Villanova Fires Kyle Neptune

I understand your point but disagree with using Shaka Smart as an example of someone who could win, as you say, "three nattys". It's a pet peeve just like Tex Schram with the Cowboys. The media kept hyping his draft choices from fifteen years before as the team was failing to make the playoffs. Shaka seems similar.

He's a gentleman, seems to recruit nice kids who seem to love him, but his success the last two years was based on the play of two kids he didn't recruit: Kolek and Ighodaro.

And, if you look at his performance at VCU, Texas and Marquette a pattern seems to emerge. He does better early, possibly an indication he can manage a roster but doesn't recruit well or recruit the right players.

He got to the Final Four his first year at VCU then tailed off. Texas was a disaster as he was one and done the three times he made the tournament and didn't make it his other three years.

While his trend is good at Marquette, I could argue the team improved as Kolek and Ighodaro improved. Now they're gone and he's losing Jones, Mitchell and Joplin. I don't see them going far this year and next year could be a downer.

After the FF:
2012 VCU--Round of 32
2013 VCU--Round of 32
2014 VCU--One and done
2015 VCU--One and done
2016 Texas--One and done
2018 Texas--One and done
2021 Texas--One and done
2022 Marquette--One and done
2023 Marquette--Round of 32
2024 Marquette--Sweet Sixteen

The point is it's a hypothetical and we have no idea what could have happened. Do you understand how a thought experiment works?

All you posted is irrelevant. I just used Shaka's name because it was said around here a lot at the time.

On a siriass note, i do have a colleague - nova grad who has friends in the nova athletic department and he told me that Neptune was not Wright’s first choice.
This has been a common perception since the hire.

Baker Dunleavy, .480ish head coaching record with Quinnipiac, another enticing choice. /s

Alterique Gilbert was a McDonald's all American, still got Daniel Hamilton, and Purvis to transfer, he was still getting talent, of course not at the level if we were still in the BE. It was a hell hole of a conference and Ollie fell off both things can be true.

A hell hole of a conference got a #1 seed this year. I still do not believe the issue was the conference. It was the head coach.

I just don’t understand the interest in this Neptune thread with 8K views. It’s Novafor Chrissakes.

So Calhoun is responsible for what Ollie did years later? Hey at least we can say we won a title with a failed coach.
Failed coach? Last I checked Ollie had multiple NCAA tournament appearances, a NCAA National Title and an overall winning record as a head coach. The last 2 years of his tenure were difficult for a number of reasons. This doesn't include his record as a player and Assistant Coach for the Huskies.

"Novafor Chrissakes"

With better timing, this could have been your "Fort the Ead" moment. Instead, it might be a good time to close the thread.

Why? All the side matters that provide answers to your wondering about "Why 8k views?" will show up again in subsequent threads as they re-invigorate interest.

So true.

I don't know why Collins is a viable candidate for Villanova?

He's been a .500 coach for his career.

Yes, I understand it's Northwestern but consider we're talking about the B10 (overrated conference).

He's been there 11 years, and you would think somebody would have poached him by now,

Odom is a much better candidate.
Northwestern suffers the same challenges as Vanderbilt, Rice, now Georgetown and even Stanford. Kids have to cut it academically. I like Collins.

Isn't Stanford the school that has to have you admitted before you can get a scholarship? I don't think the other schools you mentioned are as stringent with their academic requirements for athletes.

Well they’re the clear 2nd best program in the conference so it would kinda help if they didn’t miss the tournament every year.

I have a client who was a pretty prominent Stanford football player. Nice guy but there is a sub-zero chance his application would have gotten even ten seconds of attention if he wasn’t a highly sought after football player.

As far as Georgetown goes, good lord.

John Elway has never struck me as a smart person.

Maybe different for women’s basketball but Diana Taurasi said she wanted to go there but couldn't get in. Thankfully!
