Week 10 - Jan 5 to 11

There are a lot of bad teams, but there are differing levels of badness. Currently Cal St. Bakersfield (0-5 in conference, 5-10 overall) is hammering Long Beach St. (0-4 in conference, 1-13 overall) 45-17. Beach has been one of the better programs in the Big West, wonder what happened to them?

Similar type of game in the Missouri Valley. Southern Illinois (1-5 4-11) wiped the floor w/ Valparaiso (0-6 0-17) 97-59. How bad is Valpo? In the conversation for worst team in the country?

edit--oof, Valpo has a few single digit losses, but a bunch in the 30-40 point range, against middle of the road mid major teams

Kinda weird day in the Mountain West. Nevada beat New Mexico on the road, Boise St. beat Colorado St. UNM and CSU knocked 2 games behind the leaders because of their losses. San Diego St. barely beat Utah St. on the road. UNLV crushed Wyoming on the road. SDSU and UNLV atop the standings at 6-0.

How did Wyoming get so bad? They were always in the thick of things. 1-5 in conference and 4-11 overall.
Key win for Amanda Levins - the Pit is a tough place to win to this is a quality victory. She has struggled over the past 5 years and I hope this signals a change in direction.

Whut?! Gonzaga only managed 6 points in the first quarter against Portland, but just exploded for 34 in Q3 to take control of the game. That's...quite a swing.

edit--Zags won 69-55

There was a family rivalry in this game w/ GU junior McKynnlie Dalan and UP freshman Julia Dalan. It's not even the only sister vs sister match up for Portland in conference play. They also have Rhyan Mogel whose younger sister Dylan plays for Seattle U.

Utah was up 19 thru 3 quarters at Kansas St. Furious rally got the lead down to 4, but Utah has built it back up to 10 w/ a bit over a minute left. Utes will improve to 4-1 in the Big 12. They keep proving me wrong.

edit--just looked at the box score, didn't realize Tess Heal ended up at K State (or more likely I saw that at some point but then forgot, because there are just way too many transfers to keep track of them all)

How dare you disrespect Chicago St like that.
You know I poke a lot of fun at them, but they are actually 2-13 and both wins are against D1 schools.

Chicago St. and Valpo have a common opponent--Bradley. Scores were 85-57 and 80-44, so fairly similar.

Davidson and Richmond are in double OT in a big A10 showdown.

edit--I think it's going to a 3rd OT

Richmond pulls away in 3 OT 91-84. 1 player from Davidson and 3 from Richmond logged over 50 minutes. 3 more from Davidson were 45 minutes or more. 1 from Richmond played all 55 minutes. That is insane!

edit--whoa missed this, Doogan went off w/ 48 points, played 53 minutes

Wyoming had a 6'4 center from Douglas, WY the past four seasons. Centers like that in the Mountain West are rare. It's also rare for an in-state talent to stay in Wyoming. Everyone wants to leave. Even before her though they were competitive. I'm hoping this is just a down year. They recruit internationally a lot. Often their international players stay a year or two and then transfer to someplace warm. Laramie doesn't have a lot going on.

I am surprised that Ole Miss beating Oklahoma isn't getting the attention it deserves. That was a huge upset. Coach Yo doesn't get the respect she deserves. She has created a nice vision for her program, and the players have bought in. All the Way In. Great win for Ole Miss and hopefully we see them get a bump in the rankings.

UCF 58 Arizona 55. Bad loss.
We watched on TV instead of going.

  • Our (arguable) best offensive player, Micki Purdue, was out with a wrist injury.
  • While we should have won, in the abstract, it isn't like Arizona is good enough to call anything a bad loss.
  • And the last 30+ seconds were, um, flabbergasting. Down 3, Arizona needed to foul. They didn't. They stood around. They looked disinterested - or lost. Coach Burke literally had steam coming out of her ears at the end of the game, although she managed to gather herself. For a team that plays really, really hard, it was completely inexplicable.

Don't know about Valpo, but another team that has to be in the conversation is Bellarmine. While they played and lost to some very decent teams, their 2 wins are Wright State and a non-D1 team.

Huge day ahead in the ACC. In the feature matchup, you got the elitist, uppity, snooty Private School with a tree for a mascot VS. the commoners from the wrong side of the tracks of West Durham. 5pm EST on ESPN

Maybe it's because some are waiting for another ranked win to balance out their losses to KSU and Michigan State this season? 🤷🏾‍♀️ Regarding Coach Yo not getting respect, for me, it's that I don't recall her having much success developing her own recruits over the transfers she brings in.

Her hiring of Hillsman and downplaying what transpired in Syracuse also rubbed me the wrong way. She wants to give him a second chance, okay. But her comments came across as what happened there wasn't a big deal or people made too big a deal of it.

Or as I like to think of it, tech bros vs. Lax bros. Duke is obviously already up 1 in the hair department.

I watched the second half of that game. Triple overtime! Doogan was amazing. 17-28, 8-12 from 3, 6-6 FT, 13 rebounds. She was ice in final overtime. Both teams played at a high level. Very entertaining.

Davidson is a pretty decent squad. I’m sure Richmond is too, I haven’t watched them yet.

Interesting SEC Network game today at 4PM, #5 Oklahoma at #6 Kentucky. Both teams trying to rebound from a loss in their previous game.
I'm guessing that Key is still unavailable for UK which is a big deal, IMO.
And it's unlikely that both will be this highly ranked come tomorrow afternoon.

Nice to see the Canadian version of ESPN, TSN has a slate of games on today. While I use other resources to watch NCAAW during the season, I do what I can to support because heaven knows TSN could do a lot more.
