak opponents however have been an illusion I fear ASU might get run out of the gym.

Thomas missed the first game or two and when she showed up she had her thigh wrapped down to her knee. The bandages are gone and she has got back to last years form in each game.
Best thing for CBU, was that they able to cut down on the minutes played for their starters. Many were playing 30+ minutes and Olaeta was playing 37-38 mpg. They share the ball well, and most can hit the threes too.
The freshman, Trinity San Antonio, will be better as she gets more experience. I have watched her in HS and she was very good as a senior.
NAU are not a bad team, and I think they will do well in Big Sky league play.

I believe UConn will have to be at its best to beat DePaul this season.

Louisville edges Kentucky 64-58. Poorly played game, not impressed with either team.

Kentucky has just never been able to put the rest of the team around Howard.
But this was not a case of her playing great and getting no help. She was maybe the 4th best player on her team today. Louisville deserves credit for defending her well, but she was on the bench when Kentucky turned the momentum early in 4Q, and it was other players (Edwards mainly, also Hunt and Benton) making the plays for Kentucky. Howard has this weird vibe that unless she's going off she looks completely disengaged.

Sometimes your third or fourth best player has to win the game.

But I agree that something about her has seemed not quite connected a lot of the time.

Rough weekend for the PAC 12 against the Big East. Biggest surprise was Oregon State losing to Villanova. Siegrist, who has only played in 3 games for Villanova, scored 28. She's a good player.

Creighton beat Arizona State 69-62.

TCU beats #18 Texas A & M 87-75
Cal Baptist beat TCU, a couple weeks ago, 91-77
Cal Baptist should get at least "1" vote tomorrow.

Uh, didn't Cal Baptist just lose to San Diego State?

I am only asking for "1" vote, not to make the top 25 :D

Besides, someone has to pick up the vote(s) UConn wont get for losing to GA Tech

NC State got 52 bench points today! Looks like they were in cruise control in the 2nd half, beat SMC 101-73.

A couple of noteworthy items from NC State's 101-73 win today against St. Marys:

1) Wes Moore won his 200th game at NC State, becoming the fifth-fastest ACC coach to reach that milestone in his 266th game with the Wolfpack

2) Elissa Cunane, who earlier this week set the school career FT record, became the 18th player in program history to reach 1500 points

3) 11 players played at least 10 minutes of action today...and 9 scored at least 8 points.

The next game for NC State is Thursday, against #21 Georgia. NC State has never beaten Georgia in 8 tries, although these two teams have not met in 18 years.

Oof, St. John's lost to Wagner, undoing some of the good the Big East accomplished today.

.-.
Key word was some.
We already knew St. John's is bad. Finished 8th out of 8 teams in a weak field at the Gulf Coast Showcase. So the loss to a 7-1 Wagner team is hardly a surprise.

The much more notable results are Villanova's win over Oregon State and Creighton's win over Arizona State. Not to mention DePaul's win over Kentucky from earlier in the week.

Helps to keep things in context if we keep in mind which are the most salient data points.

Someone? Okay, how about, I dunno, Georgia Tech?

Mississippi State beats UT Martin 54-37. UTM executes a very deliberate offense and a lot of changing defenses. If I remember correctly UTM played Top 25 teams Louisville and Virginia Tech and held them to 62 and 54 respectively. MSU had terrible offensive execution against the UTM zone in the first half. Mainly the offense consisted off perimeter passing followed by a three attempt. However in the third quarter they executed much better and pulled away.

MSU plays Troy this Saturday. The Troy head coach Chanda Rigby had strong interest in both Ole Miss and MSU during the searches. She has done a great job on her level.

With all the games today, I think I missed Iowa St. vs. Northern Iowa. ISU won, but it was close. Neither of the Joens' really lit it up, looks like Donarski had a good game.
