Week 16 games (Mar. 8–14)

Fourteen different conference tournaments are in action today. Quick rundown:
  • Final: American Athletic Conference
  • Semifinals: Big South, Patriot League
  • Quarterfinals: ASUN, Big Ten, Colonial, C-USA, MAAC, MEAC, SWAC
  • 1st or 2nd round: Atlantic 10, Big 12, Missouri Valley, Southland

A Nail-biter and a heartbreaker in the CUSA quarters... ODU upsets Charlotte (my 49ers) 90-89 in double OT. Trailing 89-87.. Charlotte ties it up with a layup with 6 seconds left. ODU doesn't call a timeout and drives to the hoop and the the ref's call a blocking foul on CLT with 0.6 seconds left. The ODU player hits the first FT... tries to intentionally miss the second but throws up a air-ball. CLT advances the ball on a timeout... but misses a jumper as the buzzer went off. :(:(:(

ODU has won 3 games in three days.. moves on to the semi's vs Rice.

I'm sure that @LETTERL will appreciate this overview of the Southland tournament as much as I did.

Unfortunately, no Nicholls players made the "top 5 players to watch" list :(

Ha! This week, we returned to working full-time in the office for the first time in a year so I'm not as available to keep track of stuff on BY like I have been and have to catch up when I get home.

Stephen F. Austin has been the class of the Southland this year and they have dominated their competition.

I am still hoping for a Nicholls/Stephen F. Austin showdown for the Southland title. Nicholls has NO seniors...they are very young and are a team that will hopefully improve in the next few seasons. They've had some growing pains this season and have struggled to build consistency...so no surprise that no Lady Colonel made the list of players to watch.

I have the utmost confidence Do'bee will get this group headed in the right direction in future seasons.

Speaking of Southland...Central Arkansas advanced to the Southland quarterfinals with a 56-51 win over Houston Baptist.

Nicholls is about to start their game with Abilene Christian.

At halftime, Abilene Christian has a 30-24 lead on Nicholls.

Do'bee must have given an incredible halftime speech. The Lady Colonels came out on fire and have grabbed a 41-35 lead, at the 3Q media timeout.

There's no quit in those Lady Colonels.

Nicholls is going to do it!! 1:00 to go...and the Lady Colonels up 65-57!

Final: Nicholls advances to the quarterfinals, 67-57, over Abilene Christian. The Lady Colonels are now 10-13 on the season. They'll play Sam Houston State on Friday.

The two teams split during the regular season. Nicholls won in Thibodeaux, 89-82, but Sam Houston State prevailed in Huntsville, 72-58.

With the win, Nicholls exploded into the nation's top 250 in the RPI, up now to #247.

A force to be reckoned with.

At the half.... High Point leads Gardner Webb 44-34..... winner advances to Sunday's Championship Game.

I tell ya, you know you're watching a penny ante conference when their conference tournament is decided on a home court.

Unlike the distinguished Southland tournament, played in the majestic Merrell Center of Katy, Texas :)

Bucknell has beaten Lehigh 4 times this year.

Fifth matchup not going so well. Down 34-22 at half.

Winner advances to face Marisa's BU team!

High Point advances to the Big South Conference Championship game with a dominating 75-58 victory over in-state rival Gardner Webb.

In the other Big South Semi.... Campbell leads high powered Longwood 21-12 at the half

Bucknell nearly toast -- now 9 with 80 seconds to go.

Campbell prevails 54-39 over Longwood.. holding the Lancers 31 points under their season average. Sets up the conference final matchup vs the #1 seed HPU. More about that matchup at a later date

Boston is in the Final and will play Lehigh for the AQ, this could be Marisa's first dance as coach. Good luck Boston.

Maryland already had little chance of moving up, but having the conference #2,#4, and likely #3* lose means no chance for style points.

#3 Rutgers trails 39-23 late in 1st half.

Bucknell bid for overall #1 seed falls by the way side, losing 63-54.
A buddy and I were discussing this over a cup of coffee the other day. Not only was NC State battling South Carolina for a possible #1 seed, Bucknell was also looming large in the background.

Want the winner of the Michigan State vs Iowa game to win the tournament, that way ND and maybe Miss State have to go to the WNIT instead of the NCAA.

How that would impact the size of the bubble? Iowa is already a lock, probably a 6 seed at this point, and MSU’s win over Indiana makes them a lock as well IMO.
