If the report of a blank check offer to Geno is true, that hints at why they think they could attract just about any coach. For Dawn ... OSU would definitely be a step up in prestige, and the timing was about right for a possible move. And got to believe they would have offered her a 10-20% raise (or more.) For Jeff, the prestige would not be as great a change but again, the check book and timing issues would be there.A program with great potential. And, at least at one point, was getting good attendance, although I gather that slipped.
I get that you need to "sniff" around, but I can't see why they thought Staley or Waltz might want the job - I think Staley is happy where she is and Waltz - can you say Yum Center?

The list of coaches who have said no to the Buckeyes is long. Sources say it includes the likes of Geno Auriemma of Connecticut, Dawn Staley of South Carolina, Gail Goestenkors formerly of Duke/Texas, Jeff Walz of Louisville, Kevin McGuff of Washington, Matthew Mitchell of Kentucky and JoAnne P. McCallie of Duke.
Hearing an Ohio coach is now the front runner for the Ohio State job ... If this goes on much longer they may offer me the job ...
I think they would be well-advised to look at a top assistant in his or her thirties who has the appetite to build up a program, rather than someone who is already established. Someone like Shea Ralph, perhaps.
My only thought is that FGCU is in one of the weakest conferences in WBB; perhaps that would be an extreme leap. They should look at the women's coach at FGCU -- FL Gulf Coast. He could bring Mel Thomas with him; and he is a very attractive person and excellent coach.
The new comment on twitter in reference to this is "wow, oh wow", so could be even more craziness to come.
Two finalist for#OhioState are Tricia@CoachCullop and Katie@MiamiWBB#LoveThemBoth#NEXT@womhoopsguru@wbballhoopscoop
But Mike Flynn followed up by just essentially repeating what was in the Dispatch article (see below), so there may not be any other unmentioned candidates. I would have thought OSU might be interested in Jim Jabir of Dayton, but there's been little talk of him.
Remember OSU thought throwing a blank check at Geno would be sufficient.
Jim may not be interested. He is very happy at UD and the University and community really support college basketball. He also had health problems (need to have a pacemaker implanted) early in his tenure at Dayton and they stood by him. He may not want the pressure of rebuilding another program.Good point, why hasn't his name received more discussion?

I do, too. They knew well Geno wouldn't come but it did set the table for the kind of first tier coaches they would be talking to.I still believe that was nothing more than PR.
