Week 10 - Jan 5 to 11

?????

Montana State ties the score with 42 seconds against Eastern Washington. Then no OT?

A tie?

Did Eastern Washington have to catch a plane?
I think that was ESPN being goofy. Now I'm seeing 72-70 Montana St. in OT.

edit--another big game for Chirrick, she's gotta be in the conversation for Big Sky POY at this point

No idea. Guess ties are allowed in the Big Sky conference? 🤷‍♀️

Maybe the ESPN box score was delayed. It went to OT in the end.

Michigan state is really good. That win over Michigan was more about Michigan playing poorly imo.
Until they face Maryland, UCLA, USC or Iowa, I'd say they're good. They need to win a few of these games to really make a push in conference play.

They spotted Washington a healthy double digit lead in the first and figured out a way to get take the lead during the second quarter. What was odd is that Howell didn't play for most of the 2nd quarter. Not sure why. Even the announcers were perplexed.

They've lost depth at the post/forward position with Alexander out for the season. Hallock has been dealing with an injury and hasn't been available for several games now. If they pull off at least 2 wins against this group, then they can be considered really good in my opinion.

You see everybody, this is why I don't trust Washington. Getting thrashed by Michigan St. At home. Jumped out to an 11 point lead in Q1, then just decided to quit doing anything.
With respect to quit doing anything, Michigan State made a good adjustment and did a better job defending Ladine. All of her scoring was in the first half because Mich State kept going under the screen giving her a clear shot. Sellers had to manage foul trouble which also hampered the Huskies offensively.

Howell being on the bench for most of the second half didn't help matters. Hopefully Langley provides some clarity as to why because that didn't make any sense to me considering how the second quarter played out.

UW went from up 11 to down 22 in about 25 minutes. That is terrible. 33 point swings are not the mark of a good team. They put a little window dressing on at the end, I'm not impressed.

No argument there, but it still strikes me as odd that they didn't have Howell playing for most of the second quarter. If it was foul trouble, I kind of get it, but to not to have her when Michigan State started their run in the second was a head scratcher.

Just woke up this morning to see the score.

Interesting. After the NAU game I was checking last night and it showed a tie. Probably a good thing I didn't need to stay up any later to watch more

Bobcats Dodge the bullet

That and bench points. Clemson had 40 compared to NC State's 8 points. That's mind boggling.
Yeah everything yall mentioned here is pretty much it.

State is good, but they are thin. They have 4 really good players, Zoe, Zam, Tilda and Pierre. Then there is a gulf. Qadence, Quigley, Cox and Lunan have all had moments, but they also are all very inconsistent game to game, quarter to quarter. So you take Zam out for this game you lose your best shooter, your best player maker and your energy piece/on court leader. That's hard to replace for any team, but when the gap between your starters and your bench is this wide, it's extra hard.

That elevated Quigley into the starting line up alongside Qadence when in reality, neither one is really worthy of starting from what I've seen. They both have their strengths and have had games that were encouraging, but it hasn't come together for either of them this year. So now the starting line up is 3 on 5 offensively and the bench just got that much shorter.

In the 4th quarter State began the quarter with a 5 point lead and Wes tried to get Zoe some rest and immediately had to put her back in because of horrible shot selection and careless turnovers which kept the door open for Clemson. She comes in and the offense is still stalling and then KP goes down with a cramp and leaves the game for a few minutes and Clemson took full advantage. No Zam and no KP spells doom. At the 6:45 mark KP subbed out with her injury and it was a 1 point game, she came back in at 3:05 and State was down 9.

State was dominating in the paint, Tilda and KP both had great games, but without KP in the game they could double Tilda and State had no outside shooting to help offset that and honestly had some horrible shot selections in the 4th.

Clemson aint bad. I don't mean to confuse them with a power house, but they have multiple girls who can hit from outside, multiple girls who can handle the ball and penetrate, good passing skills, good spacing and good shot selections. They don't have a ton of size, but they aren't a doormat. It was the first time Clemson beat State in 15 years! They played a nice game and State's depth issues showed this game and it really highlighted how badly they need someone to step up at the 3 spot. Qadence had her best game of the year against Cal and followed it up with her worst. She was bad. 2-10 from the field, 0-7 from 3 and took some really bad shots IMO. Not trying to single her out, just pointing out that State has a hole at the 3 spot and have not found an answer yet.

State's a team that will be very vulnerable if any of the "big 4" are injured or sick or in foul trouble. If everyone is healthy and playing they can win the league. If just 1 is out, well they can drop a game to the Clemson's of the world.

My issue with that talk is all she does is score. And NOPY candidates aren’t just who scores the most points
She truly is a great kid so I wish her nothing but success. That being said, she really is one-dimensional as a scorer. While she has an occasional double digit rebound game, her rebounding is below average given her physical presence. Defense already discussed. This is heresay but I've seen it mentioned multiple times over several years: during recruiting Iowa was interested. Since their mantra was more of an uptempo pace they said they had a plan for slimming her down some. No idea if that had any bearing on her choice of Iowa State. Right now I'm doubtful she'll succeed in the W.

I watched her rebounding for a large chunk of a game last week, and her approach seems similar to her approach to defense. If the ball caroms toward her, she grabs it, and she has really good hands. Ain't no way she's gonna go chase many rebounds down, though.

Y'all might be a pack of wolves, but certainly not the top dog 😤

I have no explanation for that. Although looking at box score she ended up with about the same minutes as Sellers and Ladine. Howell didn't get many shots up for 31 minutes of action. I noticed Harvey scored 9, I think most of it was late, in only 14 minutes. She's kind of a sparkplug. She's young and has been mistake prone at times, Langley doesn't fully trust her, but she's got a knack for scoring the ball.

The better question is will Texas win by over 20 or not
I doubt it. Texas’ priority seems to be defense first and second. Offensively they don’t seem to put the pedal down until the game is close. LSU has no answer for Oldacre. So I think a margin of 10 is probably the ceiling here.

As much as it’s painful to say but I think that Kim pulls off a win here. They are at home. Plus I believe that she ripped her team an ass chewing because of their two losses earlier.
This is not impossible, but believing it is against my moral code.

edit: also please note that I tried very hard not to comment on the erroneous metaphor. But it started giving me a headache, so I'm back.

I think LSU could. Their backcourt is talented. Texas has a big advantage inside. Koval hasn't shown she can hang with the SEC yet, and Texas has great size and depth. Joyner can get physical but is shorter. Knox and Johnson are young and a little out of position. Excited to watch this game!

You think of the Summit League and it's pretty much always been South Dakota St. and South Dakota. Maybe North Dakota St. is going to crash the party this year. About to move to 4-0 in conference and 15-2 overall. They did lose to the 2 best teams they've played, Nebraska and Gonzaga. Not a lot else in the OOC, although they drubbed Montana St. Anyway will be interesting to see if the Bizon can keep pace with the Jackrabbits as conference play moves along.

Texas Tech w/ another road win, now 5-0 18-0. This time Cincinnati, while it may not be a big win, the Bearcats did just prove against Iowa St. that they aren't an automatic W.
