Week 1 11/4-11/10

Olivia Pollerd poured in 30 for Santa Clara in a win over Fresno St.

She's an interesting story. Committed to Duke, was released from the commit after a coaching change. Committed to Washington...who then had a coaching change. She did attend UW, but transferred out after 1 season. This is her 3rd year at SCU. Most of her teammates transferred out after last season.

Cleveland St. beat Chicago St. 111-67. You really have to wonder why they bother. They've been incredibly bad for years. It's hard to see any coach ever having any level of success there.

Crazy tale of two halves in Provo. BYU couldn't get anything going on offense in 1st half, trailed Wyoming 40-27. Heading down the stretch in Q4 BYU is on a 45-17 run since halftime.

I really like Delaney Gibb. 18/6/6 so far today.
Another Canadian who has gone under the radar a bit with the attention going to Swords, Prosper, Fournier and Howell. Apparently her younger sister Piper may be even better than her. :D

I am watching Arizona State and Arkansas state. And Arizona state has kind of unraveled. Led by around 10. Trail 55-51 at the half

Arizona state is an interesting team. Their coach has a record of 19-40. But there has been progress each year. So, I don’t consider her in trouble. Not yet anyway. And they should do better in the big xii.

Lots of turn over on this team too. I only recognize a couple of players from last year.
Hummmmm

Okay, to begin unraveling is the ASU brand since Adair arrived from the mid majors in Delaware.

Since CTT retired with a 12 and 14 record in her final year there has been consistent, unrelenting mediocrity in Tempe. I wish I could share your optimism in looking for progress or some positive sign of life but unfortunately the dumpster fire while not intensifying continues at a soul-crushing rate.

Year. Record. Scoring Margin A/T.
2022. 8-20. -9. .8
2023. 11-20. -9 .8

She's demonstrated that while an outstanding coach at the mid level she's way in over her head at a P4 program which is on the way to being a P32 program.

And then there's the eye test. As a season ticket holder I'm subjected some of the most what I have to call it horrible basketball as Adair's inability to recruit places mismatched athletes at least over the last 2 years against really fine athletes in the pac-12. Hard to tell if Adair is a decent coach at the P4 level when you have middle school athletes competing against pros.

It's not even like a car wreck where you can't help but stare at, I just finally have to look away. As one of an average of 200 people in the stands it's as if we're visiting a civil war site like the battlefield at Vicksburg. Finally had to cancel season tickets and while I still hold season tickets for the Grand Canyon Lopes and the NAU lumberjacks two programs that are in fact making tremendous progress and play exciting basketball I can make this prediction if Adair remains at ASU she will collect 100 losses through the course of 5 years and permanently drive a stake through the heart of ASU women basketball.

I was stunned that in the coaches preseason poll the Sun Devils were picked 15th -I don't know much about the Houston Cougars but they must truly play at a middle school level to fall below the standard that Adair has in Tempe.

Today the Sun Devils play the Grand Canyon Antelopes in one of these classic tournaments in downtown Phoenix. That match up I think will be illustrative of the spiral that Tempe has put itself in and I have very little hope with the current administration at ASU but there will be any will to make a meaningful change. Any competent coach would look at the ASU job shake their head and politely walk away.

As to Adair's future even this continuing mediocrity may not cost her her job due to apathy in the ASU administration a weak athletic director and the fact that ASU would not even consider paying the type of dollars it would take to get an interview with a decent coach. And as I indicated no coach with any intelligence would look at the landscape in ASU and even accept a five-year guaranteed contract at 2 million a year would not incentivize a competent coach. (BTW.... the chances that the ASU administration would offer a decent contract are the same of as me playing in the NBA)

There is no hope of winning in Tempe.

You and I have entirely different conceptions of progress.

Very interested to see State and SC. State is currently very inexperienced and injured at the 5 spot. Their best line up features 4 guards - tons of experience, talent and athleticism at the guard spot for the Pack but not much experienced length at all.

Maddy Cox only played 8 minutes in game 1 and I was expecting her to play a bigger role this year but perhaps she hasn’t shown enough growth. Tilda Trygger is a talented 6’5 maybe even 6’6 international player from Sweden but appears more comfortable on the wings than banging in the post. Lorena Awou has nice size but is super raw. I believe she started basketball maybe her sophomore year of HS? Anyhow, true freshman and maybe a high ceiling but super raw. Mallory Collier has good touch on offense but is not a great defender or rebounder at this point. Lizzy Williamson is a 5th year transfer C but plays very upright and stiff - State will be in trouble if she has to play much.

Last year Ashlyn Williams ate State up in the final 4 with 20 rebounds. SC has a handful of talented 6’3ish players who rebound well and idk that State has an answer for that.

For State to compete the guards are going to have to be on their A game. That means a more confident and less uptight Saniya Rivers than what she showed in the FF game last year. Also means Zoe Brooks needs to continue to show growth in her game and for Azaiah James to get it going early.

Does anyone know what NC State team looks like this season and could they defend SC guards?

They have basicallly the same guards that took them to the final four last year. Very good offensively. Rivers is good defensively. The others may have improved during the Off season.

The questions in the post remain

At the JMA Dome in Salt City…

Syracuse and St. Joe’s are locked in a tight battle, with the Orange behind with a score of 36-39 at halftime.

St. Joe’s has the height (unlike the last team Cuse played, Niagara) and are getting rebounds and blocks. Frankly speaking, St. Joe’s is out-hustling and out-muscling Cuse right now. I haven’t looked at the stats, but it feels like St. Joe’s is getting every rebound and all of the lose balls. I also think they are winning the TO game.

Not sure what changes Coach Jack will make at halftime. I would not say that the Orange are playing poorly (they’ve had some really good baskets) but perhaps they are not as mentally locked in as they should be.

On a personal note, I realized I’m going to be out of town for work on Wednesday when Maryland comes to the Dome! :( I was so looking forward to seeing UConn South play in person.

Anyone got predictions for today's games. Quite the slate.

My not so bold prediction is that Duke beats Maryland. I was thinking Oregon had a shot vs Baylor but Baylor is pretty experienced.

Not looking good

I'm thinking Penn St. lost quite a bit from last year and expectations weren't high this year. About to move to 3-0, although schedule hasn't been particularly tough so far.

Duquesne will lose this game, but hats off to Megan McConnell--19 pts/10 reb/7 assists.

Boo! Stanford-Gonzaga game getting pre-empted on ESPN2 by end of a men's game that is dragging on.

Now it's getting pre-empted for South Carolina-NC State. Sometimes I really hate ESPN. The game they are supposed to be showing is streaming on the their app, it's not even on ESPNNews or ESPN+.

STILL waiting to see the game that is supposed to be on, but it looks like it's almost over already after Q1. Stanford destroying Gonzaga.

Just saw the score and yikes.

Thought it would be a tad more competitive.

Kudos to Maryland. I liked all the pieces they picked up in the off-season. I knew Smikle was good but I didn't realize she was as good as she's played this season. Overall they played better defense than I expected and their pieces fit well. As for Duke, I knew Fournier was raw but didn't realize how raw. She's fun to watch nonetheless. They are still a young team and really bit themselves today with rushed shots and poor turnovers. It was an interesting watch.

Syracuse goes down, 84-70. The players for St. Joe’s are ecstatic. Eavesdropping on the broadcast, this could end up being a huge win for them long term for the season.

I did not know this, but apparently St. Joe’s returned almost all of their team from last year. Consequently, they look much more put together than a Syracuse team that is clearly struggling to fit all the new pieces together.

Coach Jack did not look too upset on the sidelines. My impression was that she basically sees this game as a learning moment.

I have a lot of confidence in Freese assembling a good team out of chaos, but seems like I overrated Duke a bit.

Going to be the new UNC?

.-.
Also I will add that Syracuse started playing very lackluster when they went down by 10. At least, that is what the eye test told me. A lot of hero ball, a lot of unforced errors. Some people around me were constantly grumbling about the refs but they were not the issue IMO.

Game 1 for TCU was pretty much all Sedona Prince and Hailey Van Lith. Today Madison Conner says don't forget about me. 30 points, 9-16 behind the arc.

Okay, Allie Turner is the lone bright spot for Gonzaga today. 18 points for the second straight game and she can really shoot the 3. A freshman that was not on the radar at all as far as I know, she can ball.

Some alums sitting court side for Iowa-VA Tech. Kitley, Martin and Marshall.
