UMES Post Game Thread

Was at the game tonight and think everyone needs to relax. No Karaban to calm the offense down. Stewie plays jaylen brown style offense but is a sieve defensively. Double screens and off ball screens to get the shooter open were great today. Defense is still a work in progress but I’ll take the positives today for sure

Can you be unimpressed by a 50+ point win? We went almost seven minutes in the first half without scoring and missed something like nine straight threes. McNeeley’s shooting isnt as advertised so far. Diarra with dumb fouls. Reed was a beast, but against poor competition. Honestly the only I took away from this was Abraham needs more minutes.

We have a potential star in Stewart
I’m not sure how we get him 28-30 minutes

Ross also showed that he can be an all around Swiss Army knife
We looked more athletic and diverse

Nice to see Ross hit a couple of threes. His energy reminds me of Jackson. Now he needs to turn activity into accomplishment.

10-10 and three is a great line. If he can come close to those numbers, we are a lot better.

Ross looked a little calmer tonight. All season he's just looked like he's in a rush with everything he does. Eventually the game will slow down for him and he will start to make a bigger impact.

Guy on TNT said scary news from the game today with Alex Karaban banging his head with 2 minutes left in the game and being rushed to the hospital.

Abraham got called for some weird “fouls” but honestly he looked better than Ball and Mahaney. Very disappointing Ball can’t positively impact the game outside of hitting open 3s (which is valuable - a lot of college players brick 3s whether they’re open or not).
Refs do that sometimes. They see a player come in they haven’t seen before and start calling fouls on him. It’s annoying

Not nearly as twitchy the athlete.

And no clue as to the Dan devotion to SJ other than possible blackmail.

Mahaney looked improved. Ball and Ross still lost on defense, not good.
Maybe we watched different games but Mahaney was still bad on D besides a couple deflections and Ross was pretty good and was very active on D. I do agree on Ball. LOL! I did like that Mahney was attacking the basket.

Maybe SJ wanted to transfer after 1st year and Dan convinced him not to go. Hence the loyalty.....

Stewart needs to see more time! He is one of the few players who can create his own offense and he plays pretty good D as well as rebounds. It is criminal the small amount of minutes he is getting presently especially in the Memphis game were he was 1 of 2 of our best players that game.

The game was scheduled and had to be played but was an embarrassment to all. There is not one positive statistic from this game that can be extrapolated with any confidence. We go into the Baylor game with the same starting lineup that came out of Maui, although probably without Karaban and with Liam's 3-point funk continuing and deepening.
I’m glad this game was scheduled and played. We needed this tune up game to put Maui behind us and to get the funk out of the players minds and work on things before playing Baylor.
FT shooting was a positive, the play of Stewart,Ross and Reed were positives. Yes we played an inferior team but games like this can be confidence boosters for players.
This team has a lot of talent and we know how good the staff is at making adjustments so I’m looking forward to the Baylor game and getting a statement win. I would also think Karaban would be cleared to play by then.

Despite the score, I don’t think we played very well. Being at the game, everything still just looks a bit chaotic out there.

Tarris needs to start.
We played a lot better 2nd half. It looked a lot smoother on TV especially the fast breaking. The first half though was brutal.

Ross had a very nice game. Weak competition, but he filled the stat sheet, and can play some D.
Ross got smoked on defense several times. His athleticism and teammates bailed him out more than once. He can’t just rely on one or two highlight reel plays per game.

I don’t think McNeeley is 100% yet. He grabbed at his hip a couple of times.

I wasn't able to watch but was able to listen to most of the game. I think Seth Greenberg said we started the season with four exhibition games, and I guess this was the fifth and final. Sure it was nice to get a win but against a 360 Ken Pom team I don't think it means much. I actually wonder how much these games help the team versus hurt them. You play what looks like great defense by holding a team to scoring in the 40's or 50's or whatever, until you play much better teams and realize the defense that was effective for 4 or 5 games is a step or two too slow.
Why 5 buy games??? I hope they don't plan on doing this again next season.

Anyway, this game aside, I think there is some encouragement in that despite all the negatives in the games against Memphis and Colorado, they lost by a total of 3 points. Clearly, against Dayton they appeared somewhat demoralized and I think just plain mentally and physically tired.

I believe Wednesday this team will have flushed out everything from the Maui trip and even this game, and will hopefully be reset and laser focused, and possessing that winning mentality. I would say they need to play to their identity, which was one of Hurley's mantras over the past couple of seasons, but I think they've not quite determined what their identity is.

Was the XL Center floor totally full of dust or condensation tonight?

I don’t think I’ve ever seen the players cleaning off their shoes as much as I witnessed tonight. Also, the floor sweepers were running the whole length of the court during every break.

If Abraham fouls like he did tonight, not many more minutes are available to him.

I'd hold off on that take. What were your expectations for him? Before today's game he was 13-32 (40.6%) from three. Tonight was a very bad shooting night for him. But he'll be fine. I promise.
I just expect him to make the open ones. He really hasn’t done that consistently. Mind you, we don’t come back against Memphis without him. But he missed a lot of shots today I am used to our shooters making.
