UMass Lowell Post Game Thread

People were right to be concerned on Monday. UConn didn’t play like this on Monday. People didn’t know if this team was capable of playing like this. I know Lowell an inferior team but UConn didn’t play this well in any game all last season. That is what people wanted to see.
Yes. And if you listened to Hurley on Thursday he was still ticked off about New Haven. Last night was what a Top 10 team should do to a team ranked in the bottom third of D1. And they did. Now we need to play that way on a regular basis.

Of course Reed made a difference. Worrisome thing is after having a lot of depth at the 5 over the last 3 years, we look to have none this year. So that will be something to watch.

I've seen enough. Based on this game alone I have decided the undefeated season is here.

By Christmas we will have the good fortune to know how solid and multidimensional the team is going forward. My question is do you think the team has the ability to be ranked in the top 10 defensively? We will certainly see if this is a reach after we play BYU, FLA, ARZ, ILL KAN, TEX. Don’t get me wrong the team warrants it’s current ranking, but to come close to bullet point in March can we stop teams when we need to

Hurley playing starters up 60 at 9 minute mark was a sin of pride.
Completely disagree. He's focused on getting the team playing at a "a championship level". Slaughtering poor Umass Lowell does absolutely nothing for Hurley personally. He's teaching intensity, focus and unrelenting competitiveness.

Great early-season self-awareness, form, and skill in covering his lips. May we all draw inspiration.

A strange marker of greatness is when you begin to assess a group and forget meaningful factors-

When I list the embarrassment of talent in WUTang I often forget that GZA and Deck were members. That's how good that unit was.
When I talk about the women's team I often glance over Shade and KK that's how good Genos squad is.
When I look at this UConn team i sometimes forget we also have two potential AAs in AK and #1 out there. That's how good we are
This team is legit

If we can tap into Wu Tang for this seasons mojo this team will be unstoppable

Hurley berates the players when they don't play with determination and energy. It's what Hurley expects from his players. The fans on this board don't but they will call it out when they see a lack of determination and energy. The players are paid extemely well for their efforts. It's not a weakness in character from the coach or the fans. Nobody is trying to hurt the players, team, and coaches. Fans aren't belittling, ridiculing, and marginalizing the players. None of what people post here is meant as payback.

This is a strange post.
Timing is strange most certainly. But I wanted a few people to consider something and the best time to do it imo is when people are happy as opposed to angry. The thing I could have done better was to start a new thread and not do it in this one. I didn't think many people would read it as opposed to writing here and I believe my position merits consideration.

Yes Hurley berates his players under certain situations. It's a shame that many of us need a negative stimulus to optimally perform but it is a reality. I don't like it but I understand it and support him when he does it as opposed to when fans do it for several reasons.

Hurley understands his players in ways no fan can.

Hurley knows when to apply it, with whom to apply it, and can individualize how he applies it that fans can not do. I'm sure there are times when he misjudges a situation and regrets it. But if he misjudges it he has the opportunity to meet with the players and work through it. Fans cannot do this.

It's my opinion Hurley has multiple reasons why he berates players. The major reason I support this behavior from him is because he really wants the best for his players in addition to the best from them. He considers the players as well as his job, his desire to win and his responsibility to put out a good "product".

When I read some of the negativity that posters put in this forum I often observe a poster's egocentric entitlement. When it is not fed there is an intent to hurt. It is purely selfish.

Now I am not a purist on behavior. There are situations where someone is going to feel good at the expense of someone else. When Hurley called that timeout in the second half he was justified. It was unimportant in this game but important for the remainder of the season. That didn't stop me from observing the opposing coach when the cameras panned on him and feeling bad for him. Because I felt he cares about his players the same way Hurley feels about "our" players. Because in spite of the understanding why Hurley was doing what he did that coach had to feel that Hurley was piling on his players. I also felt it for his players. The upshot is that the timeout had severe negative consequences for many individuals. That's a shame but sports are about winners and losers and there are times it can't be helped.

So what is my reason for writing this. Currently there aren't a lot of posts that have the intent to hurt our players, team and coaches. But this forum has a history of it.

When we're angry, hurt or upset it's healthy to express it. But it is better to express it in a manner that doesn't have negative consequences. Especially negative consequences towards something we support. That's shooting ourselves in the foot.

When any forum has an abundance of negative posts that are directed at our players, team or coaches it is counter productive. We are mistaken if we believe what we express here does not get back to the players or coaches. They don't have to come here to learn it. People will let them know even if it is meant in kindness. Most people do not have the personality to let this type of negativity impact them. So if our team or players are already doing something poorly what we write in a deriding manner is unlikely to help things we want to see improve. Just the opposite. It will most likely makes things worse.

The Boneyard has the reputation of being the best place to discuss UConn sports. It is well deserved imo. We have many posters that contribute a lot of detailed information to satisfy our passion(s). Many of our conversations are interesting and entertaining. I enjoy coming here. But that doesn't mean we can't improve this place. I don't want censorship. I just hope someone reads this and decides maybe there is a better way to express something that might do more to support our team when they are struggling and still get the point across that improvement is needed.

To be honest I get upset by those individuals who can't change not because they are ridiculous and flawed. But because I want to see our team win. Anything that is done that impacts that from happening, whether it's constant fouling or turnovers or bad passes or failure to box out or inability to rebound or stepping out of bounds I would prefer having corrected. It also includes the way we express things in this forum. Now if people want to express things in a deriding manner against say Duke or Calipari or the Canadian Team I might have some higher moral trepidations. But it is quickly over ridden by my base animal survival instincts. Go for it. As an aside because of this RuffRuff should be considered for a hanging when the time comes for such consideration.

A fans responsibility is to attend games if possible. To publicly cheer the team on no matter what. To arrive early and to stay as close to the end of the game as possible. To not boo the team ever. UConn fans struggle with this. SEC and BIG fans don't. It is one of the major reasons if not the major reason they have an economic advantage over other conferences.

Luke just looking like "uhhh"

So, missing your starting center matters? Interesting. Wonder what missing your 5star forward means.
Probably nothin', right ? Yeah, probably nothin'. And I know Furphy is just a freshman, but he adds spice to the mix as well.

As above, better defense overall but still too many fouls. Hopefully that's a point of emphasise in practice and the next tune up game.
Indeed. And I didn't see the game, but if you look at the box score, SJU is not great on offense, and will try and get their points at the FT line. They're losing to Alabama but shot 40 free throws. Needless to say, we'll need to be far more disciplined against them. They shot 5-15 from three, so it will be interesting to see if they pull a couple games out of their a s s like they did against us at MSG last year

They kicked our arses last season.

1st half - great intensity and defense vs a team that was too nervous to make some easy buckets. Only 3 turnovers in the first half.

2nd half - lost some intensity. Some helter skelter ball and too many early turnovers before the starters went out. Got to have 40 minutes of intensity vs top teams, not 20.

Great to have Reed back - obviously he makes us so much better on offense and defense.

Seriously deep team - even after taking out the starters, they continued to extend the lead until the 3rd team came on and then we basically held serve.

I can't remember the last time we had a 60 point win - I'm sure someone here has that stat.

One more tune up game and then things get real.

I'm liking what we have.
They said central CT in 1996. 114-64

To expand on this. I think our depth is overrated, it's solid but I don't think we're really beating teams with it. This starting 5/top 6 reminds me of '24. They're not as good as '24, best college team I've ever seen but similar in makeup and it's what's going to beat teams. Veteran backcourt- Silas is most likely going to be more like first year Tristen instead of all-American Tristen but he will get better as season goes along. Solo is a veteran flamethrower like Cam, he doesn't have the overall game Cam had but he's one of the best shooting guards in the country and likely going to be 1st team all Big East. Star one and done freshmen at small forwards in Braylon and Castle, different games but both huge impact players. AK should be a better AK. Two dominant centers who do it very differently and a change of pace point guard off the bench in Malachi and Diarra.

Hurley is the one coaching them and he's forgotten more basketball than I'll ever know and he's mentioned '23 but I see the makeup and the reliance on our top 6 being more like '24.
Especially considering Cam Spencer looks like he might be a legit NBA player. Remains to be seen what Karaban ends up doing in the league, but no doubt that team was LOADED

But man, Reed looks ready for some kind of season, i won’t say it yet, but I'm thinking it.
If he can play every game like he did against PC late last year, it's doable. I want it for him so much. He is easily my favorite player on this team. Such a crazy combo of size, strength, and agility.

I’m still trying not to take too much away from games against very obviously super out matched opponents and an extremely small sample. But some early thoughts subject to change…

But man, Reed looks ready for some kind of season, i won’t say it yet, but I'm thinking it.

At least Stew and Ross look like players now, not sure they’re starting caliber yet, but they look like playable depth on a good team. Maybe next year the starting breakout for either or both can happen?

Wish Furphy was healthy for this game, woulda been perfect to get extended run.

The Demary/Smith PG duo could be the separator from the other top seeds, don’t think anyone else has PG play at this level from the starter and backup.
Yeah, it was great to see them on the floor together a couple times. A Calhoun era throwback

Whew, that's a lot. Admit I only read a third of it. I support it because that is authentic Dan Hurley behavior. Just like I did when Calhoun was doing it. Without it, neither of them are the championship coaches they are. It's that simple

Yeah but do you think we have a chance to make the tournament?

I think TRjr has as good a chance to be an AA as the 2you mentioned
I agree. We have 3. I can't remember a time when we had 3 possible AA's. They'd never do it. But it could easily be any of them.

Watching St Johns and comparing them to UConn it is men vs boys at this point in time. St Johns is physical, big and strong as is Bama.
Yes, UConn romped and squashed their opponent but it wasn't Bama, yet it was fun to watch Bear be Bear.
