It is interesting. OSU fumbled the ball in putting Goestenkors 2nd in their search, or at least making it public. Probably not their intention, but oh well. And they make it sound like OSU is a program on par with Stanford, Duke, or UCONN. I don't think it is.

A program with great potential. And, at least at one point, was getting good attendance, although I gather that slipped.

I get that you need to "sniff" around, but I can't see why they thought Staley or Waltz might want the job - I think Staley is happy where she is and Waltz - can you say Yum Center?

Well written and very interesting details - have never been that impressed with GG as a coach but her recruiting at Duke was very good. And as far as OSU - in terms of money available and the prestige of the university, I think they have to be ranked in the top tier of coaching positions - results on the court may not rank the team that high, but that is the reason the position is vacant in the first place. Unless you are replacing a Pat/Geno/Tara on retirement, there aren't any 'better' positions.

If the report of a blank check offer to Geno is true, that hints at why they think they could attract just about any coach. For Dawn ... OSU would definitely be a step up in prestige, and the timing was about right for a possible move. And got to believe they would have offered her a 10-20% raise (or more.) For Jeff, the prestige would not be as great a change but again, the check book and timing issues would be there.

They should have just hired GG and been happy with that.

You are correct, see Ohio State section

They had 22,157 in an arena with 15,500 seats, and had to turn people away. However, to be fair, the bulk of the credit accrues to C. Viv and Iowa.

Latest from the Dispatch is that OSU is looking at Toledo's Tricia Cullop and Katie Meier of Miami (FL). There were rumors that Cullop was a candidate for the Michigan job last year, so it would be interesting (at least to me) if she ended up in Columbus. She just got a contract extension through 2021-22. Meier has Midwestern roots as she's a native of Wheaton, Illinois.

The Dispatch article claims quite a list of candidates saying "no thanks" to OSU:
The list of coaches who have said no to the Buckeyes is long. Sources say it includes the likes of Geno Auriemma of Connecticut, Dawn Staley of South Carolina, Gail Goestenkors formerly of Duke/Texas, Jeff Walz of Louisville, Kevin McGuff of Washington, Matthew Mitchell of Kentucky and JoAnne P. McCallie of Duke.

EDIT: Cullop may be the front-runner, according to a tweet from Kenny Kallina:
Hearing an Ohio coach is now the front runner for the Ohio State job ... If this goes on much longer they may offer me the job ...

I think they would be well-advised to look at a top assistant in his or her thirties who has the appetite to build up a program, rather than someone who is already established. Someone like Shea Ralph, perhaps.

They should look at the women's coach at FGCU -- FL Gulf Coast. He could bring Mel Thomas with him; and he is a very attractive person and excellent coach.

My only thought is that FGCU is in one of the weakest conferences in WBB; perhaps that would be an extreme leap.

The new comment on twitter in reference tothis is "wow, oh wow", so could be even more craziness to come.

How the mighty have fallen. They completely screwed up their hiring process. Alienated the best available coaches and are now looking second tier. Who is out in control out there.

This apparent complete confusion "at the top" at Ohio State might possibly give a glimpse into why Foster was never able to get to top tier status. I have ZERO information other than observing his record and the performance of his teams the few times I saw them play, but the confusion does make me wonder. Did they ever support him/WBB or did they interfere (even in the spirit of "helping")?

But Mike Flynn followed up by just essentially repeating what was in the Dispatch article (see below), so there may not be any other unmentioned candidates. I would have thought OSU might be interested in Jim Jabir of Dayton, but there's been little talk of him.

Remember OSU thought throwing a blank check at Geno would be sufficient.

Good point, why hasn't his name received more discussion?

Would be a good move for Katie Meier. With NC recruiting plus addition of ND, Miami is distant fifth at best in ACC. Could be worse, with Syracuse, fla st, and even ga tech challenging.

Jim may not be interested. He is very happy at UD and the University and community really support college basketball. He also had health problems (need to have a pacemaker implanted) early in his tenure at Dayton and they stood by him. He may not want the pressure of rebuilding another program.

Thanks for the info, didn't know about the health.

I guess it won't be Cullop; she tweeted this about an hour ago: "To end all speculation...I am a Rocket!"
