Linda Perry (RIP) of 4 Non Blondes - What's Up - Not only was the singer, she was also the writer.

She also wrote music, "Beautiful" by Christina Aguilera, "Get the Party Started" by Pink, "What You Waiting For" by Gwen Stefani, "Superwoman" by Alicia Keys, "Can't Let Go" by Adele and others

Julieta Venegas. I continue to listen to her music over a decade after discovering her catalogue. It's in Spanish, though. You don't hear much about her in the US.

I also maintain that Tori Amos continues to be ridiculously underrated, though most people have heard of her. Also Linda Rondstadt. And I second the person above who mentioned Regina Spektor.

I've always liked the lead singer from STEPS Claire Richards. Here she is singing "One for Sorrow"

Goin' back a ways on this one, but I've got Louis in the player now and I repeated this one a couple of times. This was Louis's first hit. The singer is a woman named May Alix. Her voice and delivery were absolutely amazing. Never heard anything else like it.

I can't let the wonderful Flora Purim go unnoticed.

"Open Your Eyes, You Can Fly" - great tune, lots of FM play back in the day:

Olivia Newton John was a singer whose talent kind of got lost with the popularity of Grease and her foray into disco pop. One of my favorite recordings was her cover of George Harrison's "If Not for You."

Patti Austin - she did some great stuff back in the 70's and 80's:

It wouldn't be surprising if one hasn't heard of Sissel Kyrkjebo from Norway, but she has to have one of the most vibrant voices anywhere. This is a great rendition of Shenandoah.

Saw her as art of a Bushbell show.

It's nice to see that others have heard of and like Sissel. Here is another truly beautiful song that gives one goose bumps. I also recommend "Going Home" if you like this one.
