Week 1!!! 11/3-11/9

I was watching Chavez and was thinking “oh, that’s why Dawn and Geno didn’t recruit her.”

I know that’s not really fair. But I was thinking that after a few of her shots.

Wasn't South Carolina among the final 10 teams that were on Chavez's list? As for UConn, I am sure the interest was low for both parties.

He is certainly appreciated in Raleigh. It’s hard for me gauge how he’s perceived or talked about or not in other parts of the country, maybe it’s his age and lack of flash and flare that helps him fly under the radar? Idk, but Wes has been the best coach in the ACC for a while now and as you pointed out he’s done it with multiple different rosters.
He beat Rutgers in the NCAAs when he was at Chattanooga. Always knew he was good, and 859 wins entering season. Losses under 300.

Can't recall if it made the list, but I'm looking forward to this match up between Fairfield and Villanova tonight. Think this is a good opening game for both teams to see where they are to start the season.

Also get a little Canadian content with Jasmine Bascoe (Villanova) and Cyanne Coe (Fairfield) entering their sophomore seasons. Both had a good start for their freshman season. Looking forward to seeing them in action and to see how they've improved.

Observations from a couple of games I've watched so far:
1. UCLA/SDSU: SDSU was completely overmatched but put up a really solid fight, all things considered. Kiki Rice coming off the bench is eye opening as @nwhoopfan noted. Betts didn't get nearly enough touches considering she's 6-7 going up against a 6-0 opposing player. A win's a win but I wasn't wowed at all. Jaquez played well and I thought Kneepkens generally did too aside from her shot not falling.

2. Duke/Baylor: Taliah Scott is going to be a star in Waco this year. I also think Duke is going to be fine despite an ugly start to the season. They've never been a team to play pretty basketball and that isn't changing this year. I think they'll miss Okananwa a lot though. She was such a good high energy player for them. Doesn't look like Fournier's touch inside has improved much in the offseason which will be crucial for their success.

3. NC State/Tennesse: game of the season so far. Really fun game which is the standard watching Tennessee under Kim. Great playmaking down the stretch on both sides and a great win for NC State. Khamil Pierre continues to be the most slept on player in America. She's an absolutely difference maker on both ends. NC State's starting 5 was pretty rock solid across the board, and it's no small feat to play at that pace for 40 minutes against Tennessee. Zero bench production from NC State is alarming, though.

4. UCONN/Louisville: I only caught the first half and then turned it off. UCONN looked stellar. Sarah Strong is just ridiculously good and one of the craftiest passers in the country. The offense should run through her this year. Fudd looked really good, glad to see she's healthy. I thought Arnold played great in the first half and showed improvement on her perimeter shot. Nothing noteworthy from El Alfy, Williams and Shade. For all the talk of Geno having immense depth, he only played 6 players 10+ minutes in game that was a blowout from start to finish. Louisville looked pretty awful in the first half but it looks like they put together a solid second half. I think Jeff Walz's Final Four days are in the past but his teams are consistently competitive and I think they'll be a handful for any ACC team to go up against.

Megan Anderson is ballin...14 points and a 1000 in her career. Nova has closed to within single digits 28-22.

carly thibault-dubonis's last year before bigger things?
honestly, depending on timing. I wouldn’t be that surprised if she interviewed for the UConn job someday.

I am not saying she would get the job. But an interview would probably make a lot of sense.

I really thought she would get a look last year. If I'm Arkansas, Missouri and Wisconsin, I would have at least talked to her. Maybe she prefers staying in the northeast, but she's going to do good things in a major conference somewhere.

I vaguely recall there was one job where I believe she was approached and declined to interview. Perhaps Wisconsin?

She's smart enough to realize that she's got time and taking a job with no admin support is a dead end, so she can wait for a good opportunity.

Wasn't Shay Bollin kind of a big recruit at one point? I honestly cannot keep track of these players. She's gone Duke-Illinois-Wisconsin. Will she go for her 4th school in 4 years next season? Anyway Badgers beat Oakland.

Oh, Bollin didn't play last year. Don't know if she was still at Illinois or at Wisconsin at that point.

She was still at Illinois. This is her first year at Wisconsin.

Yes she was. I remember being at a South Carolina open practice when she was visiting and saw her across the way observing it. ESPN had her ranked #33 in ‘22 class.

Fairfield beats Nova 75-63
Anderson had 35 for Fairfield and Bascoe had 30 for Nova.
While Bascoe's stat line was impressive, I was surprised that Villanova relied that much on her. She took just over 40% of their shots last night and the team struggled when she wasn't on the court due to foul trouble. Her decision making, both offensively and defensively, will be important if this is how Villanova is going to operate this season.

She drew a 3 point shooting foul just at half time, which Fairfield got 2 points out of. She picked up her third and fourth fouls, within minutes of each other late in the game which had her on the bench for most of the fourth. That gave Fairfield the opportunity to go on a run and maintain their lead for the balance of the game. Looking forward to her homecoming game of sorts in Toronto this Sunday against VCU to see if any adjustments are made.

Yeah, she has dealt with some injuries. Things just haven’t ever come together for her. She has a little sister coming onto the scene, but I don’t know a lot about her.

Bascoe is the new Lucy Olsen at Villanova. Their offense is going to rely heavily on her.

I feel a bit bad for Nova. They are really struggling to retain players. Another bright spot from the team last season Maddie Webber relocated to Illinois over the summer.

That's my biggest fear, especially from a development perspective. If she can maintain 40%+ for a field goal percentage, okay...........but she's a streaky shooter sometimes. This past summer it did more harm than good for Canada Basketball and I think it impacted their efforts during the bronze medal game during the U19 tourney.

Tonight former NAU Lumberjack coach l Loree Payne leads the Broncos into the Stanford campus with an 8:00 p.m. MST tip.

Payne made a definite statement in the opener as Santa Clara scored 108 points with five players in double figures and they launched 43 threes. Former NAU Lumberjack Sophie Glancy who accompanied her coach to the Bay area played 10 minutes scored 11 points, five rebounds, one assist, one block as coach Payne played the entire squad.

Should be a fantastic opportunity for both the Broncos and the Cardinal. I'll be looking forward to listening to that game as I root for the former Lumberjacks.

At the end of the 1st quarter in Tallahassee, FSU is down, 26-24 to GA Southern. Plenty of fouls on both teams in the quarter.

It's not every day that the FB team wants to win by a BB score, but the beleaguered LSU football team would be happy with the 68-9 lead Kim's team has in the 2nd half.

Shame on a P4 school for facing a non-DI team. OkSt bludgeoning NAIA Langston 88-21 after 3.

SE Louisiana 16 points
LSU Tigers 13 turnovers

who will end with more?
and which team should be more ashamed that its a contest?
