Betts had her way against Colgate. 31 pts/9 reb/3 blocks.

Aarnisalo is another Fr. catching my eye early. Looked solid against Ole Miss, today she scored 19 on 8-10 shooting.

She's in year 5 on the job.

I ain't got the energy to argue tonight. Lemme eat another Sausalito cookie with a side of melatonin and get ready to call it a night. At 8:24 pm... yeah I'm growing old :( and cranky too

There was some back and forth, but Iowa was in control most of the game and beat VA Tech 71-52. There's more talk about other players, I think O'Grady was kind of forgotten. She scored 18 on 9-9 shooting, a Czinano type of game for her today.

I agree. Her ability to play the 5 frees up Stuelke to play the 4 and be outside. Stuelke looks to be playing with a lot more freedom compared to her first couple seasons. This could be very interesting and problematic for BIG10 opponents.

She's recruited well, she's brought some excitement to the program. I'm not saying she's done a bad job. But she was declared a great coach before she'd ever coached a game, and I feel like she still hasn't lived up to the amount of acclaim she's received. That's just my opinion.

Just for fun, compare her to Niele Ivey. Both started at the same time, in the same conference. You can say there was more rebuilding to be done at Duke, but Muffet's last year was actually worse than McCallie's. I think both coaches are still trying to get their programs from being good to truly elite. Neither has gotten beyond the Sweet 16, although Ivey has gotten there 3 times to only once for Lawson. Who will take the next step first?

Kudos to Maryland. . . . Overall they played better defense than I expected and their pieces fit well.
It's not that hard to play defense against a team that can't make layups. Or threes. Or free throws.

Prosper hitting threes up 43 points with 20 seconds to go.............
She was 2-6 overall, 1-2 from 3. Will this be something she can do consistently? She hasn't been great shooting outside the paint to date. Something to watch.

The melatonin hasn't kicked in yet.. anyway... How long was Ivey an assistant coach at ND before she got the gig? From my recollection, Lawson was an assistant for the Celtics for one season before she became head coach. ND has had the advantage of having star players, unlike Duke. ND has 5 players on their roster who have been All-ACC at least once... compared to Duke's 1 player. Head to head... Lawson 2 Ivey 1.

It's too early in the season to be this cold blooded...... all the leaves ain't fallen off the trees yet

But yeah... I wasn't that impressed with Maryland's defense. #15 did some good things for them though.

Oregon sneaking by Baylor … I didn’t expect that given how much Oregon has fallen off in recent years.

This is a very different team compared to previous seasons. With who Graves picked up in the portal, we shouldn't be surprised that they will be much more competitive. Baylor didn't do themselves any favours in this game either. The shot selection, especially from 3 had me scratching my head. They had their opportunity to win but couldn't close it out.

Concerned about Kyei however. She played more minutes than expected due to Muhamed (sic?) fouling out and the team being short handed. She didn't look comfortable out there. Could Oregon be rushing her back too soon?

Notre Dame feels like an easier place to attract talent to than Duke - but maybe I’m wrong. Doesn’t exactly feel like an apples to apples comparison. Notre Dame has a recent national championship. Multiple visits to the final four. They were coming off 8 consecutive seasons as a 1 seed before Muffets final year and then Ivey took over.

That’s a situation you are just trying not to ruin. Not build.

Duke was last a 1 seed in 08-09. Hadn’t made the tournament for 2 straight years when Lawson took over. Duke has a nice history to be proud of but they aren’t Notre Dame. Harder to win there IMO.

Appreciate the recap (I didn't get to watch the game).

Let's see if Oregon is able to carry this momentum and if Baylor bounces back. Hopefully for Oregon they are not rushing Kyei back onto the floor too soon.

I'm lucky I had an afternoon nap and was able to stay up. It was interesting to say the least. Some chippiness in the first quarter between a couple guards but that settled down. I liked Oregon's style of play overall.

And a huge THANK YOU for the new court. Much easier on the eyes, while still keeping the forest theme in place. A heck of a lot better than watching the Houston Texans and their Christmas ornament uniforms during Sunday Night Football. ;)

Graves has probably stopped the bleeding, for now. Oregon may catch a team or two self destructing and win, but I can also see them falling to a lesser talented team on any given night. They were up 16 late and then Graves just let them keep playing until it was in single digits before calling a timeout. During that Baylor run, he just resigned to focusing his offense on Kelly, when there were others who had been playing well. Oregon also had trouble stopping Jada's penetration...partly because they looked very tired and Graves didn't call a timeout until after a Baylor like 10 point run.

Speaking of Notre Dame...wow they've got some talent. Although fairly short handed at this point. Waiting to get Westbeld, Watson and Karlen available.
Watson is out for the season but I think Karlen will probably be back in December and Westbeld in January

Niele had 12 years with ND and 1 with the Grizzlies before getting the head job with the Irish.

The team she took over was pretty horrible, but Miles and Citron committed within a week of her hiring, citing their desire to play for her.

Idk where it is easier to recruit, but recruiting has always been Niele’s calling card (even if she favors a quality over quantity approach that sometimes frustrates ND fans).

Oh, I missed that. I gathered that they aren't expecting Bransford back this year.

Initial thoughts. Week 1.

I could write blurbs on every team I watched but don't want to be too long winded. I think teams that got me the most excited about their potential were Notre Dame, LSU, Maryland, Tennessee, Kentucky, Alabama

Teams that I think are going to be fine but are working out some kinks are South Carolina, USC, Duke, Iowa.

Teams that I was a bit disappointed in are UCLA, NC State, Indiana.

Notre Dame is going to be really good. I didn't understand how much of a scorer Liatu King was. Happy to see Olivia Miles at full strength again.

Iowa is going to be alright. Shout out Jan Jensen and their offense. Even if they only scored in the 70s yesterday, in both games they kept generating quality looks. Big Ten is really good so I'm not saying they won't lose 10 games, but I think they will be a good team.

I'm down on UCLA after hyping them all summer. Love their freshman point. I get Kiki hasn't played and may make the players around her better. But I'm still not convinced Gardener and Barker fit, though Gardener has played well. I'm actually somewhat bummed she doesn't have a bigger role.

Shout out Oregon and Stanford.
