The thing that kills me about people making fun of soccer (like Jim Rome) is that these same people will want to talk to you about golf or NASCAR or even, hell, tennis!

Tennis is pretty exciting. Especially women's tennis.

The funny thing is that there are still people who think its funny to make fun of soccer, but the truth is they just seem out of touch now.

I played football and soccer growing up. But now that I'm out there with my kids, it's a different world. I'm practicing all sorts of footwork with them that I never learned in 6 years of soccer as a kid (ages 10-16). It's totally different. MLS has ramped up the level of play to a very high standard. Our club teams in WNY are even sponsored by MLS teams, and they almost never scrimmage. It's drills, drills, drills, drills. We used to run up and down the field just frickin' kicking the ball. Things are totally different now.

They get a lot of fans for the Rhinos, but I don't think they ever had a good stadium plan in place. The new stadium is small, and it was built by the WNY sausage king whose daughter is a pro in the women's league. It's a nice stadium for the Rhino's, but very small. People travel up to watch Toronto all the time (I'm in Buffalo now).

I lived in Italy for two years in the 1980s when AC Milan had all those Dutch players like Gullit, Davids and Van Basten, so I became a big fan, especially since everyone around me liked Juventus (the Dallas Cowboys of Europe). I have to say, politics are so involved in Euro soccer, and while the backing of this team--with its quasi fascist Northern League and Silvio Berlusconi makes me retch--I have a hard time pulling myself away from watching them.

Soccer got its named in England in the 1800s. The words Association Football were used to distinguish the sport from Rugby Football. Then they shortened it to Assoc Football, and then they just started calling it Soccer. As the sport became more popular elsewhere in Europe, the Brits just adopted the name that everyone else used: football.

I agree that quality is important to the.viewing experience. Watching two squads play pinball across the pitch isn't very entertaining. I'll usually have the BPL on Saturday and Sunday mornings. Beats the heck out of FB and BB pregame shows.

I know what you're saying. I never cared for it and my best friend in HS was an all-conference player. I learned to like it at UConn. First day of classes my freshman year, my senior roommate told me that after class we're going to the soccer game. I hemmed and hawwed and he said "We're going." I went and when we got there his buddy had a keg ready in the stands and a sleeve of red cups. Hooray Soccer!

What went down in Rochester that screwed their chance for an MLS team? I know they were mentioned as a possible expansion location, but was there serious interest from the league. This all took place long before the plan to build smaller, soccer specific stadiums.

My friend and former UCONN captain played for the CT Wolves when they were A-League. The Rochester road trip was the whole team's favorite game of the year ... best attended game in the league by far ... 20k fans in Frontier Field for almost every game. I don't think the Wolves drew that many fans over the course of the entire season.

This game was an example of why teams competing for a champions league spot next year often play reserves in the Europa League this year. The team has to be spent for the weekend after playing 120. Oh, and now there are 2 more games to play, if not 5!
