Tied at halftime. I saw the score and had to take a peek. 👀

The story seems to be that the 3 ain't falling for Tennessee and it is falling for UT Martin. Tennessee also went on a run where they couldn't stop fouling.

UCSB is blitzing Seattle U. 57-23. I figured SU isn't very good, but this is still a pretty surprising score to me.

edit--89-49 final

There was an article this week in a Knoxville paper where Coach Caldwell noted these concerns. She wasn't happy with the team's shot selection and the fouling.

It's basically 5 seconds on offense where they take the first open shot and then 30 seconds on defense where UT-Martin takes it down to the last second with each possession..rinse and repeat. It's gotta be hard to find offensive rhythm operating like that.

They seem better in the second half where at least the ball is exchanging hands before a shot goes up. Tennessee has a big advantage in the post and they're not even trying to play inside-out. I would say it's more than just shot selection, it's also their offensive philosophy/strategy that is shooting them in the foot this game. They have advantages that they're not using.

MD 34-9 in the 4th and a comfortable looking 85-66 win, even though they trailed 57-53 starting the 4th
The Terps were down 58-48 late in the 3rd quarter. The UNRANKED Addi Mack took over the game. Scored 23 points to lead the Terps.

Uh oh Rutgers! Got thumped by Stony Brook 71-54.

Oof, Iowa destroyed Evansville 119-43. Hawkeyes got 56 off the bench if I added correctly, including 20 and 11 from freshmen Hays and Deal.

Competition hasn't been great, but Ava Heiden might be a double-double machine this season.

Somebody convince me Caldwell isn't doing exactly the same thing as Bruno did at DePaul, only with higher rated recruits.

Fight On!!!!
69-68 over NC State
Winning College Football GIF by Wells Fargo

Well maybe USC will be okay this year w/out Juju.

Hats off to NC State for opening the season playing 2 ranked opponents, while almost everybody else is playing Sisters of the Poor or Creampuff U.

DePaul did that? I guess I don’t recall the 5 for 5 subs every 3 minutes.
Seems a little closer to Mitchell’s 40 minutes of dread at KY.

My hunch is that this is a gimmick and gimmicks don’t work against the highest levels of competition, but what do I know?

Maybe not the hockey line subs, but frenetic on D and O, seemingly not valuing possession of the ball. Pushing tempo at all costs, and throwing the ball towards the rim as soon as you can once you cross half court. Syracuse did something similar as well w/ Q.

She will likely need to adjust her rotations a bit eventually

I’ve been pretty impressed with Mack. Any news on when Smikle will return?

Juju and Jazzy are going to be a great duo. Unfortunately, I’m not sure Gottlieb will be the right person to lead them.
Next year they will have four wings that want to do the same things on the basketball court. It will take a special coach to make that work.

I would not be surprised if Juju isn’t there next year. She should be old enough for the WNBA and you also have the Saudi League starting up.

Well State certainly folded yesterday.

Thoughts on this specific game : really thought State was the better team, they just absolutely gave it away in the 4th. 4-14 with 8 turnovers and ending the game 0-5 and 0-2 at the line to lose by 1. I thought Davidson was fantastic, particularly in the 2nd for USC and I thought Jones was very good especially in the first half. Kara Dunn didn’t make the impact she’s capable of, but USC has a nice core there.

State played too selfish at times. Too much one on one. The ball stuck. They were 5-15 I think I read on lay ups - I’d argue a lot of that was because of poor ball movement and having to take contested lay ups in traffic. Wes has to figure out how to involve Tilda more. 7 shots isn’t enough. She’s a walking mismatch for most 5s in the college game at 6’6 and able to shoot the 3, not only that but she’s shown ability to pass and make smart basketball plays with the ball. Samuels shouldn’t have more attempts than Tilda. Pierre was 4-16 from the field - that’s wild and also probably an anomaly but certainly played into the fact State was -7 on second chance points despite dominating the glass by +14. Also Zam being limited due to foul trouble certainly changed this game which highlights States need to develop the bench more (although Quigley did her thing, someone else has to step up)

Big picture - ultimately not super concerned. 1-1 after 2 games against top 20 competition on neutral courts - both games came down to the wire, that coupled with a competitive win over Maryland on a neutral court in the pre season tells me State is in a good spot. They have a lot to improve on and left a lot of meat on the bone in these first couple of games but I also trust Wes to figure it out over the course of the season. State challenged themselves early, and it’ll benefit the team in the long run. They could be 2-0 with 40 point wins over N.C. Central and the like and feel good about things, but ultimately this path is better. Find your warts early and work to fix them.

Ultimately this is one they should have won and could have won. Would be great for the end of season resume but they also have plenty more opportunities to stack quality wins going forward.

But it always stings when you give away a game.

But with $NIL and endorsements... what's the rush? She might be able to make more money/fame as a college star, no?

Than the W, yes.

Than the Saudis, no.

Those folks could dwarf the Russian oligarchs who funded the teams that D, Sue played for. The challenge would be getting women to go to a place where womens' rights are still limited. (But they can now drive cars!!)
Nneka has signed up.

To clarify, Project B reports that it is not Saudi funded.

Thank you for the info.

I did some digging and it looks like Saudi involvement is unclear. Eg, I found this:

Yes for college and NIL. But, I am still wondering about this Saudi League upstart
