I watched a bit of this. I didn't see Wilson and both teams seemed to be having a hard time getting started.

This game helps to appreciate how sharp UCONN was last night. And how well UC-Davis played.

Rather inauspicious start for the Gamecocks. Strange starting lineup (A'ja Wilson at the shooting guard) which Dawn abandoned after early turnovers. So Carolina turned the ball over 12 times which is what has kept poor-shooting USC in the game. Coates has been So Carolina's best player so far. Wilson pulled early and then returned playing in the post though not particularly effective there either.

Not a good sign for South Carolina at all. The Trojans were 22-13 last year and lost their 2 main scorers Crook and Harberts from last season and aren't even ranked. For SC to be in such a dog fight reminds me of all the unranked teams they faced last season and only won by single digits.

I assume SC will figure it out and pull away from USC in the 2nd half, but if their fans think they are threats to win a NC, this is a game they should win by 30.

So will everyone else. UCONN has 4 freshmen and 1 sophomore to integrate into the lineup and 2 new starters in Chong and Stokes. My point was that SC fans (and some UCONN fans - not you) went on and on about good SC would be because they brought back all 5 starters. They can't have it both ways.

On edit - 44-42 South Carolina is up in the 2nd half. Really unimpressive performance by the #3 team in the nation.

Agree- Southern Cal has some talented players, but for South Carolina, this hasn't been the pre-NC tour de force you see at times in the regular season.

Still can't wait for our game with them at Gampel in February. I've got my ticket...

Gamecocks with some nice 3-point shooting with about 5 minutes left in the game...otherwise this game was tight all the way. Alaina Coates looks pretty good...I wouldn't trade Nurse for Wilson based on this game.

Final 70-61. Much closer than S. Carolina expected, I think. Suspect Dawn will get the rough edges knocked off tho

Sure, South Carolina didn't look good tonight, but they won the game, which is really the goal for the first game of the season. I doubt that much insight can be gained on opening night because of the jitters that cannot be calmed by practice or exhibition game blowouts. Overreacting one way or the other seems unwarranted to me. How the Gamecocks develop over the season is far more important than how they looked tonight.
