Wasabi Fenway Bowl Game Post Game

Guys these types of bowls are becoming the equivalent of the Pro Bowl. It's an exhibition that is more risk than reward for players. You can't blame guys for not playing considering how dangerous the sport is. You just have to enjoy it for what it is. And if you don't enjoy that then don't pay attention. The days of caring about winning a bowl game that isn't a playoff game are over. Without major changes to the structure of the sport, 70% of these bowls won't exist in 5-10 years.

It does not make this better so screw over guys who won't play in the nfl or who may have a shot at the nfl and screw over the band, so a personal decision should be the majority decision?

Absolutely. If our best players don't want to play, than the entire team doesn't get to play. Maybe for once the schools should take some power back in this "new world of college football" Take control of your brand and name from these spoiled 6 figure earning players.

If you take out pop tarts, the most viral tweet going around from college football today is that UConn's QB sat out the game while Army's QB played with a 101 temperature. That's the introduction that many got of the 2025 UConn football team today. Quitters. We would have been better off ending the season after the win over FAU.

You're spot on re: the conference issue. Every damn day it needs to be front and center for DB et al. As for the kids, I grant them wide berth. How they handle the portal, their futures etc is intensely personal and I hope they do the best for themselves and their family. There are many kids who have limited options and opportunities. So with coach gone and interim coach probably catching a flight to Texas tonight and QB in NFL showcase mode, what did we expect?

This is especially true when Army remained essentially intact from the season because - well they are in the Army! No confusion to deal with at any level! Must be nice!

All in all, let's not detract from a successful and fun season. If you do suffer a bout of the winter doldrums, just fire up highlights of the Duke or BC game. You'll immediately feel better!
If you don't think getting into a power conference has been front and center since day one of Dave's tenure then you aren't paying attention. There's nothing we can do about it.

It was a competitive game where our best players made a choice to not participate.
Our? The season was over a month ago. They aren't returning.

Today was a one-off exhibition game. Programs that are turning the page to a new season with the same coaches get more buy-in than programs in transition (like UConn).

Asking our former players to participate today is akin to wager in which if they lose they forfeit their house and career and if they win they get a hardy handshake and a thank you. It is absurd to ask someone to take on such a wager for your transitory vicarious enjoyment.

Don't care if it's front and center. Get it done. No excuses now because as you said the bowl system won't exist soon. We will need something to play for soon and we clearly can't trust it will be a bowl. And if the bowls do exist, we clearly can't trust our players will want to play in it.

And I'll also be clear seeing you said it. I don't enjoy UConn football resembling UMass football in front of a national tv audience. And that should be prevented at all costs from repeating itself going forward.

They'll figure out the postseason.... it probably ends up similar to the Players Era tournament as a solution. Each bowl (or some NIT-esque tournament) puts up some level of NIL for each participant, plus a bonus pool for the players on the winning team... if you're not on the bowl roster, you don't get paid. Some guys still won't care, but more likely will and you further incentivize the effort by dangling the carrot of more money if you win. For years the bowls were able to dangle swag bags to incentivize the players to participate... now there is enough money out there that a few hundred dollars of merchandise isn't going to move the needle.

How would he "get it done"

You think he just asks very nicely?

We cant force a conference to take us. I suppose you can pull an SMU and play the long game waiting on TV revenue just to get on to a life raft- but even then you need votes to get in.

The decision to have Bell run that trick play looked pre planned and selfish. I'm not saying Skyler Bell is selfish but I felt that decision took away from Farrar's moment. You either play or you don't. Not to mention it was right after a 6 yard Rosa run.

I know it wouldn't have made a difference and yes we did take a 7-0 lead which we got a bit lucky on that 4th and 1 stop. The mentality instead of telling our guys we're gonna be in a battle with Army instead the message was we have to cater to Skyler Bell who only played as a gimmick.
For God sakes, this. You should play, but if you don’t want to play don’t play. Show up in street clothes and root for your teammates. But in a battle that was always going to be uphill for your teammates, we waste practice time and the first series of the game on a stupid gimmick play to give a star the exit he wants? The wrong choice for Bell, and gutless by Sammis for allowing it. Absolutely gutless and you’ll never convince me if he didn’t already have another job for his exit it would have happened.

More tomorrow but the bottom line is our only chance of winning with that roster was running it down their throat and keeping our D off the field as much as possible, and Cam Edwards had a mere 11 carries despite great success. While we’re wasting time giving players who dont want to play curtain calls.

Just unthawing. The D was completely blown off the line and dominated. Rosa was an utter disaster. Our 4th string QB played like it. Should have just let Cam run all day. What a waste of money and time. Never again.

I note that you joined the Boneyard this year and have 245 posts. The Conference Realignment Board was started 14 years ago. Some of us have lived and died (had our hopes die) on that board for 14 years. Get a grip.

It was only in the last month that we were told the bowl means nothing which is an admission our football program plays for nothing as of right now. That will need to change ASAP if you want fans to support the program.

There’s really nothing to discuss with the game because it wasn’t a game and the result was baked in the cake a month ago. A tragic ending to a great season. It should have never happened.

UConn never never never ever again should participate in a bowl game if our players do not want to go. Players made personal choices to put us in a position where we couldn’t win this game. And sorry this is competition. It’s about winning and losing. If we don’t want to compete. Don’t show up. And how is it that our program, in the precarious state it is in as an independent, thinks it’s too good for a bowl? Including a backup qb who fleeced Mike Burton out of 6 figures. Too good to showcase the best of the program on a Saturday on ESPN? Likely the biggest audience that saw us all year. We don’t play for a conference championship. So what are we playing for? What are the fans supposed to be invested in? Well I hope for starters we start holding UConn’s feet to the fire about getting into either the ACC or Big 12. I mean things are clearly going well for us as we feel comfortable enough to forfeit a bowl game and get worked by Army for 3 and half hours on ESPN. If the bowl doesn’t matter, something better for the fans to justify the support. Only getting us into a power 4 conference does so that should be the minimum expectation of the administration going forward. And no excuses on it this time.

Well let’s forget the fans for a second because we know us poor saps are not the focus during these times. How about what we did to our players?

Skyler Bell was trotted out to tell us he was playing and was trying to get others in the portal to play. Wall him! A hero! People wanted to build a statute for him over this news. The new Locked On UConn host gushed “this means UConn is going all in for win #10.” Well, That was never the case. Bell played one series and took his pads off. Was it done to rube fans to pay for tickets or throw off the opponent? Regardless, It was deceitful and he looks bad because of it.

Because of Bell’s warrior like decision to tell us he was playing (not true) Joe Fagano got smeared online (still going on today) as the sole quitter for 2 weeks while Bell got the statue built for him. He abandoned the team! I’m so mad at Joe! Turns out they both quit. Joe was just more up front about it.

The Candle era begins today and all will be forgotten with news of new hires and recruits. But it’s gonna be hard to forget about some of the selfishness and lies of the last month that robbed the fanbase from a proper send off for this worthy team. The fans and the team deserved better. It did not have to end this poorly.
Excited Well Done GIF

A bonus for the meaningless crowd is I got to watch us get stomped in the halftime highlights of all the following games tonight.

McDonald was listed as available.
Should’ve played him then, why not?
Evers ghosted us apparently. Sammis kept a lid on everything for bowl practices and info/intel. So we got Farrar in a bowl game who may or may not end up being good, was functional today, but c’mon…..Folks feel duped

Does your definition of functional = not good?

There are things and we are doing them. It's not in our control though.

Isn't that equation the same for every college sport though? Should we abolish them all?

If this is what bowls have become, just an exhibition game for players/coaches to opt out, then fans across the nation should all ban together and refuse to spend our time and money at them. This bowl system needs to die and something better needs to take its place.

Now, this game - and the season - is over. I'm looking forward to next year. That said, if people who opted-out on the game, why should Coach Candle let them back? Is Tucker in the portal, is that why he didn't play? The QB who played today seems like he was in over his head. It wasn't his fault, it was his first snaps of the year. I thought he was ok with the limited time he had learning.

I heard he is in the portal, so next year, we might have a totally different team. I was in the chat, but I'm was on an island in Tampa Bay.

I believe the bowl games will be gone in about 5 to 10 years...
