We need Samson back ASAP

Hurley has said nothing lately on his return. Couple weeks ago it was very soon.
The thing is when Hurley is forced to give timelines they are not very accurate, but when you don't expect it that's when he will reappear in uniform.

Lots of expectation for him to help team on his return but I fear he will not give as much as we want him to. Been a big buildup.

Agreed. I wonder if SJ starting was more of a function of Hurley not typically going to freshmen or if he indeed outplayed AK in practice. I know that AK was injured for a bit in the preseason, but I think it's certainly worth debating. By the time he comes back, he'll have missed so much time and opportunity for development that I fear he will be a liability. Given the rigors of the Big East, we may not have may opportunities to get him "match fit".

I think it’s the same thing I’ve been saying all along. Fit.

Sanogo is going to be asked to hard hedge and guard bigs who can shoot on the perimeter. What is needed at the 4 when he’s in is rebounding and rim protection. On offense, Sanogo can go outside or inside, he is complemented by a guy who can throw entry passes over the D or score in the paint if Sanogo draws the center out. Plus they were teammates and can communicate in French.

Clingan is going to patrol the paint. He needs a 4 that can guard the perimeter on D, especially bigger shooters. On offense he‘s going to stay inside or screen. He needs a 4 that is a very good outside shooter, and a good passer to either shoot or move the ball when it comes back out. They are very complementary players, and AK can make entry passes and smart cuts to the basket to take advantage of DCs passing.

Samson is like Bigfoot, you believe he's out there, somewhere, but there is no evidence. Every now and then there is a sighting or a press report. But nothing solid.

If and when he is seen on the court, that will be the time to believe. In the meantime, don't hold your breath. December, January, February, March. It's all a tease.

No one here and probably even Hurley knows exactly what he will bring and how he will integrate at this point. It’s going to take games. Several games.

I think I saw him at Walmart, might have been with Elvis.

i send thankyou cards. poeple seem to like them.

Agreed. We can win without him. But having a 6’10 long forward to help on the boards, and play defense on scoring forwards would clear up a big weakness.
We need Sampson Johnson back because he'll be 5 foul buffer just in case Clingan and Sanogo get into foul trouble early in a critical game.

Samson. And it’s unlikely that scenario ever happens.

He'll help up front and hopefully prevent more rebounding deficits but he's not a guard. Our guards are not great shooters. That's an area that has needed improvement and it hasn't

No. Johnson is an entirely different player than either of them. Freak athlete who can guard just about anyone if his BBIQ is improved. Much more limited offensively.

Here is the key "if". Again hope it has improved and I hope he's everything all of you want when he comes back, I'm rooting for the depth to grow. But compare a freshman Karaban on defense to a freshman Johnson last year it's not close. Karaban guards people Johnson lost people on D.

Hurley tends to value defense. Samson is better than Karaban in that regard. AK and SJ are complementary players. I'd like to see an even split between them with some of the mins coming from Alleyne.

You are correct. I, for one, am not convinced that Johnson will be a contributor at this level. I know some people on this board don't want to here it (and I really hope I'm wrong)... but I worry he's going to end up on the Springs plan.

THe big deal here is that there have been games recently where we had matchup problems at the 4 spot that hurt us bigtime and we just had nowhere else to go.

Karaban can't deal with "Big" 4s well because he has strength/length issues as a young player - He got cooked by Freemantle. And also struggles with mobility when asked to play the perimeter - he got cooked by Bryce Hopkins both spot up and off the bounce because he knew he was outmatched and couldn't close out hard.

In those bad matchups, we now have a potential answer in the toolkit for Hurley to turn to.

And for an opponent, its much harder to scout the rotation if you have to account for both a lob threat(johnson) and a sniper(karaban) as they cycle in and out of the game.

.-.
More than anything, defensively it makes sense to have karaban and Clingan on the floor at the same time and SJ and Sanogo on the floor at the same time for rim protection and rebounding. Clingan helps with Karabans weakness and Johnson with Sanogos. Karaban and Sanogo at the same time is giving up rim protection and rebounding.

Doesn't playing Clingan and Sanogo together do the same thing?
Samson is more athletic and able to defend the perimeter.

Karaban has been getting killed defensively. Issue with Clingan and Sanogo defensively is you out Sanogo on a mobile 4 where he will have to defend on perimeter. Easy way to get fouls.

Offensively, sanogo needs space to work. If you are going to ISO sanogo, where is Clingan going to go? You need a shooting 4 to make the double team pay.

Tbh, I don’t think Hurley likes the spacing offensively with double centers and he worries defensively about exposing sanogo.

I have a hard time seeing SJ get significant minutes unless he breaks out in his first game action. Until AJ proves himself as scoring threat, SJ won’t see meaningful minutes. Can’t be 3 on 5 on offense.

I know the conventional wisdom is that Johnson is exactly what we need to provide a more physical presence at the 4, but is there any evidence that he actually has what it takes -- in a 5-on-5 setting, not based on measurables, athleticism, or potential -- to reliably do this?

No. But that's the same as any first year player (which Samson essentially is). Hurley thought he was good enough to start at the 4 to start the season though so I think thats a good sign at least

wait, wait, wait. hoad up... am i to understand that there is a mechanism here where a posters' thoughts can be blocked by another when that poster is signed on? seriously? so, what aboot when they're not signed on? do the deployers think that their drivel will not be seen? hokey smokes, that's whacked. the 'tool' is not the issue, that's management's bitness. using it is the matter. lame squared
speaking of tools and lamo squared,
'Johnson is an entirely different player than either of them. Freak athlete who can guard just about anyone if his BBIQ is improved.'
umm, no. this 'freak' label often used here is never correct ('sid's a freak! ajax is a freak! and now we have 'samson's a freak!' oh, brother...)
hey! formula 409! this is a freak

and now, the NBA is going full on freak mode to closely watch for teams tanking hard in an attempt to land him.
'Around 200 NBA team representatives and more than 70 media outlets were on hand for the teenager’s first ever match on US soil'

'The four-time NBA champion repaid the compliment, calling him a “generational talent”.
“No-one has ever seen anyone as tall as he is but as fluid and as graceful as he is out on the floor,” James said on Wednesday.
“I mean at 7 foot-4 or 7 foot-5 or 7 foot-3, whatever the case may be, his ability to put the ball on the floor, shoot step-back jumpers out of the post, step-back threes, catch-and-shoot threes, block shots.”

7'4 or 7'5, eight foot wingspan, shoots 3's as well as anyone... 18 years young.
now, that's a freak.

This makes no sense. Tells me you know nothing about him. He can shoot from outside and finish around the rim. It's not an issue. Senior year in HS he shot 67% and 37% from 3.

he got 'cuffed.'
and now, for the nonplaying, clueless, analysts here, a teaching moment.
'cuff.' the cuff is one of the most rare plays in the game, more an accident than a plan, but some superstars are able to do it more often.
at 1:30 in the vid, guy goes flying to the rim, but mr special blocks it clean in a way that sends the shooter crashing to the floor. here, the announcer sez 'oooh!' and everyone goes 'dang!'
it lifts the team's spirit, and scares the pants off the opponents.
ie, 'u got served. don't do that again.'

I’m not convinced he can stay on the floor defensively. He’s played 22 minutes v. P6 teams in his career and is on pace to commit a foul 3x a minute. He’ll bring a quick, lengthy defensive switch look for a few minutes, I think that is all we should expect from him.

I’ll take anything Karaban provides offensively first.

So still a ? BBIQ on defense (only Hurley knows about this) and very limited offensively. We also don't know if he is even near playing condition. Couldn't we just use Springs for 5-8 mins? Hard to believe he couldn't help us against some of the more physical teams (nearly everyone compared to us)?

?????????????????????????????????

High school was a long time ago . Take those stats with a grain of salt. He’s barely sniffed the floor for us. I’d love to be wrong but I just think he’s missed too much time this year to be expected to be more of a net+ than AK.

Dan Hurley’s first year here where he didn’t really play Whaley till the last game, admitted he should have tried to find him minutes, then IW broke out the following season has really put unfair expectations on any big who sits the bench.

By all accounts Richie is a great kid who has been loyal to the program in a way many would never. Always (outside looking in) seems to have a good attitude. Dan has seen him now for 4 years straight. If he thought he was an upgrade over what we play for 5-8 a game. I think we would have seen it by now.
