UMass Lowell Post Game Thread

That was @Nameless. And here's his crow to eat

You sure are testy, eh? I was coming right here to own the post myself... Even though I never said "this team isn't capable of going on 10-0 runs." I said we didn't go on one on Monday, and I questioned why. Here's the post:

"I may be off here, but I don't think we had one 10-0 run last night. I know we had at least one 9-0 run, but don't think we ever hit 10 points in a row without UNH scoring. I know we were without 2 starters but it did make me pause a bit. Why weren't we able to dominate this team? A lack of effort after playing much higher quality opponents in our exhibitions? A lack of a "killer mentality" in this squad? I honestly don't know, but I wasn't overly happy with what I saw last night."

For the record, I wasn't panicking on Monday like some were I was just disappointed in the performance. Even with the injuries it just seemed flat. Not tonight though, great rebound performance and I'm happy with what I saw.

1st half - great intensity and defense vs a team that was too nervous to make some easy buckets. Only 3 turnovers in the first half.

2nd half - lost some intensity. Some helter skelter ball and too many early turnovers before the starters went out. Got to have 40 minutes of intensity vs top teams, not 20.

Great to have Reed back - obviously he makes us so much better on offense and defense.

As above, better defense overall but still too many fouls. Hopefully that's a point of emphasise in practice and the next tune up game.

Seriously deep team - even after taking out the starters, they continued to extend the lead until the 3rd team came on and then we basically held serve.

I can't remember the last time we had a 60 point win - I'm sure someone here has that stat.

One more tune up game and then things get real.

I'm liking what we have.
Can’t really expect to have the same intensity when you’re up 47 at half on an inferior team.

Imagine being at work (like I was) and getting score updates like these on your phone.

That's why Hurley called an early timeout in the second half and cussed out the team - You have to keep the intensity no matter the opponent. You have to learn 40 minutes no matter who you are playing. Taking your foot off the gas when up 47 is the same as taking your foot off the gas when you're up 12 against a dangerous team.

So much talk about our depth (it's solid) but it's going to be hard to find a top 6 as good as ours once healthy.
To expand on this. I think our depth is overrated, it's solid but I don't think we're really beating teams with it. This starting 5/top 6 reminds me of '24. They're not as good as '24, best college team I've ever seen but similar in makeup and it's what's going to beat teams. Veteran backcourt- Silas is most likely going to be more like first year Tristen instead of all-American Tristen but he will get better as season goes along. Solo is a veteran flamethrower like Cam, he doesn't have the overall game Cam had but he's one of the best shooting guards in the country and likely going to be 1st team all Big East. Star one and done freshmen at small forwards in Braylon and Castle, different games but both huge impact players. AK should be a better AK. Two dominant centers who do it very differently and a change of pace point guard off the bench in Malachi and Diarra.

Hurley is the one coaching them and he's forgotten more basketball than I'll ever know and he's mentioned '23 but I see the makeup and the reliance on our top 6 being more like '24.

I was at both games this week. Besides the obvious of having Reed back the 2 opponents were different. UNH came out aggressive and didn't shrink. UML looked scared from the get go. Their guard couldn't hit a shot and that trickled down to the rest of the team during the first half. They were shook and it showed. UCONN played much better than Monday and their opponent played much worse. Perfect storm for the best half in recent memory. Did the 23 or 24 team score 100 at all? I remember them hitting high 90s but don't recall triple digits off the top of my head. Overall, phenomenal display by the Huskies. They were firing on all cylinders and the opponents wanted no part of it. Fantastic bounce back after Monday. From the time I heard (barley as the quality was awful) Hurley's quotes on the post game Monday on the way home from the UNH game, I had a feeling tonight would be different. UCONN played a fantastic game, can't wait for Monday for a follow up against Columbia.

You're 6th guy being Smith? Or Reibe?

Posted this in the chat, but from a student who knows the players, apparently Hurley posted the score from the UNH game on every urinal in the facility.

I really want Jayden and Jaylin to emerge. I worry about our athleticism and wing size but I just think there's going to be a major drop off going to them compared to our starters. I think our starters + Malchi are going to be really damn good and efficient, any one of those guys can get 18 points in a game.

As for '23

We don't have any starter who is anything like Jackson in '23. He was an athletic freak who could push the fastbreak, run point, chase people down for insane blocks but he really had no scoring ability and would get dared to shoot by McDermott. There's nothing like Clingan in '23 coming off the bench for this team and there's no flamethrower coming off the bench like Joey C in '23.

Yes we can take note of the opponent but this was in Hartford. This was not a good night for the anti Hartford crowd btw.
