The USA Basketball Women’s National Team announced today the 18 players who will participate in a training camp set for Dec. 12-14 at Duke University in Durham, North Carolina.

I think this team will play in the 2026 World Cup, which many of the top veterans will skip. Stewie, Wilson, Pheesa and others will likely be back for the 2028 Olympics in LA.

I think this is more of a talent identification camp than anything. UCLA doesn't have a game in that stretch so Betts was able to get pulled in, same with Juju.

The W will be taking a break for the World Cup in September, and with USA Basketball being a little more serious, I think we see vets playing in it. Would not be a good luck to lose the World Cup to France going into the Olympics.

I think the top vets sit out for the American qualifiers in March, but we'll see what happens.

UConn plays USC on 12/13. I'd bet most US based college players wouldn't get selected for a camp that is most likely a talent evaluation event. There is plenty of time for the UConn players to get into camps.

From another perspective, Sarah is a generational talent, similar to Maya, Diana, and Stewie. She doesn't need to go to the camp right now.

very unusual to have a team representing the USA with only one UCONN player. At least the home grown Veronica Burton is on the list. The growth in her game the last couple of years has been remarkable.

I can’t tell you whether or not Sarah and Azzi were invited but I can say they have a game on the 13th. They can’t be in 2 places at once.

Perhaps the culture is changing. The NBA has been doing it for years. Not that the women should necessarily follow the men. But it would be hard to imagine the LA Olympics in 2028 without Wilson, Stewie, Pheesa & Sabrina to name a few.

Maybe someone on the BY will know. I seem to recall some crazy rule that excluded some top players from being on a 3-on-3 team. I believe it's the only Olympic sport with a rule like that. Countries have to qualify, but individual team members??? I suspect the rule was crafted so that the U.S. doesn't dominate the event.

These are just a couple of Shakespeare's reactions to the purposed 3X3 team. I share his sentiments. No one said everything better.

There are individual world rankings for 3x3 basketball as well as national rankings for individuals and a National Team must include a minimum of 50% (2 players) who are within the top 10 players in their national rankings - I they are trying to distinguish 3 x 3 as a distinct sport on the international level and not just have 5 x 5 players parachute in for the big competitions. The National individual rankings are based on the ten best tournament scores played by the individual during the past 12 months including national, regional, and worldwide tournaments.

I believe other sports have similar kinds of qualification requirements for individuals and teams based on their International federations.
