Beers pushes Oklahoma above the second group for me. Talaysia might push Tennesse up too. She looks born for that offense.
Can't argue with that. Well, maybe a little. I'd keep Tennessee where they are. Maybe Auburn in the second tier, though? It's going to be a very intense conference schedule with some battles among the teams at the top and among those in the middle. I said it last year, and I'll say it again...somebody has to beat South Carolina before I'll believe it. I still think they're the best team in the country.

I enjoyed watching the freshmen (Joyce and Maddy) today--and I'll leave it at that.

Yeah they definitely phoned in this game. It was very apparent that they were not mentally there and just trying to play hard enough to get the dub and head out the door on Christmas break.

The lack of urgency from this team is concerning. I don't know if this group just isn't as motivated after winning last year, but so far we've seen:
-Michigan game: came out flat
-Dawn mentioned prior that players weren't as focused and seemed cocky, then they got blown out by UCLA as a result

It seemed like things turned a corner after the UCLA game, but I thought I saw something this week where Dawn mentioned players weren't happy with playing time which isn't great for a locker room, and then tonight to phone it in against an opponent like that is a sign that something's off or at least the focus isn't the same as it was a year prior.

I agree that something is off with this group this year but I'm not putting too much stock into this specific game. It's hard to compete your hardest when your 19 years old playing a noon game with an empty arena, hours away from Christmas vacation and facing inferior competition. Looking at some scores, I don't think South Carolina was the only team having this issue.

We’ll see how TN and OK handle SC, LSU, and TX. We might see some similarities in SEC WBB and SEC football… the best teams beating each other, to the overall detriment of the conference when it comes to the big dance seedings.

Biggest surprise for me? Feagin starting over Watkins. Makes me wonder… has Feagin improved that much? Is Dawn sending a message to Watkins by not starting her? Watkins is a much more physical presence than Kitts or Feagin, ignoring the dunks. I’d like Watkins to gain some weight to help her down low.
Also gotta wonder if the preseason incident that resulted in Watkins’ arrest isn’t still having some residual effects regarding team chemistry. Watkins’ suspension prior to the eventual outcome allowed Feagin an opportunity for increased time as part of the starting unit.
Read an article once about North Carolina’s legendary soccer coach Anson Dorrance, who for several years coached both the men’s and women’s teams. He said that team chemistry played almost no role with the men, but that it was a huge deal with the women.
We lost no one to the portal last time, but it seems that we should be prepared to lose some this next time. YMMV.

Are you a Gamecock fan? Dawn always gives the benefit of the doubt to seniors. BTW, Feagin was MVP of the FIBA 3x3 world cup last summer, so she's not chopped liver.

Yes, a fan and an alum… graduated 50 years ago tomorrow. I realize that Dawn prefers senior leadership, but I thought Watkins’ contributions last year, which were greater than Feagin’s, might earn Watkins more playing time and starts. I trust implicitly in our Coach. Glad that Feagin is having a bigger impact this year, and maybe she is outperforming Watkins in practice.

Nobody knows. She only played 8 minutes in the first half. Never entered in the second half. No report of injury or anything like that.

CK missed practice the day before. She appeared sluggish in the first quarter & quite winded after only a few minutes of play in the second quarter when she reentered the game . Despite not playing in the second half, she sat in the middle of the bench and was engaged / cheering her teammates. most likely, imo, she was feeling under the weather. That coupled with Joyce dominating at the 4 against an inferior opponent & the Christmas break starting, the coaches decided to hold her out.

I’m going to not worry at all about the game against Chas Southern. All the fretting about the South Florida game may not be warranted. They beat Duke yesterday.

I dont worry a whole lot about minutes right now. Dawn is using the games before conference play to get as many players as she can producing at a high level. Once conference play starts we will see who she trusts, but right now that is her goal.

Remember we lose Feagin, Hall, Pao Pao, Walker and possibly Raven and/or Ashlyn. Both will be eligible for the draft because of age/injury. We have signed one recruit. Dauda and Adhel need to improve a lot to contribute next year. There will be plenty of minutes to go aro'und next year and I’m sure Dawn has made them aware of that.

Keep something in perspective…UConn had 3 #1 players on the court last night and lost their 2nd game of the year. Dawn has only had 1 #1 players EVER (A’ja) and has lost 2 games in 2+ years. She has her way to do things and is very much in tune with what’s going on with her players.

lol I'm glad I'm not the only one thinking about next season before we even hit SEC play for this season.

With all that said, Dauda should be a good replacement for Feagin and Tac for Walker. McDowell will be a good replacement for Hall while backing up Tessa. Paopao is going to be the hardest player to replace. Pick up a guard from the portal to backup MiLaysia and I honestly think we'll be cooking as long as we don't lose Ashlynn and Raven to the draft (or any surprises transfers out of the program).

..and speaking of next year, does the ruling with Diego Pavia about JUCO eligibility mean that Sakima Walker has the option to come back next year?

Long story short for those not in the know, the quarterback at Vanderbilt, Diego Pavia, sued the NCAA for another two years of eligibility due to using up two years of eligibility in JUCO. I'm not a lawyer but my interpretation is that they are temporarily allowing one more year of eligibility to all seniors who would have ran out of eligibility at the end of this season AND have played at least one year in JUCO. I believe they made this injunction just in case they didn't give a verdict before Pavia runs out of eligibility. It seems like Sakima (and a few other Gamecocks like Cam Pringle and Bam Martin-Scott) would have the option to play one more season...

Not at the moment. I posted a Sports Yahoo article in another thread about the ruling and per their report, it only applies to Pavia right now.

I want to watch them play somebody good before I think they’ll be better than SC, Texas, LSU or Oklahoma. Right now they have better athletes than the people they are playing. Iowa is not as good as everybody wanted to think they were. Will be interesting for sure.

Lol better hope our hosts don’t wander in and find this. At this rate, it’ll be days before ESPN runs another ‘Is UConn the favorite? Many are saying!… ( it’s us. We are “Many”)’

I was really just trying to emphasize that Dawn does know what she’s doing with her player rotations. Wasn’t meant to say anything bad about the other one but yeah, I could see that getting the side-eye.

I agree with almost all of this, but I do think that Iowa may be as good as everyone expects them to be. They have a new PG and HC, so there will be a few growing pains. Also, Hannah Stuelke is not nearly as good as everyone thought she'd be because she's not a PF but must play there out of necessity (she's an undersized center who can't play her natural position because Addison O'Grady is better there for them).

So? How do we get Chloe Kitts to play better? IMO- not currently playing at her level of competency.

Part of me worries if this is a "square peg in a round hole" issue. I trust the staff and it is probably in her best interest to do what she is currently doing, but I also sometimes feel like we don't take advantage of her ability to shoot the 10 footer and instead she is posting up too much. We need to use her like Kiki Herbert Harrigan during her senior year.
