Week 12 - Jan 22 to 28

I didn't watch the game, have a question for anyone who did. Why did Williams have so many attempted 3s this game? It wasn't like LSU was playing from behind the whole way. She was shooting a very good 44.4% on the season, but 90 attempts in the previous 20 games means she took more than double her usual amount this game. Why? Especially since she wasn't hitting ANY of them?

I guess that I was wrong about Dee Kantner reffing the SoCar at LSU game. According to the box score she worked the Kentucky at Arkansas game.
I also saw that Saylor didn't play. Hmm.

Well I totally had this game wrong. SC won but LSU could have taken it if they hadn’t thrown good sense out the window. I will get right on revisiting a lot of my assumptions about this season.

In one sense this game was really encouraging, to the extent it showed how tight the coaching window is. It doesn’t take much to turn a game around or to blow a winning hand. WCBB is exciting to watch.

CSUB beat CSUN 70-54 in case anyone cares.

UT-Chatt handled UNC-G 70-55 to remain undefeated in the SOCON.

.-.
If they play again, SC by 20.

LSU gave its best shot, outrebounded SC & shutdown Cardozo for a 1/2 plus had energized crowd, and they still couldn’t do it.

Those LSU lapses at the end of q1 and q2 were critical.

Huge confidence boost for SC
South Carolina missed a lot of shots right around the basket that they normally would make. LSU had their chance.

Nah low basketball IQ is.

How does a veteran get those 2 fouls in the 4th? Especially fouling someone from behind on a layup?!?!?

How does a veteran not wait for the last shot at the end of the quarter?

I knew better when I was 12.
Both can be true.

Who does Mulkey have as a back up when Van Lith makes mistakes? Poa showed she wasn't capable when she was in. Williams is still learning. When Morrow had to sit most of the first half, they lost a key rebounder who was helping them big time on the offensive glass. Del Rosario did better than expected, but not having Smith hurts them here. And not having Smith forces Mulkey's hand in having to keep Reese out there when she was in foul trouble.

Reese definitely has to make better decisions with respect to fouling. The fourth foul, I'm mixed on it as both she and Cardoso were tied up pretty good. No excuses on the fifth even though that was caused by Van Lith with another bad entry pass.

Reese had a hand full of jersey on the 4th foul. They probably would’ve went down together anyway but she shouldn’t have grabbed the jersey.

LSU really doesn’t have a backup for Hailey Van Lith. Although they really don’t have a point guard to begin with

With last night's win, a mammoth gap between SC and the rest.

The 0.74 point gap is equivalent to the gap between #2 & #22, and between #22 & #69.

Fairfield continued rolling along thru the MAAC. 8-0 in conference and 16-1 overall. Took down once mighty Quinnipiac by 15.
Ugh, ok first things first, my son went to Fairfield U, I live in Connecticut but take a look at their Massey rating the MAAC conference rating (#26) and the opponents that they built this 16-1 record with.

I really like Poa. She made a difference last year against Iowa, and in my eyes is a solid backup. She just had a bit of a rough game yesterday. Credit to SC. Fulwiley was playing such aggressive defense on the perimeter, and Raven Johnson as well. It seemed they made every dribble tough, even just to get into the offense. But it's a good experience for LSU. They will be better. It's also a good experience for SC as well.

Here's the slate of top 25 games tonight, with conference records added. Pac12 either gonna get in focus, or be muddled as all heck:

I have like 7 different pac 12 channels and always struggle finding games. I like Washington State vs USC and Colorado vs Oregon State.

Mulkey took zero blame for this. Said her team “hasnt been in this situation”. Smh… you are the coach!! You should be preparing them. Idk… maybe schedule better teams
For the record, Kim needs to up her scheduling period... that said I dont think LSU lost because they were 'unprepared' SC is just much deeper and they have true bench production, outscoring LSU 16-4 and giving over 30+ minutes combined worth of minutes. Meanwhile LSU only played Rosario and Poa had 3 minutes so it was essentially running on 6 players.

Mulkey had her team well prepared and LSU looked great. The issue is Kim completely neglected her bench and roster construction this offseason was lazy. If she added another transfer or two, one who could handle the ball perhaps or give quality minutes off the bench, I think its a very different story for LSU this year. The loss of Smith and Poole, you could see the writing on the wall with their depth.

SC looked much more fresh entering the 4th, LSU looked like they were running with cinderblocks at times, especially Williams and Hailey Van Lith. Williams looked like she was about to pass out at one point breathing so hard

I think it was our plan to rattle the PG into making mistakes and use the aggressive coverage to tire out LSU. I think it somewhat worked. Poa and Van Lith both looked like deer in the headlights at times.

I think Williams needs an off-season of conditioning to be ready for a big game like this. I also believe that is why her shot was off. LSU is going to need to rely on their veterans Reece, Morrow, and Johnson to make it deep into post season play.

Yeah for sure. Flaujae struggled as a freshmen I remember midway through SEC, the difference was last year LSU could sub her out to take a deep breath. This years LSU's steam, the starters are left to drown if they are tired or have an off night from not having a bench.

I still suspect Williams will be fine in the long run. She is a great player and it won't shock me if she takes over in the post season when she is on. Outside her horrendous shooting she actually played solid D and had 6 assists, frankly LSU needs to make her handle the ball like Texas is doing with Madison Booker and move Hailey Van Lith off the ball.

The beauty of what SC has is their bench is just on another level of productivity from the rest and it showed last night. Watkins, Feagin, Fulwiley and Tessa allow SC's starters to remain fresh and the bench actually is able to provide some type of scoring punch. Meanwhile LSU only has Rosario really, granted she did much better than I expected, she was always very raw coming out of HS

Not necessary. I'm not saying anything about Fairfield other than they are winning games. The schedule is what it is.

99% of the country gets 0 pac 12 channels, and you get 7.

It's a sling sports extra package. It cost an extra like 15 dollars with sling and I usually try to cut it off after the season. Wasnt trying to exaggerate or brag or anything. Just was noting that even with it, it's hard to find games
