Today's fun fact (and if posted elsewhere, apologies). And it's an important overlap, as when UConn goes on tournament runs from season to season, it provides the continuity for each successive team to build upon.

"If Bueckers stayed healthy and played the standard four years at UConn before heading off to the WNBA, she never would’ve overlapped with Sarah Strong. Instead, Bueckers came back for a fifth season, teamed up with the freshman phenom and led the Huskies to their 12th national title."

You are probably correct. But Paige still had the Covid year and could have come back for her 5th season regardless of the injury. In fact, she could come back for a 6th season if she was so inclined.

I thought Dawn Staley hurt her team by her cursing and general attitude during the game. Those F-bombs must have been both embarrassing and demoralizing for her players. Not that there was anything much she could have changed to bring about a different outcome, but at least she could have demonstrated more positive encouragement.

I feel like it could be Ashlynn, but we've got a lot of talented players on the team and some pretty special ones coming in.
Ice, Ash, KK and Q will all be juniors and their basketball skills and roles on the team are well defined and probably will not change significantly next year. I expect the starters in October to be Sarah at the 4, Jana at the 5 and Azzi at the 2, leaving openings at the 1 and the 3. KK will most likely start the season at the 1 while Kelis is being evaluated, leaving the 3 as the question mark, possibly being filled by Carol or Morgan (if healthy) until Blanca can be evaluated.

This team went from “normal contender” (like Taurasi’s last team) to 2015-2016 level dominance really quickly. That Tennessee loss was a godsend. Hell of a turnaround.
I try not to compare UConn teams because it is difficult to do so. However, I do believe that this year's Huskies perhaps had the most difficult path to their championship than any other UConn team. It was murder's row to get there--three No, 1 seeds,, beating UCLA and SC by wide margins, teams that in any other seasons could have won the championship--I won't say they are the greatest UConn team ever, and but they beat the toughest teams ever to win the Naty...

It's on-topic from my point of view. I love how UConn has already backed up their fall 2023 "Basketball Capital of the World" self-label with additional men's and women's titles. Awesome. Great for the programs and the school rep. We need to stay on top right now. Maybe we'll have another dual championship next season... who knows?
Just to be very clear, this is not a self label. This was something Dick Vitale said all of the way back in 1995. (!!!) All we've done is taken that label and provided 18 pieces of hardware to back it up.

Dawn ALWAYS drops a lot of f-bombs. She’s led the Gamecocks to three natties doing it. They just ran into a buzz saw, working blue had nothing to do with it.

I just took a peek at the reactions at the Lady Vols forum. Lots of posts how they would have knocked off UConn again if they met in the tournament.
We slayed the top team in the SEC (twice) they need to concentrate on trying to win their conference first. It must've really hurt losing to Shea not once but twice, no way they would've came close to beating the UConn team tht played yesterday....Ask Dawn.

Well, UConn did go and print it on their home court floor. If that's not a self-label, it's an adoption of a superlative from a guy who rattles off effusive praise like it's carbon dioxide. Either way, UConn talked the talk, and then walked the walk to back it up.

I just like to remind folks that someone else said it because it was so long ago and too many casual fans (especially non-UConn fans) misinterpret the intention by repeating it. Just like how we've latched onto calling MSG "Storrs South" - that's not UConn that coined that, but we sure as heck will commandeer the slogan!

I'm not so sure about that. There have been a lot of players over the years who have improved after their sophomore seasons. Their rules this year may have been a consequence of other available personnel, rather than any specific limitations they have. But we shall see.

As noted in my signature, Jay Billis said it as well. So, I think it's less a "self label" than it is an acknowledgment of a widely acknowledged fact. Name me another school who has 18 national championships in the last 30 years.

....and a bit of class!

18 out of 58 chances... Capital performances!
