Week 16 games (Mar. 8–14)

I gotta stop using the eye test. To me several of these teams are about the same as BYU. Anybody that gets beat by Washington by 29 shouldn't be a bubble team...

Oh boy. As good as Fresno St.-New Mexico was, Boise St.-Wyoming is a stinker. 4-0 Cowboys about 5 minutes in. I think I'm gonna tune out, not worth watching.

I have to ask, who thought brown and yellow is a good color scheme? Black and yellow is classic, brown and yellow...nope.

Wyoming collapsing 3 defenders onto McGwire...somebody must be open? They try to force it into her but it sails out of bounds.

7-4 Wyoming thru Q1. Definitely not watching this mess.

Who knows, but it looks like Fresno St. should wipe the floor with either of these teams.

Jade Loville leads Boise State over the slumping (winless in March) CSU Rams. BSU uses a 13-0 second quarter run to take command and never look back. CSU split with both Fresno State and UNLV and swept BSU in January by 20+ but could not reverse the season ending slump that included a sweep by the wandering Lobos that earned New Mexico the Mountain West title.

The two hottest teams in Mountain West advance , the Lobos winners of 5 straight take on Fresno State in a battle of the twins (identical?). View attachment 65498 The lesser known Duff twins pace NM.
We are all familiar with Haley from Hannah and Haley, Gilbert HS Tigers and the pride of AZ.

Wyoming winner of 4 in a row takes on BSU in the other semi. The Cowgirls were swept by BSU in Jan losing by 6 and 7 points.

Cowgirls leading Boise 18-12. They are 3 of 8 from three land after hitting 15 last night to break the single game tournament record.

Impressive run by Wyoming. Reminder that they lost two of their better players from a season ago to Miami and South Florida.

Loville scored almost as many yesterday (29) as Boise St. did as a team today (38). I watched the first 5 minutes of the game, they definitely would not have hit water falling out of a boat in the middle of the ocean.

The Southland tournament starts today with two games:

#9 McNeese vs. #8 Houston Baptist at Noon. The winner faces #5 Central Arkansas on Thursday.

#10 Incarnate Word vs. #7 Abilene Christian at 2:30 pm. The winner faces #6 Nicholls on Thursday.

Go Wyo lol. In almost all of their losses they were within striking distance. Wyoming plays pretty disciplined, and they almost always have 5 shooters on the court. I'm hoping they can win the MWC. It would be so cool. They have a 6-5 freshman next year from 90 miles down the road from Laramie. Most of the good players from WY leave the state, so its exciting she's staying.

The Mountain West final should be intriguing although a cup of coffee may be required to stay up that late. Fresno State will clearly be the favorite but Wyoming is intriguing.

The two teams split earlier in the year in close games decided by two and three points with the Cowgirls winning the defensive game and the Dogs, unsurprisingly winning the OT shoot out.

In the loss, the Cavinder twins had 40 but Utti scored 3 and the Dogs were outrebounded and gave up 10 threes.

In the OT win, the Dogs were crushed on the boards (21-4 on the offensive glass), gave up 15 threes, trailed 20-9 after 1 but Utti was the deciding factor with 23 points, 5 of 5 from three land, 10 boards, 4 dimes (to lead the team), 2 steals and a block.

@Reypl21 points out the discipline of Wyoming. Their scoring defense has been outstanding over the last 6 weeks and in their last four games they've given up 42 points (21 per cent), 41 points, (31 per cent), 56 points (38 per cent), 38 points (28 per cent).

Fresno State has averaged just over 40 per cent from the field over the last 4 games

Can Coach Gerald Mattinson conjure a Bunky Harkleroad type upset in the Mountain West Championship game and be a Cinderella?

Unlikely, but tonight's game is the most intriguing of the day.

Oregon castoff Sierra Campisano is having a monster game for Cal Poly--14 pts/8 reb at the half. Cal Poly w/ a narrow 26-25 lead over Long Beach St.

Cal Poly and Long Beach St. going down to the wire in a Big West quarter final. I think CP pulled it out at the very end.

edit--looks like a layup at the buzzer; Campisano had 30 pts/12 reb.

Fourteen different conference tournaments are in action today. Quick rundown:
  • Final: American Athletic Conference
  • Semifinals: Big South, Patriot League
  • Quarterfinals: ASUN, Big Ten, Colonial, C-USA, MAAC, MEAC, SWAC
  • 1st or 2nd round: Atlantic 10, Big 12, Missouri Valley, Southland

A Nail-biter and a heartbreaker in the CUSA quarters... ODU upsets Charlotte (my 49ers) 90-89 in double OT. Trailing 89-87.. Charlotte ties it up with a layup with 6 seconds left. ODU doesn't call a timeout and drives to the hoop and the the ref's call a blocking foul on CLT with 0.6 seconds left. The ODU player hits the first FT... tries to intentionally miss the second but throws up a air-ball. CLT advances the ball on a timeout... but misses a jumper as the buzzer went off. :(:(:(

ODU has won 3 games in three days.. moves on to the semi's vs Rice.

I'm sure that @LETTERL will appreciate this overview of the Southland tournament as much as I did.

Unfortunately, no Nicholls players made the "top 5 players to watch" list :(

Ha! This week, we returned to working full-time in the office for the first time in a year so I'm not as available to keep track of stuff on BY like I have been and have to catch up when I get home.

Stephen F. Austin has been the class of the Southland this year and they have dominated their competition.

I am still hoping for a Nicholls/Stephen F. Austin showdown for the Southland title. Nicholls has NO seniors...they are very young and are a team that will hopefully improve in the next few seasons. They've had some growing pains this season and have struggled to build consistency...so no surprise that no Lady Colonel made the list of players to watch.

I have the utmost confidence Do'bee will get this group headed in the right direction in future seasons.

Speaking of Southland...Central Arkansas advanced to the Southland quarterfinals with a 56-51 win over Houston Baptist.

Nicholls is about to start their game with Abilene Christian.

At halftime, Abilene Christian has a 30-24 lead on Nicholls.

Do'bee must have given an incredible halftime speech. The Lady Colonels came out on fire and have grabbed a 41-35 lead, at the 3Q media timeout.

There's no quit in those Lady Colonels.

Nicholls is going to do it!! 1:00 to go...and the Lady Colonels up 65-57!

Final: Nicholls advances to the quarterfinals, 67-57, over Abilene Christian. The Lady Colonels are now 10-13 on the season. They'll play Sam Houston State on Friday.

The two teams split during the regular season. Nicholls won in Thibodeaux, 89-82, but Sam Houston State prevailed in Huntsville, 72-58.

With the win, Nicholls exploded into the nation's top 250 in the RPI, up now to #247.

A force to be reckoned with.
