Villanova post game thread

Part of Reed's issue is he is foul trouble a lot due to not playing good D. he had been in foul trouble 9 of the last 10 games before today. Hurley has to balance playing with him and foul trouble to either center. Hopefully he can be more consistent and not pick up stupid fouls in the first half.
He does foul too much and he's had some brutal calls go against him recently, he also gets lost too much on defense but the good and the things he provides that nobody else on the roster provides far outweighs the bad. Last game was inexplicable. Seton Hall has no bigs and Reed had no fouls, Hurley just decided I'm not playing him today unless I'm forced to. And when Hurley does play him there has been very little emphasis on getting him the ball.

Well just saying in defense to Hurley some of the issues have been handd to him by Reed's fouls. Either way when he is in there we need to feed the beast and not fall in love with the 3 pt line.

Good game for Reed but let's not forget that this game was not called tight and he still had 3 fouls but he played 27 minutes.

Ugly-arse win…but we’ll take it!

All of you on the Tarris Stan train are hilarious. We have a 26-game sample to show that he’s just as likely to be a complete non-factor next game as he is to play like he did tonight. It is what it is. He was a crucial part for us getting a win we absolutely didn’t deserve tonight…we’ll take it but let’s see what happens next game. I’d love for him to stack great games the rest of the way, but won’t be surprised if brings a clunker to MSG.

JStew once again showed why he gets limited minutes. Came in and made an immediate horrible turnover.

Alex might as well have kept his warmup gear on. Mahaney was a disaster. Ross, too.

I’m honestly still in shock that we won this game.
Other than that, how was the play Mrs. Lincoln?

There is a little bit of bologna in all this. Hurley rides Samson out of comfort, a lot. Go tell Tarris you’re our guy, we’re going to ride you and see how he responds. Not, oh you goofed up backup, now you get to catch splinters for 36 minutes.

It’s at a point where you pull out all stops, ride the guy that has the highest upside to advance. Not settle for the handless pogo stick that’s still trying to figure out how to rebound as a senior.

Maybe if you’re amazing all over the floor in other areas and you have a highly refined offense that just needs the 5 to do their part. Like last year when Samson came in. We are not that - we need real productivity and a threat out of our 5.

Sounds like you tapped a new home-made double IPA tonight.

AK did have 4 rebounds and 4 assists. Only Ball with 6 had more assists. But AK did have two brutal 3-point attempts which led to Nova increasing the lead in the first half after UConn had climbed back into the game.
The hate for AK in the chat and on here is ridiculous. He missed a couple of threes, fumbled a ball OOB and apparently didn't dive for a loose ball as hard as most posters apparently would.

He also has a habit of being in the right place for putbacks, got 4 assists, 4 rebounds, two blocks - one a momentum changer IMO - did not commit a TO and was otherwise good defensively.

He's not going to be the main scorer, or even #2. That's for Liam and Solo. AK is simply the glue for this thing to work.

Tale of 2 halves. This was Championship pedigree all the way.

Just need to keep winning and use those victories to build because this team is still under construction. Not ideal this time of season but winning accelerates the build faster and completion date is still a month away.

We do have the master carpenter!

Yea that post was a bit harsh, but it’s unfortunately the truth. And it is under the influence of a few IPAs.

I ride or die with my team though, even when I’m frustrated. I’m also not delusional at what we we are at this point in the season.

Was going to a movie so I turned it off at 16-6, we were looking B-A-D. Was checking score throughout the movie, we got close, then I saw down 14 in an instant and was bummed. Saw us clawing back and taking the lead. Man, we really don’t make it easy on ourselves.

Nobody's gonna miss him because he's gonna be the starting 4 at UConn

I’m still processing this possibility.

I don’t think our staff was planning for AK to be a part of next years roster. I’m not sure if it’s a good/bad thing at this point. And I’m not throwing shade at AK with that…it’s just that the recruiting and roster building was being done with the assumption that he’d be a Pro next year.

It is a position that’s a weak spot next year as currently constructed. Other than Stewart, who is more of a 3, we don’t have anyone to play the 4 - unless Reibe can sort of be one alongside Reed. It’s a portal need if AK leaves.

Finally Coach Dan kept Samson, Ross and Mahaney on the bench during the last 8 minutes. Hopefully Coach learned something tonite: specifically, start Reed from here on out.

That beast rebound and put back by Stewart may have been the punch in the face this team needed. That was a grown man rebound and every person on the team responded.

I went from we may not make the tournament to locking in another UConn natty bet at +8000, after that play.

I’m a big Reed guy and have been advocating for more of him but don’t the advanced metrics say most of our best lineups are with Johnson? @auror maybe you can weigh in?

I just wonder if the staff sees something we don’t because Reed is that dude!
When teams are switching heavily, Reed becomes the much better option (see tonight, Memphis game, St. John's, I believe DePaul as well). He can punish a switch/mismatch much better than Samson. And in switching games, our flowing offense grinds down. When our offense is allowed to work without switching, Samson has the edge.

I said he's leaving and I said why.
Well don't be surprised he stays after this year to redeem himself. He gets a lot of Money from NIL and not sure it is a foregone conclusion he is going to the NBA next year.

He will be on a 2 way contract at best. Not sure that he is salivating on leaving for that.
Still see lots of mocks with him late first, which is mind bending. Not sure how an NBA team drafts a kid who’s primarily skill is 3 point shooting, and is on a 6-47 ripper. Top that off with form that heaves the ball on a rotational axis similar to earth. I guess he’s tall.

Don’t under estimate the significance of this win. That was the product of sheer will power overcoming the fear of losing. This might just reset the team’s mentality. Nothing more powerful than confidence.
So kinda like the Creighton win?
