Week 12 - Jan 22 to 28

SWERVE: This is not about two top level teams playing today but I am amused by their facts.
This is posted on ESPN in their coverage of this afternoon's Providence at Xavier game:
The Xavier Musketeers (1-16, 0-6 Big East) bring a six-game losing streak into a home matchup with the Providence Friars (10-11, 2-4 Big East), who have lost four straight. The game starts at 2:00 PM ET on Saturday, January 27, 2024.

Actually, Providence is on a two game winning streak, having beaten conference foes Villanova, in OT, on the 24th and Butler on the 21st of January.
Shows you how much ESPN knows anything about teams and conferences that they don't have exclusive coverage rights.

In a game that may be under the radar...

Middle Tennessee (15-4) visits FIU (13-5) for sole possession of first place in Conference USA. Both teams have 5-0 conference records.
FIU may be 5-0 but they are outside the top 150 in the NET. MTSU is #50 should win this ... but we shall see.

Xavier just might win their first Conference game, they are leading Providence 37-35 at the half.

Don’t be so hard . Believing that providence is on a losing streak would be correct at pretty much any point in the last 25+ years.
That is why them being on a two game conference winning streak is kinda big news for them.

Late in the Iowa-Nebraska game Jaz Shelley stepped on Clark's foot and rolled her ankle, had to be helped off the floor (Shelley, not Clark in case that was confusing).

.-.
Big second half for Clark after a bit of a quiet first half by her standards. Just short of catching Stiles for #3, will get there next game for sure.

Apparently Iowa has never lost to Nebraska while Clark has been there and she's scored 30 or more in every game.

Texas playing without Madison Booker today (hurt her hamstring in practice yesterday); but up 14 on Cinci with 6min to go.

Over in the Summit league, South Dakota and Kansas City are in a close one with 2 minutes to go. Conference leader SDSU pummeled KC earlier this week.

And it’s a pillow fight in the NEC right now as CCSU (2-4) trails Wagner (1-4) by a score of 21-16.

.-.
Michigan has been hit or miss all season. After Laila Phelia, they just do not have a consistent 2nd option. I keep hoping that Jordan Hobbs can be that 2nd option but for whatever reason, just not there yet.
Agreed. Streamed the game and ooooh boy what a difference a year makes. Hobbs development is perplexing, along with Cameron Williams. Michigan needs them to step up,

Massey had the MOV on the Xavier - Providence game. Providence wins 69-60, Massey had it 62-53. That was their best chance of a win according to Massey at a 29% chance. Their next best chance is at Butler with a 17% chance. Against UConn they are a 0% chance of a win and the predicted score is UConn 86 Xavier 41, to me that is too high a score for the Musketeers.

Man, that program has fallen far. I remember some real battles with them in the Ogwumikes/Pohlen era, including an absolute squeaker Elite 8 game that we had no business pulling out at the wire.

They haven't done much since Melanie Balcombe left for Vanderbilt.

That's right, I forgot how good they used to be. Coached by McGuff, correct? With Neighbors as an assistant.

.-.
Eastern Washington erased a double digit deficit in the 4th quarter against Northern Arizona to tie it up, but now NAU with a pair of FTs w/ 1.8 seconds left. Would be tied for Big Sky lead if the Lumberjacks win. Hit both FTs.

edit--now EWU going to the FT line w/ .6 sec left w/ a chance to tie it up

Cal Baptist whooping Stephen F. Austin. Those 2 are in a 3 way race w/ Grand Canyon in the WAC.

Butler is leading Marquette 35-29 with 8 minutes left in the 3rd. What has happened to Marquette?

A LOT can happen in 2 seconds! NAU and EWU both hit a pair of FTs, NAU threw an inbound pass out of bounds without anybody touching it, so EWU actually had a chance to win it in regulation and got a decent look. Now in OT.

18 ! conferences have an undefeated leader. 14 do not.
1 less now, Eastern Washington lost their first conference game. Drake is in some trouble too, so there might be another.

I think Gonzaga was up as much as 35-13 early against San Francisco. Kinda playing with their food after that. Dons got within 11 or 12 several times in the second half but I don't think any closer. 73-54 final. Ejim and Maxwell both scored 20 or more.

.-.
Kansas st escapes over a bad BYU 67-65

Don’t think KSt will move up to 2 even though the 2 teams ahead of them lost this week.

BYU had a bunch of chances but couldn't take advantage, K State survives by 2 at home.

Read an article recently noting Ejim will be with the Canadian National team for the Olympic qualifiers in February. Wonder if that will have any impact to Gonzaga's performance while she's away.

Illinois St. hands Drake their first loss in Missouri Valley play.

No doubt they'll miss her. Hollingsworth has had some big games for them. Huijbens was good off the bench today. The Truongs have been somewhat inconsistent, maybe they can pick up the slack while Ejim misses games.

edit--wow, Truongs were combined 3-18 today and 1-10 from 3, that just doesn't cut it
